View Full Version : Advice/Information Please
Hi all,
Im going to be moving to the emerald isle within the next 6mths and was wondering what insurance, servicing and mechanical work is like cost wise in Ireland. Im looking to move to Cork City early in the new year and am not sure whether to sell the car before I come across or keep it. I've looked into car tax and that seems very expensive at around 539euro to tax a 2000cc engined car for 12mths. Also I would like to keep my private british plate as it sets the car off a treat but I've been told Irish Insurance companies will only insure cars with Irish plates, is this true??
Are there any other members in the Cork area??
thanks for any info and advice lads
Richard
Not Sure How This Works Down South But Up North, English Plates Are Fine, But Insurance Permiums Are Very High.
don't think theres anyone here much to the south of dublin, might be wrong tho.
i think you'll have to change the plates, i'd heard that about insurance in the south aswell.
what has you moving a way down there, not much goes on in cork AFAIK?
on the good side, petrol is cheap
lets hope not, bl00dy southerners, LOLOLOLOL
only joking
try driftworks.com, loads from souther there that will be able to help with that side of things

We'll Hopefully to start a new life, new job and new house. I haven't even been to Ireland yet , but Im over tomorrow for a wedding so I'll get my fisrt taste of a proper pint of the Blackstuff, although I prefer a pint on Magners :D
I've heared nobody thinks there's any life south of Dublin and the roads are terrible. I found some info on the net and it's seems to be quite alot of red tape involved with brining a car in from another country. Not to mention the hassle of brining my dogs over with me. I've got to get them these pet passport thingys which seems a load of bollax really.
If I decide to keep the car and bring it over maybe I'll come to a meet someday, but I know Dublins a 4hr drive from Cork  so it won't be a regular thing
thanks for the info lads and Ireland here we come!!!

Try Driftworks, there are a good few members on there from Waterford and Cork
One thing i'd advise most is start stocking up on octane booster, they've recently discontinued Super unleaded in the south so all we have now is 95 unleaded

Dave - How expensive is insurance in The Republic Of Ireland, and are there many insurers that would cover a modded s14a with about 350bhp? Im paying about £800 fully comp with all mods declared and agreed like for like part replacement in this country.
cheers

Insurance is notoriously expensive, there aren't many companies that do high powered standard stuff so competition is crap therefore prices stay high.
TBH I don't know how much a modded and declared S14a would cost as mine is (ahem) still standard and I pay €1600 comp(£1000?). I'm 29 with a full NCB btw
Most places will not cover a modified car and those that do will likely make you pay dearly for it.
I'd ring some places now if i were you so you dont get a fright! :whip:
give quinn direct a ring mate 0845 777 0345
they are meant to be good for performance cars, not sure about mods tho
...you'll obviously need to know the address of your new house :)
Try elephant.co.uk,I'm 25 live in Belfast. on my first policy therefore no no-claims and i'm payin £1089.00 fully comp.

don't think they do ROI tho
Thanks for the info lads, I thought it wouldn't be cheap after finding out how much road tax is   Just got back from Cork yesterday really enjoyed myself. I noticed in the Shell Petrol stations out there that they sell something called V-Power petrol, is that the same as Optimax in the UK?

V-Power is ghey, just regular 95 ron with additives, not the same as UK V-power. There is only 95 ron is southern Ireland I believe

Dublin is one of the most expensive places to get insurance so you should get it a bit cheaper then me if your going to Cork. I'm paying just under €1,200 for insurance and I'm 26 full licence with 3 years no claims.
As regards bringing your car over have a read through this link.
Link: Importing a vehicle into Ireland (http://www.oasis.gov.ie/moving_country/moving_to_ireland/importing_car_into_ireland.html)
I bought my 200sx in the UK from 200sxkidder from this site and then imported it back home. I had to pay VRT, which worked out as €710. But if you've owned your car in your own country for the last six months you won't have to pay this (all the info is in the above link) so you only have to worry about tax and insurance.
For insurance here's a couple of links where you can get online quotes. I'm using Quinn Direct at the moment.
Link: Quinn Direct (http://www.quinn-direct.com/)
Link: Online.ie Car Section (http://www.online.ie/services/cars/)
Link: Mijag Anti-Insurance website (http://mijag.com/) To vent your rage at insurance prices. :)
sorry for the huge post hope it helps.

More Info.
Tax is €539 a year :( (Although it's over €1000 for a three litre car  )

V-Power is rubbish and they don't sell Optimax here. Although I just use the standard stuff, but I'm running the car standard.
Just checked there and it would cost me €100 less to get insuance if I lived in Cork. :indiff:
Another good thing about Cork is you right beside the Watergrasshill track where two rounds of the Irish D1 are held. Next one is Sept. 11th Last round of the year.
EDIT: WRONG DATE D1 ON SEPTEMBER 18th
Fitz1979 - Thanx very much for that info. I'd already found that site and there's loads of info about moving to Ireland on it.
With regards to insurance Im going to try and get quotes for a standard s14a and one for a 350bhp s14a and see if I can afford to bring it over. Im 28 with 9yrs no claims so hopefully it wil be under 1000 euro, if not I better hope a i find a well paid job.

It's Murphy's you'll be drinkin down here man! Much nicer than guinness.
Be prepared for a shock when it comes to some of the roads around cork(excuse the pun). I just fitted coilovers and now know just how bad some of the roads are.
Try hibernian insurance or even the AA. NOT CHEAP THOUGH IM AFRAID.
Cork is a cracking place to live, I moved over here from Edinburgh four years ago.
Why are you moving over? Oh hang on let me guess, the girlfried is from Cork
Give me a shout when your over if you still have the car, I'd love to see a 350bhp.
P.S BUBLIN-CORK at night 2hrs ;)

Hi mate,
My apologies for not seing your post on the 14a dials group buy sooner...
Would you stil like me to remove you from the list, or would you like some sexy dials to look at over in the emerald isle :D
Let me know what you want me to do, I have it sitting here either way :)
Jay
Purplepower - Sorry about that just emptied my pm box :D If you have the dials and they are ready to be sent out, I'll have them and probably give them away with the car if I have to sell her. If they are going to be a while I'll pull out if that's ok.
Ade - Na, still love you guys just had a tit full of where I live and met a wonderful Irish gal :smitten: , plus I can earn more money over there   :D
Fitz1979 - :annoyed: :annoyed: :annoyed: I was looking forward to seeing that and I booked my flights over. Not to worry more time with the missus :D :D
Scotcat200 - I drove from Cork to Limerick on Friday and the roads are only what I can describe as total shite  the road signs and markings are slightly comical aswell :D I saw a damson s14a with big wheels on it travelling towards Cork between Mallow and Cork was it you??? Looked nice. Im running coilovers on mine but luckily it won't be used as a daily drive so I wont feck my back up that quickly :D Went out on the lash in Cork on Saturday night and it was a good laugh. Everyones so friendly and can talk the hind legs off a donkey :D

Hey dude, yeh that was more than likely me, was the car manky? If so it was definately me. I live just outside cork and work in Mallow (carry Out offlicence) if you need some cheap drink ;) . Luckily the road there isn't too bad, just don't go Cork Killarney, Cork Youghal, etc.
Don't talk about Corkonians and their love of the chat, wait till you meet a gang of farmers in the club and try to understand what the hell they're saying, especially if they also can't understand what the fcuk your battering on about, you just end up drinking instead of chatting.
Did you have any joy getting quotes for the insurance?
Dave
Did you have any joy getting quotes for the insurance? I called Quin Direct as they insure cars in the ROI, NI and the UK. My insurance is up in October so I asked if they could insure me in the UK and just change my address to Cork when I move and they said it shouldn't be a problem. They quoted my £750 fully comprehensive with protected no claims. I asked about mods and all the fella said was has the engine size been increased or has the fuel type been changed :wack: . I said about wheels, exhaust and electronic gismos and he said that that didn't matter :D . When I do change my address the premium will go up slightly but he said by not more than £200 so it's not to bad and the bloke from Quinns was very helpful
Yeh, the car I saw was pretty dirty on the side but couldn't see that much as the g/f is a female Micheal Shumacher  :D and most things are a blur.

  now what was that number again? :D
I live in Mitchelstown, about 40 miles from COrk. No 200sx though, well yet anyway. You should haed to he D1 at the weekend if you're over. Its great there.

same story with me about the mods. i was listing them and he interupted me to say "nothing to worry about then" :D

got a quote from quinn today. £608 TPFT or £895 fully comp! thats unbelievable, flux wanted to charge me £1100 TPFT or £2500 fully comp! That sounds a reasonable quote, just hope it's around the same price down south as it's supposed to be a little more expensive. If it's rediculous I'll keep the car fro a year then sell in over there. How much do s14a 200's go for in Southern Ireland, I've been told I can get good money for it over there???
The thing with bringing in your car is that you already own it and you can re register it for nothing.
2 identical cars 1 in Ireland, 1 in UK. The Irish one will be more expensive because first day it was more expensive. a car that would go for £3000 in the UK would go for €6000 in Ireland even though its value should be €4500. We had to pay VRT so if you can bring in your car and not pay that when you go to sell it you're going to make a good bit of money on it. You'll be up the VRT already or if you want to sell it fast skip the VRT and you're still on to a good thing. BTW what specs are on your car? If you're selling it next year I might just buy it off you. S14a should be my next car.
I've owned the car for 5yrs so VRT is not going to be an issue unless I sell it within the first year of importing it into Ireland, so 've been told. The cars is a 1998 touring model. It's nearly at "Stage 3" spec, just got Nismo 555's to fit and source a reasonably priced Z32AFM and get it mapped. It will probably me mapped to around 320-330bhp as I haven't got a metal HG and I won't have money to fit one before I bring it over, the turbo Garrett GT28RS can produce a good 350bhp. It's Running 18's, coilovers, Greddy Profec B, Apexi SAFC II, 315mm Big Brake Conversion, F&R Struct Braces etc. Only down point about importing it to Ireland is that Im going to lose my personal plate which sets the car off, but I may keep it on retention, just incase things don't work out overthere.
What kind of money would you be looking next year? I'm interested now but I wouldn't be able to insure it till next year, so I don't want to get your hopes up for selling it just yet. Any good pics of it?
If I sold it now I'd probably want about 9000-10000 euro for it, without the number plate that's worth between 2000-3000 euro alone. It owes me over 22,000 euro alll in all with the money I spent on mods. It all depends on what they go for in Ireland Im not going to be stupid and ask silly money for it when I know im not going to get it.
I've got some pics I'll post up tomorrow. If I remembered to pay my membership renewal you could look at my spec on here :D
Hehe. They're going for around €7000-€8000 here at the moment for a standard one. There's a few asking more but they're still for sale 3 months later. As you can imagine being Ireland I wouldn't be interested ni the plate as I couldn't use it. Well I'd keep a copy of the actual physical plate but no rights to it.
quinn won't touch me until im 25 :S
i know mate i just turned 25 in the summer, been trying to get quotes on every car i've had in the last 4 years :wack:
@wookie-
thing i've noticed about ROI is that modified cars go for crazy money. A quick look through the autotrader proves this to me every week
civics, focus's etc fetch ridiculous money- almost as if the owners just count up all their receipts and add it onto the value of the standard car :wack:
if this continues it'd be worth advertising it for at least 10k euro if you come to sell it. you never know what might happen, plus it may help to reduce depreciation on mine :wack:
He's right the do get advertised for stupid money but they also stay advertised for months and eventually go for a lot less. But anyway if the price isn't too high I'll still take it for a drive.... :)
thing i've noticed about ROI is that modified cars go for crazy money. A quick look through the autotrader proves this to me every weekI was speaking the the GF about it last night and she reckons I could ask around 15K euro for it and i would have no problem selling as the youngsters would go mad for it overthere. Think it's a little optomistic but it is a very nice looking and sounding car and it does stand out so who knows :)
yea thats it mate. a cars only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. if its something special (which yours is) then most likely someone will be prepared to pay over the odds for it- especially with the drift scene taking off in ireland
You could try and best of luck to you.
I know cars are well over priced in the ROI (Rip Off Ireland ;) :D). I was in a Mitsubishi dealers in cork on the weekend and was looking at an Evo VIII and they wanted I think 54k or 57K euro for it. In the UK you can get one brand new straight from a dealer for around 34K euro (£24k) so where's the extra 20k+ euro going, not in to the roads that's for sure. I think you can be cheeky and ask good money for a car overthere as everything seems to be priced highly. For example it's cheaper to buy a pint of Budwiser which is imported than it is to buy a pint of Bulmers which is Irish Cider produced in Ireland, what's the logic behind that. The only plus point is that wages are a lot higher than the UK. I know that if someones not willing to pay the asking price for the car then they are not really aware what has been done to it and probably won't look after it. I would only sell to a real car enthusiast TBH as I know they would value and appriciate the work that has been put into the car not like some boy racer who want's to cruise about town and would probably spin it into a wall with in 24hrs!
Ya everything is over priced here which I'm sure you'll get used to, the only good thing for you will be the cost of fuel.
