View Full Version : Speedo Fault
thought id start me own thread instead of hijacking others!
my s15 has a funny speedo, after about 60mph the speedo goes up in 10 mph jumps! not wavey, just jumps! strange me thinks it could be the speed pulse convertor but though id ask see if anyone else come across this!
That was what came first to mind. Maybe have a word with the importer?
 thanks nicely, ya fast becoming my best friend!
ill have a look into how much one is and see if its worth just replacing it

The S15 actually gets the speed the rear wheel ABS sensor. The signal goes to the ABS control module (about 1 foot from the ECU) and is converted into a speed signal, which is then sent to the speedometer (the speedometer then sends the speed to the ECU :wack: ).
If the sensor was buggered, the ABS would be all to pot I reckon - might be the ABS control module - if it is, tell me what they want for a new one , as I have one spare :Plug: (ok, may use it one day in a mad experiment, so it's not free :p ).
But that signal has to then be converted before it gets to the speedo, odo, etc as it will be in km/kph.
Mines got the same thing. Its caused by the black box which converts the signal from kmh to mph as you thought. I proved this by removing it from the circuit and rejoining the wires so the clocks read in kmh again. Ive got a new converter box on order so will let you know how I get on with it when it comes.
I though the signal that was sent to the clocks was a different one to most systems so a converter would not work.
C.
Different in what way? It does send a feed to the ECU as well which I dont think all of the convertors do, but I understnad it should still do the job.
i have found the convertor just behind the speedo, as i said it works fine till 50-60mph then goes a bit naff after that, the abs seems to be fine althouhg i have not tried it properly i must admit! will give it ago this weekend have it in pieces at the mo.
by the way anyone wanting a s15 cat back system in stainless made by pro one only 1 month old ? got mine booked in with a company to have development work done for their new system!
sorry forgot to say thanks guys! let me know how you get on holset1

Ah, forgot there would be another aftermarket box in the way to cause the problem

It would only have to be a dedicated converter for the S15, as the signal is of a different format to the S13 and S14 speedometers.
Maybe the feed from this box to the ECU might be a copy of what the speedo would send, but with a feature to level it off at some speed below the artificial limiter - the car goes faster than 112mph, but the ECU isn't allowed to know this and cut fuelling. Out of curiosity, how much do people pay for the converter boxes?

Ah Ok...Fingers crossed the new one solves it...
Think the speedo boxes are between £75-100, which is a bit scandalous really.
right guys took the speedo box convertor thingy out today and ran without it and was perfect so its got to be that to be the fault, new one on the way!
