View Full Version : mods with tescos
OK i've got a stock 93 S13 and am insured with tesco's. What will happen if I phone up and ask about modding my car i.e. Adding a Mongoose cos my stock one is dyeing.
Has anyone had any knowlage of this? WIll they tell me to bugger off? Or should i wait untill October and move to another comp when my renewal is up.
Im paying around £750 - 800 (unsure cos I've moved and had it ajusted) ATM for fully comp. Im 25/6ish 5 years NCB.
Ta.
What a coincidence!!!
Ive just got of the phone to them after asking the very same question. I said I wanted to replace my exhaust with a stainless one because it would last longer. They asked me for a name and I said Mongoose, as thats the first one that came to mind. All they kept asking about was is it a performance improvement. To which I admitted I don't know, I just wont one that lasts longer.
I asked if they had a list of names of ones to avoid but they said just ask the supplier if it increases performance.
They said it wouldnt effect my policy if it was a like for like replacement with no performance improvement.
So find some supplier to sell them with the clear statement that they don't increase performance and your sorted I guess.

My renewal with tescos is £565 and Greenlight offered £630 with declared intent to put stainless steel exhaust on.
I'm with tesco and have declared my mods. They wanted to know whether the mods increased the power output and how much. I told them an overall figure given all mods rather than every single item.
There is a limit to the number of allowed mods (6 I think) but the categories are broad so they group things together eg. alloys, window tints, uprated springs fall into appearance but they don't up the power so no actual premium increase, however since the value of replacing them would be high, I declared a cost of replacement which does increase the premium.
I declared all my mods because in the end, I want to make sure that they replace modded items instread of fobbing you off with standard bits.
Overall I think it added another £250 to premium.
Well I gave tesco's a phone to see what they said and again they only seems interested in the % incress in BHP. I gessed at 6% for a K&N + Mongoose (no idea if this is any where near the mark) and he qoute me an extra £35 for the last 2 months of my plocy which is bugger all compared with what I was expecting!
He also gessed at around an extra £200 ish for a full uear which again seems to be afordable. What have I been waiting for...
Im gona mod me car :D Im gona mod me car :D

How much !!! Sounds like a lot of dosh for a new exhaust and K&N.
How could they prove you wrong if you told them it made no performance increase or 1% ? I doubt they would RR before and after :D :D :D
It seems silly for them to take the customers word for it
despite my favourable comments on tesco, I've got my renewal through now...
I was expecting around £900 comp, cos when I changed to the 200 halfway through and declared all mods, it only increased by £220 so accounting for a full year, should increase by around £450...but no, its £1300  and an excess of £800
absolutely nothing has happened to my circumstances...same house, no claims, no extra mods (tints didn't increase premium).
and get this, I'm 29, max no claims, private driveway and CAT 1 alarm (although they don't care about the alarm). Live in quiet cul-de-sac in hampshire.
so now I'm going to ring around and try and find a better deal.
Will post results if anyone shows interest.

It's always good for general info if people post what deals they manage to find.

So is the insurance lower if you fit a mod to dcerease power by 6% ? :D
There is hope yak...do not panic yet.
I have tried two recommended previously and already they are much better.
Herts Insurance Consultants
£946 fully comp plus NCD protection and legal cover.
Can be done in installments but only up to 5 months. Replaces like for like and get this, they ask whether you have magazine subscriptions because it shows you are actually interested in motors ;)
Greenlight Insurance
£775 fully comp plus NCD protection and legal cover.
Can be installments up to 4 months. Does not replace exactly like for like but they consider all mods to the car and the value of replacement. Quizzed them further and basically what they mean is eg. if you have a car 'worth' (book price) £3000 and you put £20,000 of mods, they will not pay you £23,000 if it got stolen because basically you can never recoup the cost of mods. They consider how much your car would be valued at to sell and offer you an amount ... in this case probably not much more than a few grand on top.
Things like stolen alloys, they know would be worth more than standard then they are willing to pay an additional value of replacement or if you can prove the cost of the originals.
In accident repairs they will consider the cost of replacement for a modded part and allow you to replace with an equivalent.
It looks like Greenlight for me, but I'll scrutinise the small print to make sure that I'm happy with the conditions.
Okay, a bit more info...
There's a statement which goes along the lines of:
The value declared of your vehicle is the maximum amount payable on a total loss claim.
Therefore, make sure that the value you declare (sensibly), you are happy with. They do look at the market value, but also consider the mods so in the end, market value may be worth less but the mods may increase their offer.
This is if your car is declared a total loss.
As above, they will consider the cost of replacement mods for repairs.
Anyways, I'm happy with £775.
