View Full Version : Thumb on windscreen stops chips??
My Aussie girlfriend says that when driving along dirt roads with pebbles being kicked up by the car in front, you should always put one thumb on the corner of the screen "as the pressure stops the glass chipping" . Sounds like BS to me but she says every aussie know this and they have a lot more dirt roads in Australia so they should know. Help me settle this argument.;)

Must be a f*****g big thumb.
lol:D :D
Surely they'd just get a rubber thumb shaped thing and put it next to the window?
Sounds a bit unlikely to me.... but I'll no doubt be proved wrong
I can just see Colin MacRae at full blast down a dirt track with his thumb on the windscreen
Dunc.
I guess the idea is for the thumb to absorb impact when a stone hits the windscreen?

Don't be stupid, of course Colin McRae doesn't drive around with his thumb on the screen...
Thats's why they have Co-drivers!
All this shouting out directions is just so he is doing something else useful to make up for the weight :)
Seriously I think somebodies g/f is laughing at them, or superstition... Seeing as a surprising amount of of the stiffness of a modern bodyshell comes from the bonded in screen, if you are driving down a dirt track it's gonna be under all sorts of pressures anyway. Can only think putting your thumb on might act as a damper to the shock... nah...
More like superstition: Person thinks that the only time get s a broken windscreen is when they didn't have their thumb on the screen, or if they did have it on and they get a break, they decide they probably weren't pressing hard enough...
FFS I can't believe I wrote a post that long about soimething so trivial... I am not bored at work, oh no I am not...

Aussies talk ****e anyway ;):D
Probably just makes you drive slower?
Yeh, when ur driving around the twisty roads, get ur passenger to pull down on the handle on the passenger A-pillar - this will give added traction to the ground with the downforece momentum.
