Bizarre goings on at work

Since yesterday afternoon I have not been able to get to the SXOC site at work :( All other web sites seem fine. I can access the site from home. No one else at work can access SXOC either (I asked a few mates to try).

Now, I would ask our IT dept but saying:

"I can no longer log on to the website I spend all day reading when I can't be arsed to do any work"

does not seem the best career move ;)

Can anyone offer any suggestions, as before long I may actually have to resort to doing some work

BTW I have tried clicking on links from other sites, cutting nad pasting the address, trying links I know used to work etc. I can also log onto other forums without problems so it's not a blanket ban on forums.

Depends on what error messages you get when trying to access the site

it could be that if you access the site too much it's 'promoted' on your company list of 'most accessed sites' they check it out, see it's not used for business purposes and then block the site

this is provided of course if your company uses a proxy

Thanks for replying :)

Computer just thinks about it for ages then times me out, saying it couldn't contact the host something or other (server?).

Doesn't make a lot of sense to me but is bleedin annoying.

Never heard of anyone having this problem before at work so would be surprised if it had been blocked for that reason  as we are supposed to be allowed internet access for personal use at lunch time etc.

Just shows how useful this site is a destresser at work (I don't really spend all day on here, just 10-15 mins every couple of hours) without access I have had a crap day!! :(

Any other bright ideas or am I going to have to buy a new car ;)

hmm maybe that someones messed about with the proxy server

it sounds like it's contacting the site but the proxy timeouts are set too low so it's not retrieving the data in time before the proxy reports to your pc that it's timed out waiting for a response

you could try a trace route to www.sxoc.com but not sure if this'll work via a proxy (doesn't for me at work)

other than that it may be your companies ISP may have had router issues preventing access to some sites (sxoc being one of them)

Thanks Rob :)

It takes about 30-40 seconds for the time out message to appear which has always been long enough before. Have never had a problem logging on from work before either  so maybe it is a recent problem that has developed. Our IT system is constantly crashing/grinding to a hault

No idea what a trace route or proxy server is BTW. We have a firewall for dodgy sites but assume that's a completely different issue? I don't get a firewall message which is what I guess would happen if SXOC had been banned from our system.

Oh,well, if it doesn't fix itself by end of next week I'll probably pluck up the courage and question our IT dept about it. Easier than getting a new car - or a new job! :D

Looks like you lot will have a few days peace and quiet without me and my thicko questions :o ;) :p :D

It's working again now :) :) :)

2 and a half hours non-stop work I've had to do though this morning - what ever next!!? Plus had to work all day yesterday - must be time for a pay rise ;) :D

Bloody unreliable IT dept  but at least I know the site's not been blocked :)
