Basically me mum ran it out of petrol.

Put more petrol in and it ran ok, then died a day later.

What its doing is, sits on idle no probs, upto around 200rpm, no probs, anything over that, it slutters and dies.

Any ideas?

Yeah sounds like cak in the injectors get some engine flush wait till you've got 1/4 tank and chuck the lot in and drive
In my experiance Forte is the best about £11.50 a tub but one should do it

and if that doesn't work try replacing the fuel filter

If its a "K" plate, is it a single point injection jobbie with a carb?

Like Jezz says, could be crap in the filter / carb thats been sucked up from the bottom of the tank.

Sorry guys, should have posted more info but was in a rush earlier.

My thoughts were as urs, so yesterday i took off the fuel filter and drained it out (it was new a month ago) and blew down all the pipes.
Took off the air filter and had a look at what was happening, as stuy says, its a single point carb type thing so i got a load of redex and shoved it down there hoping to clear out and crap in the jets (worked every time with the micra's and bluebird's) it got a bit better when i filled the fuel filter with rexed and ran it, but it still wont go above 2250rpm.
The throttle opens up ok but starts pouting in fuel as normal with a carb, kindof over the top of the throttle, but its doing it in drips rather than a jet as with the micra carbs, also most of the fuel seems to be getting chucked back out of the carb.

My thoughts are of a fuel blockage obviously, but i cant really seem to see where.
Also if ur working the accelerator from inside the engine bay, and u let the throttle off, u get hit in the face with alot of petrol and smoke:rolleyes:  it aint nice:o

Cheeky barsteward! no!

Mr Dstretch was correct, well just about.

The cat had fell apart and was choking the exhaust.
Took it off, sook all the loose stuff out, stabbed the rest with a screwdriver till it fell apart then re-fitted, now running sweet as a rover can.
Will see what happens at MOT time.....

Mr jibs, u were almost there with the kettle............ :D :p
