Yay,

Got an email bounced back to me today from Cambridge University, telling me that our SMTP server was an Open Relay and was on the MAPS blackhole list.:D

Doh  stupid me forgot to lock the relay back down after reconfiguring it 2 weeks ago.

Checked the logs and 27,000 spams totalling 14,000,000 (I kid you not, 14 million) messages in 2 weeks :D

Locked down and back off the list.

Basically the MAPS blacklist is a list of servers that allow spammers to use them for unsolicited commercial email. ISPs and companies use it to block these servers from sending emails to them.

Other blacklists were ORBS and Dorkslayer etc

Me neither mate :o

SMTP
MAPS
spam

Most keen to hear what a 'spam' is, other than a description for us people who don't know what you're on about? ;) :D

SMTP Simple Mail Transport Protocol, the way email is sent.
MAPS Mail Abuse Prevention System, A body that maintains a blacklist of servers etc that are open to relay messages.
Relaying is where a server can be used (legit or not) to forward emails.
Basically, the server was open for anyone to send a ficticious email, from a ficticious address from a non local IP address (not one of the company PCs) to 14 million poor bastids.

IE you could use it to pretend you are Tony Blair and email the Taliban saying that you want their babys etc. :)
Oh the endless fun possibilities, usually just used to advertise porn etc.

Spam mail is the term for junk mail such as unsolicited adverts for porn etc.
And it's a dodgy meat stuff only fit for catching fish with. :)
