OK, as most of you lot know, I'm about to set up in business, running my own integrated advertising, design and media agency.
Hence I will need to lay my hands on an Apple...

What would you lot recommend? (Sys. spec, prices, places to go etc) I know roughly what software I want and what system I want, just looking for advice from people in the know who already have all the gubbins to hand...

Thanks :)

Why does it have to be an Apple?

Because, according to some friends who do a lot of graphics work and book/mag design, they are the canis canis's twitchers

Just reckon that Apples a better suited to the domestic market than to seriously intense use. They certainly wouldn't have been suitable for my company (we design and install accounting and finance software). But to be honest I don't know enough about them and could well be talking rubbish.

If you're used to Apples, buy an Apple, personally I prefer Granny Smith's and Red Spartans, but Coxes are ok ;)

A decent PC, can and will do most if not all tasks an Apple will do and in a lot of cases will do it better.

Those friends who you spoke to, weren't Apple users were they?

They were, because under the demands of Quark etc, PCs seem to self destruct...

Hey starion, i'm in graphic design and i use a G4 ..and have done for the last couple of years. I would say that 99% of creative business's use macs. as for specs....get loads of memory, i bought 2 512mb chips from the states for about $110 each. Now you'll be able to run as many apps. simaltaneously as you could ever want! Don't know when the latest G5's are due out but you can get some good deals on year old G4 duel proccessor's at the moment.....they are ridiculously fast and 100% reliable.

I'm at the moment on my G3 400 imac.. their great machines.. take no notice to what most people say cos most of them have never even touched one. Like Jeremy said you can't knock them for reliability and for graphics most people do use them because they display colours a lot nice and run multimedia smoother

Warning that you might have still have to pay a bit for one compared to PC prices cos even the second hand hold their money really well.. you might wanna have a scan on ebay cos they have quite a few.

Oh and all Mac OS X is far more interesting than any of the new Bill Gates Sh1te!!!! :D

I use both Mac's and PC's and Macs are good at graphics (most high end 2d graphics software is written for macs first then ported over to PC) OS X is Linux and not some great original work of art and they are a pain to fix. Your best is to pic up a G4 with as much memory as possible (pricy though).

I don't think it matters where you buy them price wise, unless you're looking to save a tenner, since Apple pretty much fix the prices. Just go for the best service.

And anyone who says a PC will do as good a job on graphics needs their eyes testing.

Besides, any design company worth their salt wouldn't give a Pile of Crap a second look. You have an image to maintain after all. . . .

Apple is the industry standard in all graphic based industies, have an uncle and a cousin who both run TV/Video production companies, Planet Productions, and Spring69 incase anyone knows them, I know Jeremy200 lives about 100 yards from my uncle, and planet is in Kingston

If you include 3D graphics, then I think other companies such as HP, SGI and SUN would have something to say about this.

The old arguments of what computer is better, will never die out. Just remember that systems are designed for 2 different things.

But for price performance, a PC WILL outperform a MAC of the same price - these aren't claims, we have performed real world tests in our design dept, performing tasks in Photoshop (A Good test of performance.) The G4 Macs were slower at performing certain tasks than the 1Ghz Compaq Deskpros.

The MAC desktop is renowned for being more user friendly than the Gates piece of ****e...... but in my experience, our MACs crash more often than our PCs running NT. (Multi Processor Workstations as well as Deskpros)

OS X is not Linux. OS X is built on Darwin, which is derived from 4.4BSD.

If you want to dig around with NT/2000/XP you'll find a nice VMS like OS underneath.;)

I beg to differ.. Mac's load multimedia graphics a lot puicker.. Mr Jobs (Apple CEO) showed that a dual 800 G4 will out process a 1.7 ghz PC by somethin like 70%.. if you go on the Apple site their is an artical about the 'megahertz myth' which show that Mac processors wipe the floor with PC ones :p

I fully agree with you, the RISC PowerPC is a far better designed processor than the Intel Range

And you will find that Photoshop 6 runs faster on a Pentium 3 than a Pentium 4, because the version 6 was not optimised for the Pentium 4. Give it 2 Pentium 3 Xeon Processors and it's a different story.

An independent Test would be far more accurate, Apple would load the test in their favour.

We are currently paying around £600 for 1Ghz Compaq Deskpros. Find me a decent Mac at this price.

If you really want to see Photoshop fly, you should see it running on an Alpha :)

Don't take this the wrong way, I am a fan of the MAC, there are somethings they do far better than the PC, but I fear that in the end, that the MAC will not survive.

Er, Photoshop 6 was plauged to hell. That's why Photoshop 7 is out so soon.

Changed my mind:D

Just had a walk through PC World and spotted a G4 Cube. :) Now why can't PC manufacturers make systems that look as good as this?

Nope, I have a JBL Dolby Digital / DTS System connected to my PC.

And I reckon my PCs sound will eat a MACs sound system :D

No really, I'm not...... :)

A long time a go in a Studio Far Far Away, they used to Put Apple Macs on the desks to control Midi Musical Instruments and for Digital Hard Disk Recording.

But then Some Chaps started to take the PC seriously for Music and the story goes on from there. The PC is now the Premier System for Digital Audio.;):p

And before any one mentions Creative Labs...... My Sound Card of Choice is not a Soundblaster or Compatible.... :D

Neither can I  Just spoken to a M8 at a studio and asked them what they use.

His answer....

PCs for Sequencing and Recording (Apparently they offer more compatibility with customers systems.) Using Logic / Cubase / Sonar

BUT this really impressed me... They use a MAC based PRO Tools HD and 3 PC based PRO Tools MIX24 for digital Audio production. Apparently these systems start from 10 Grand upwards:eek: Makes my Bontempi seem a bit lacking :D

I use both a Apple MAc G4 and a PC AMD Athlon.

I have to say that both are as good as each other, and the mad thing is that the Apple MAc crashes and F~cks more often than our PC's!!! And you try getting support & techniacl assistance for a MAc! Damn expensive and very hard to come by.

I use Quark 5, Illustrator 9, Adobe Photoshop 6, Pagemaker 6.0,6.5 & Indesign of both machines and they are pretty much the same performance wise when opening pictures etc, layout docs, designing adverts.

Save yourself some money and use a PC until you can afford to get a MAc if you really think you need one! (By the way Adobe is starting to move more towards the PC market as there are more potential customers/users with PC's! Insider info!)

If you really want a MAC go to www.jigsaw24.com quite good prices! ;)
