View Full Version : Trackday
After speaking to Tim (Pointblank) at Japfest we agreed we need to do another trackday.
Whos up for it?
I'm going to PM Bigtone, pointblank, richie and bren with a link to this thread so we can arrange something.
I spose the first things to decide would be:
Whos up for it? All welcome :)
When are people free? There are some track evenings which are good fun, but obviously not that long. The others are usually during the week - would it be a problem for people to get a day off work?
Where would we like to go? I can recommend Combe, Donnington, Silverstone as these are fairly close to all except Bren.
What do we think?
I'd be up for getting a day off work or doing an evening event.
Post here if you're interested :)
Im interested. Combes a long way for us but we will go anyway (within reason).
Donnington would be fine for us but if youve mediocre brakes then youll screw them.
Id also prefer a full day session and not evening.
A week day or weekend is ok for us but we are more likely to be tied up on a weekend, we have things booked until Spetember. :)
I've never done one. ever. and car is standard except for exhaust and gauges, but I fancy popping my trackday cherrry, so I's be up for one if the price is right. I'm guessing i'd need to get me a helmet though?
I would love to... trying to put in place plans for a 2nd car, so my miss's will let us out on track :ghey:
What sort of prices would the adv day cost?
You know i'm there, a dry one would be nice.
I like Goodwood cos its fast, but im not fussed within reason.
I'd like to come but I have 2 reservations
since it will be my first outing I would like somewhere with plenty of run off space to minimise damage (and as close to Dewsbury as possible in case I need towing home ;))
I would prefer somewhere close to the middle of the country, castle combe and other southern tracks will be too far really since it will take 3.5 hours each way.
would be interested but have no funds at the mo. so would depend on my finances at the time of booking how much would be a ballpark estimate? £100/150?
Donnington is central. :)
If we are going to one of the big boy tracks then youre looking at the best part of £200.
It's going to be around the £160-200 mark.
Donnington is fine with me :)
Its a shame theres not many airfield days anymore - they were great if you're just starting out. Nothing to hit for miles.
Most decent circuits have gravel traps but theres always going to be a few corners where you could get into trouble.
Donnington then  Its one of the closest tracks to us, itll make a change from travelling to Combe, Silverstone, Snetterton etc  :D
I tell you where is superb, Cadwell Park. Excellent track. Not as fast as most but superb non the less with very twisty sections, steep hills etc. Its a really cool track. Bit out of the way though :(
Donny isnt a bad price judging by this ,, http://www.donington-park.co.uk/trakzone/
Im telling you now, you do NOT want to book directly with Donnington. Not unless you want to go out with full race Ferarris, Porches etc. We will all get blown into the weeds continuosly and if its your first time on track then you will spend all day bricking yourself and moving off line to let things past.
Not a good idea
I could be up for this...
should be able to a day off
I think a day would be better than an evening one
specially if you have a fair way to travel
I would be interested, but i'm a trackday virgin so you'll need to make a list of what I need/need to remember!
cheaper the better for me unfortunately :(

It would be ideal if we could get the track to ourselves (200's plus invited guests).I know nothing about Donnington so i dont know if they do full track hire.
Defo up for it if my car is mended by then

Trouble is, its usually too much hassle to organise something like this - unless you're volunteering.
Its a lot less of a pain to go along to an event arranged by another company.
If I can juggle work I would be up for it I've just been browsing dates before our august eurotrip as it would be nice to pop in a day before then...... donnington / oulton park / castle combe would all be cool  somewhere that doesnt screw tyres like elvington :wack:

Donnington is a brilliant track, lots of run off for novices, much much more than cadwell park
I'm sure our events organiser would be willing to look into the finer details of this. I myself suggested a track day for us a Thruxton, but you've got no chance of getting any time there due to noise regulations :(
Donnington gets my vote.
August would be a good month, or september
I've had a taste at combe and i want more!! And with luck next time all my intercooler pipes with stay on!! Should be able to do a weekday, when are we thinking ish?

Just to stop Bren moaning at me because 'my cars not ready' I am up for this
Let me the date and location and I'll be there  :)

Yes  I thought combe was excellent too ;)
Theres no way we will get 60 cars necessary to hire the venue

How about adding the FCCUK club? Just a thought. As stated its alot of work... Unless we could presude an organiser to sell us a day.
How about Donnington on Monday 12th September? £195 with bookatrack.
Jez, Tim, Tone, Richie and Bren. On track at the same time  . I’ve got to see that.
Jez, Tim, Tone, Richie and Bren. On track at the same time  . I’ve got to see that.
Thats the plan - if it happens it'll be superb! :D
I'll deffo keep my eye on this, cost and dates are the two things that will stop me...
lets have a list of track [subliminal massage]Combe[/subliminal message] and have a poll see what ones [subliminal massage]Combe[/subliminal message] everyone likes.
you could [subliminal massage]Combe[/subliminal message]also drop Lofty a PM as he has [subliminal massage]Combe[/subliminal message] sorted out Combe for the day [subliminal massage]Combe[/subliminal message] a few times now [subliminal massage]Combe[/subliminal message].
did someone say Combe.

If you want somewhere central and big run off areas how about
BEDFORD AUTODROME (http://www.clubautodrome.com/)
Some peeps went just the other week, track is supposed to be very good, and loads of grass run off so no chance of getting stuck in gravel and pulled out by the suspension arm
I'll consider coming

What about Mallory park (Leicester) a couple of mates did a Red Letter day there and said the track was quite good. Any know any details on cost
(Doesn’t seem as high flying as Donnington, Combe) might reflect in the price!!!

From the Bedford site, for novices and inexperienced like myself
"If you have never driven on a full race circuit or your skills are a little rusty after the Winter break, get down to our Novice afternoon on the famous Brands Hatch Indy circuit on Saturday 28th May. Plenty of track time, friendly instructors on hand to help you get back up to speed and all for only £99."
Sounds OK
Bedford is a good circuit, I drove a 350Z all afternoon once.
BUT
The noise limits are stupidly low...
For the record, i got kicked off Bedford autodrome for a 20m drive-by noise of 90dbs, the limit was 87.5. I have S14, and was running std downpipe, cat and nur spec WITH THE BUNG IN! I was on about 9psi too...

id be up for it depending on the date :)
i've never done a track day so i'm eager to have a go. depending on when you are thinking of going i'd love to come. just need to fix the car and find the cash - usual story  . bedford autodrome sounds good, only because its 2 minutes from my house :D
:)
Id much prefer a proper circuit than an airfield to run with Jez, Tone, Tim, Chris etc.

23-05-2005, 19:22
i guess that will be the problem with choosing a location, newbies would probably prefer an airfild cos its safer/easier and the old hands at this would prefer something more challenging.
Ive only done Elvington a few times and curborough once. I consider myself still a bit of a track newbie but i woudlnt mind doing a proper track as long as i knew it was a fully sxoc only session cos i trust you guys to not drive like c0cks :D lol
id be up for it depending on the date :)
if you go, i call shotgun :wack:

I'm definitly up for it in principle. Would it be cheaper if it were during the week? I'm thinking an evening session wouldn't be quite long enough?
I'd like to try somewhere other than combe. I'm in cambridge, so nearer the better :) Snetterton is just up the road, so I'd give that as my first choice...
I don't know a lot about the different tracks, but I prefer tight stuff than long fast corners...
Another thought - I've always wanted to goto the nurburgring...

That has potential
Just need to get my car up to scratch, time to save a few K!
If anyone wants to transform their car then dont ass about with turbos etc, just whack on some decent rubber ;)

If you "big boys" want a proper circuit then dont let me stop you - I will be going to Elvington anyway so I will break my trackday cherry soon enough
let me drive it gee :)
i would go, but the car would most likely be sideways round most of the corners :)

Jez, Tim, Tone, Richie and Bren. On track at the same time  . I’ve got to see that.
:D :D :D That's the plan.
I can do week-days or weekends and location doesn't really matter, I would however prefer a track to an air field.
Looking forward to it already. :D :D :D
p.s. Tony, your right, Combe is nice....
Ive pm'd Enigma and Mambatsu to see if theyre interested :) Ill see if Alan would be interested, his cars running now, just needs running in and bigger turbo fitting :)
Ive just phoned Chris and he sounds up for it. It would be cool to get him and his car there as its the most sorted S14 I know of :notworthy :)
the boys over at UJC are doing another track day at combe

JUST INCASE YOU CANT SEE THE THREAD...
Another trackday is in order and people have been asking if we can do another one. Some pictures of the last one are available Here
Date still to be confirmed (probably July/August), trying to see if we've got the numbers before we discuss dates but it will be on a weekday, so save your holidays from work.
We need to have around 40 people interested and then the price is around £145 each. This will be an UPFRONT payment to confirm a place.
General layout we did last time was 6 cars on track at a time for around 15-20 minutes for the morning, a little bit of a photoshoot just after lunch and then an open pit in the morning. (I believe Derek did nearly 2 hours non stop at the last one ) So loads of tracktime each.
Jez H has been to one of these day and I think he liked it
I PMd enigma too - Mambastu is holiday at the moment - should be back next week.
Jez H has been to one of these day and I think he liked it
Yup - was good :)
I'd be up for this - ideal for me, Tim and Tone - bit of a trek for bren et al though.

Oh hardy har. Bytch :p ;)
Ill do Combe if I have to. Id prefer Donnington though :)

if you dont want to drive down on the day
you can always stop at mine if you want

move shall I :wack:
You know, I really think you should. Move to just outside Combe so you can act as a boarding house for 200 guys on track days :indiff:
 :p
I have a mate with 2 spare rooms on a weekend (kids away) and floor space that owns a house 10 miles from Coombe, tis a nice way to avoid an early start :)
Hi guys,
This sounds like a good laugh, Donnington is an excellent choice with decent run off on most corners and a central location just off the M1.
Sept 12th is fine with me.
Chris.
mm Sept 12 is 2 days after my birthday... wonder if I can persuade the Mrs to pay for it ;)
You know, I really think you should. Move to just outside Combe so you can act as a boarding house for 200 guys on track days :indiff:
 :p
nah I only complain about noise levels and have it shut down
i'd be up for this. donington would suit me better location wise though combe was fun
has bruntingthorpe been suggested? aparently there is no noise limit and not many barriers for us noobs to hit :)
edit: ok it seems as there is a noise limit. :wack:
cheap though at £100 - thats august though
ok, just had a look at brunters.....looks shite. ignore me :o
ill be up for this if my car is completed, or should that be if bren doesnt break his / have mad delusions of power, too often before then ;) :p
So Monday 12th September at Donnington then?
Are you Bristol/Welsh/downsouthontheleft type people ok with that?
http://www.bookatrack.co.uk/-pB?579
If we get 20 peeps then maybe we could book a session for just us :) Might be a bytch with newbies and experienced peeps in the same session though.

most of you lot will be lots higher than that, and donnington is tough on noise

I definately think that it would work much better having seperate sessions for newbs and more experienced drivers  -i'm a newb. and certainly don't want you feckers scaring the bejesus out of me at pant soiling miles an hour:wack:
It would be nice to run all the 200s together but I think that the difference between the powerful cars with experienced drivers and novices with more standard cars will be pretty huge :(
An open pitlane event would be nice, but they seem to be few and far between.
september would be good for me
In discussion this one.... £200 + costs is quite a chunk of money for me though, wonder if i can get peeps to put towards it for my B'day ;)

If it were split into newbs / experienced then the experienced (Jez, R.Sendout etc) could possibly give pointers (maybe ride shotgun) to the others?
I'll be up for this if I can sort the gearbox and some other bits out in time, I'm a complete noob at track days though :)

I could certainly do with some tuition after Saturday
Slow in fast out is fine on paper but actually getting it right on track and clipping the apexs isn'y easy
Jolly and I were discussing this today over his engine
Alg
Suprised they didn't mention the cones in the brief to be honest.
They had it set up in the usual way:
1st cone is braking point (usually quite conservative) where you start braking
2nd is turn in point - where you get off the brake at the same time as turning into the corner - the idea here is to keep the same force acting on the front outside tyre. So you're braking hard and then slowly coming off the brake and beginning to turn so the amount of weight doesn't vary loads on that tyre.
3rd is the apex clip point - try to just miss it. From this point on you're generally coming back on the power
4th is the exit point (sometimes this isn't used, and wasn't at combe) - again, try to just miss hitting it.

lol, yeah he seemed more concerned with not craching in the wet.
I knew about the cones from other sessions I've done so that wasn't a problem, but keeping things smooth enough to get round on the right line and not over braking were my biggest problems :(
Like I said on another thread though, had a cracking time and learning all the time too

Bedford is a circuit not an airfield with cones
Anyway if there is a 87db limit you noisey boys won't pass :p so its a non starter :(
Donnington sounds good
But surely we want an ALL 200s open pit lane day -
Choose when you go out, who you go with
as an intermediate I don't fancy going out with you 500bhp lot or the noobs really :)

Was that the 150Mb all in car footage one, in the 4pm session?
Open pit would be a lot better if we can find a suitable venue :)
I'd be up for this, not done anything this year in the car  Don't care where or when, bring it on.
Im definatley up for this but I wont be able to bring the 200.... :( would I be allowed to tag along with a lesser vehicle? :)

Yup, we're up for this! :D
Karen's had ARDS tuition driving a caterham around both Donnington and Combe. I've driven Combe a few times, but not Donny.
Wherever, really. :)
Donnington does have 98db(a) days and 105db(a) days, I seem to remember - Make sure it's the latter for some of our lot.
Hmmm, ya never know - I might wangle it so Tim Harvey is giving Karen some tuition on that very day in our car. That'd be interesting, n'est ce pas?
Ideally, we prefer open pit.
I've never been on a trackday but would really like to start going on some. The only thing thats really stopped me from doing so is that I dont have an oil cooler fitted yet (promised the missus I would spend more money on the house instead of the car :wack: ).
Anyway would people advise going on track without an oil cooler or would it survive ok ? Also do you guys run with octane booster to be safe aswell or not bother ??

I'd definitely get one
My oil temp goes straight up to 200 F on the track and stays there
Never gets anywhere near that on the road. Without the cooler I'd imagine it would go way higher and very hot very thin oil starts to break down = low oil pressure & trouble
Brens kit looks good, good price. Fitting is a bit of a sod :(

Cant answer that definitively, but running with an oil cooler, my oil temp didnt pass 80 C at castle combe and I also tend to pop in some octane booster, only costs a few quid per tank
Best bet, if you are worried, just make sure you turn your boost down and limit yourself to set periods on track ;)
We ran our S14 on loads of track days without an oil cooler. But then I didnt have an oil temp gauge. Ignorance is bliss and all that :wack:
Our S13 hits 110 degrees on the road and thats with a HUGE oil cooler.
Not that that means anything to S14 owners, the cars run completely differently.
My oil temps were around 110 deg after a few laps of combe - and thats with a 19 row cooler...
Sounds like its probably worth waiting for the oil cooler and a load of gauges just to be on the safe side :(

19 row, pah, I spit on your 19 row, our S13 runs 34 row :p

You only need a cooler :)

You don't really need loads of gauges, I was only looking at mine once a lap, a lot can happen in between. I asked my Dad to look at them, and while I was reminding him what I was talking about (we went through it earlier) I'd missed the chicane and had to go through the short cut instead
Remember with a FMIC you're cutting down the airflow to the rad also :(
You could take out the grill and fit a cooling panel for a start
Brens coolers are a good price, just fit one and forget about it

Oddly I was getting 110'c too, that was with a Mocal cooler provided by Bren (think it's the 19 row can't remember now)
Ambient temps were a bit lower than last year and my temps (without a cooler) were 125'c + (and that included two slow laps to get things back to 100ish
I was going full pelt for the whole session this year
A bigger rad is definatley on the list of bits to go on.

lol, seperated into groups:
Virgins - Me, Ken
Novie - bigtone
Intermediate -
Crazy Folk - Bren etc ;)
Bren - You may want to warn S13 owners that they won't be able to fit an oil-cooler straight on if they don't have the Uk style cooler thing already or have another sandwich plate. :(
Hence I didn't manage to fit ours before our track day this Friday
Feck it - Ignorance is bliss, indeed. ;)

Alg
I use the 5w40 oil and Simon Says :D its good to 120C
If you use the 10w50 thats good to 130C I think he said
Which ever way yoiu look at it 125C is really pushing that oil to the extreme :(

That's why I got the cooler, I was using Mobil1 last year.
This year I had The Silkolene ProS 10w 50. Touch wood it's done a great job

For those that are Virgins and/or worried about going on a proper track there is also Elvington 2nd July (Sat) £99 (http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=147121)
It is a really good place to learn and the car well beond the limit. I was glad ive done a few of them so when it all got out of shape round Silverstone (a lot) I had an idea of what to do and managed to keep the car on the black stuff (just) :)
Donington is most tempting too it has to be said....

Yeah, I acidently booked it a few weeks ago :o
And of the 11 cars that are fully booked in 7 of them are 200s :D
Guess I wont bother wireing in my oil tempgage thats been in the car for the last 2 years and live in ignorant bliss :D
110s fine, thats what we run and it doesnt concern me. Even the 119 it ran with a 19 row cooler was okish.
Mocal themselves recommended a 12 row cooler when I first started looking into them!!! :annoyed: :annoyed: :annoyed:
Squizz,
Ill bear it in mind, they dont fit the non UK engines :)
Ducting makes a huge difference to cooler performance - my oil temps were around the 120-130deg mark without ducting - an ice cream tub, some extrator fan ducting and some zip ties later, oil was 10-20deg cooler :)

See, it's not just me ;)
Mine was running at 95 degrees with my Mocal. I'm running Castrol RS.
I'm up for more track action but I'll wait and poach a drop out space in case my car's in the bodyshop :)
I dont think my Funds will stretch, if they do nearer the time I'm well up for it.
Pretty Sure Spa/Nurburg roadtrip will kill this years funds completely, but worth it, Jez :whip: book Spa you fool.
FYI
I hadnt seen past 110oC on track with a 19 row cooler until JapFest, where I saw 118oC at the end of the second SXOC session.
Vids to follow.

Donington sounds good for me, except there's no way I'd pass a 98db driveby  At combe I was idling at 99 :wack:
If we can do a noisy day there I'll pull out the stops to save up for it though
Oulton would also be nice, although I don't like the idea of driving all the way there and back on the same day :smash:
(Please don't consider Combe as I want to go somewhere new ;) )
*edit
Just a thought as I don't seem to remember it having been mentioned; but what are your feelings on Brands Hatch?
I'm not totally sure of it's location, but that would make a most cool trackday - esp the full GP circuit  :D

This sounds really good. If this is gonna be in september my car should be prepped and ready by then :)
I am up for it - and the closer to cardiff the better! :p
Butuz
its your birthday butuz so you can pay for me as well :p
anyone fancy the welsh motorsport centre in pembrey?
We need to let mambatsu know when we get something decided, he cant get into the members section at the moment
I had a look round for trackday in September, mid-country and open-pitlane, sensible noise / no noise restrictions ..... nothing.
I reckon the donny one I posted up would be best: http://www.bookatrack.co.uk/-pB?579
Whos up for it? :)
Pros:
Cool circuit
Fairly central
Proper track with pits etc
Cons:
Sessions, not open pit lane
98db drive by noise limit
Stu's having some Ex noise issues, saw him yesterday and aparently he was measured at Goodwood (just for curiosity) at 115db.So he's looking to fabricate a trackday friendly system.

What's the exact criteria for a drive by sound test?
I thought I read some where that one of the uk's tracks required 89db drive by and 101db static, that's quite a difference so I would of thought that if you passed the sound test at Japfest you might be somewhere close to a 89db drive by?
Or am I talking total poo?
Cheers
Tim.
The drive by tests are dependant on the track.
At goodwood, for example, they have microphones at the exit of a few corners which measure the levels. All you got to do is lift as you go past ;)
I'd imagine its the same at other circuits.
i've done some investigation :)
for pembrey the usual car testing days are on fridays, 108bda, and you need a Nat B MSA licence
cost is £150 for the full day and £90 for half day + £20 for additional drivers, there are discounts available
I can get the track on the weekend if you want but not this season
its open from march to october
i can make enquires if necessary :)
Wtf is a Nat B MSA licence ?
Butuz
Where can you get a competition license from?
Alg
thruxton is probably the nearest for you young algie :)
its about £200 odd
