View Full Version : Autoglym Drift Championship 8th May @ Snetterton
As last year there will be club stands with half price entry to spectate.
Just had a mail from OPT asking if we want to participate. Seeing as its only 10 days away Ive said yes and that we'll have 20 tickets.
These tickets are FOC (the Free Of Charge for those Spethial people out there) but Steve Carter will need a helper monkey to hand them out on the day and organise the club stand because he has very short arms and doesnt stand out in a crowd
I'll probably be popping along with my 6 year old in tow - would be nice to have tickets, but I'll only take them if there's some left over. Having my son along probably means I'll only be there for an hour or two, and it would be unfair to take tickets away from people that would be there for the day.
I will be taking a tip down there on the 8th to catch some drifting action . Is it possible to have to have 2 tickets please ? :Plug:

Do we have instructions once on site where to go?
Never been to Snetterton before.

I will go. Just to confirm, I the driver get in for free, and the passengers pay £10 each. That gets me on the stand and spectate etc :)

If your name is within the first 20 then you should get a ticket, just make yourself known to George (GmasterT) on the day. You'll recognise him, hes the size of a housing estate.:p
I would be getting there between 9 and 10 to ensure a spot I reckon.

I have already mentioned this in the Norwich Meet thread, but might as well say it here as well. The local Subaru club is meeting up at Thickthorn Services (A11/A47 junction) ready to drive down to Snetterton and have asked if any of us would like to convoy down with them. They plan to meet at 9.00am and leave by 9.15am, so be at snetterton by about 9.20am...well about 9.35 if we are good :D I know Mcrearout has approved so that makes 2 off us against about 30 Imprezas :wack:

05-05-2005, 19:20
Spoke to Option today. I dont think they thought this through properly.
The problem is that its £10 to get into the track which is where the stand will be so George would have to stand outside Snetterton and hand tickets out as you arrive, which isnt fair on George.
So, could you all list your real names (I'll try to sort it out through the database as well) and you'll be put on the guest list to get in for £5.
Once youre in, marshals will direct you to the stand area.

The trouble with Wild Trax is that my oil won't even have time to warm up its that close to my house. And I doubt you'll get out of 1st round that track!

Keeerazzzzy stuff :D
top day :D top drifting too - nice to think that it is going to get even better as the rounds passed (!)
damian mulvey really did pull some incredible drifts, but but but but yeager and carter also had some big balls on the first corner - 100mph+ drifting with billows of smoke :notworthy:
As usual, I'd offer to off all the judges - phatty did some unbelievable second corner entries which no other competitor matched in execution let alone attempted - but because it was done using the handbreak the judges didn't look upon it too kindly :( whine whine bleet bleet.
the twin drift was actualy very exciting - yocal[looked like they do on those videos from japan!]/yocal , though I'd rather see better matches in terms of horsepower in future - you had the bigpower option boys leaving their opponents in the smoke trail in many cases :(
good to see lots of sxocers though :D met hachiroku, walshy, dudely (liquidsmoke) and many many more. Even someone I didn't know directly through the sxoc :D
and finaly to round it off..
Set commentator to bollox and aim at all the people.

so you are having a go at me for being critical when i am the judge????? surely thats the point of judging you fool. I will stand by all of the decisions made on the day and if i need to i will explain why we came to those decisions. Phil understands now why after a brief chat and some explaining on the DW forum, most are happy with what we did.....
I am all up for constuctive criticism. In fact i welcome them, but your comment above won't help matters at all.
I thought you line into the chicane was definitely the most entertaining Phil ;)
Top day, twin drift rocked and the standard of the cars was excellent. Obviously a very diffcult little section to rock on, but as the day wore on, the drifts for the top corner were being initiated earlier and earlier
Yeager still hates tyres as well, Carter  for getting the car at least 6 inches off the ground on one occasion, :notworthy to Damien and Non for the best drift battle the UK has ever seen (not that they can read this :wack: ) and cant wait for Wild Trax :D
Oh, and the old man was trying out his new 18x zoom camera with sequential shutter thingy, so Ive got loads of top snaps including Yeager destroying more tyres, Steve losing it (but not flying tho :( and Phils last battle and both of the final ones at 0.3 sec intervals - very

To be fair, Ben was tyring his best to keep the crowd entertained but you miserable people didn't wanna play ball. I was stood in the judging booth shouting "one more time" and the Irish guys were all about it, but not anybody else really.

No, not that I know of. Just some muppet who thought he knew it all  Felt like kicking him in the bollocks and making a run for it :p
There were a notable number of people being quite vocally critical. It didn't help the mood that the commentator refered to one run as "exciting as watching paint dry", its not like he'd just scored in the high 60's and jumped out to fill the rest of us in on how its done.
The sound system in the Ryder truck was not bad, they were playing some good choons, and the stands and amusements were quite good it was a shame that they were so far from the viewing point, but thats more to do with the size of Snetterton and the relatively small scale of the event, Drifting has got big shoes to fill but I reckon its got the capability to fill them.
Rob
I think the whole event was excellent. I have no one to criticise :p everyone was awesome! Really much better than I expected.
The only dissapointing run of the day was the one that scored a zero

Exactly how it should be.
A zero score at Clubman level could be put down to a bad day or inexperience... At Pro it's a little less easy to forgive :)
It was also good that nobody did any major damage to their cars on the track (that I saw). :)

this is what i posted on Driftworks, all the details are there....
The handbrake issue will probably upset many, It is an effective way to get the car to slow down and set the car up for going into the second corner. However it is not desireable to initiate a turn using the handbrake. It is idealy used for adjusting line and angle mid drift rather than to start it. When turning into a corner the rear wheels should not be locked solid and if they should lock, they should be locked for the shortest time possible. This is top level stuff if you can do this.
Many people had to brake very hard in order to get the speed down for the second corner, as some of you may know this is frowned upon in top level drifting in japan. the judges there expect people to come in and just not let off the pedal, the speed is scrubed off by going into drift earlier and holding a steady angle before the drift and then using the brake and handbrake to slow you down. phil was doing this to a certain extent but with a little too much handbrake, if he could do something similar but with less andbrake and more footbrake, he would be getting close to the ideal.
Please remember that these criteria are working towards an ideal. I wanted to work on a points scheme that would relate to the absolute best in the world. and have been delibratly demanding in the criteria and points scoring. What i am trying to achieve is to establish a scoring system which a 50 in this championship would score a 50 in D1gp. or a 97 in autoglym would also score a 97 in D1GP. Therefore a score in the 90's and high 80's is at top level D1 standards. I truly think the best of today were up there....

Accepted - It's just a shame phil's handling of that 2nd corner really looked better than anyone elses. :smash:
Midgers got the single highest score of the day at 90. The next closest being Brett with an 88 and then Phatty with an 84 :)
I think he was entering the first corner in a drift the earliest and was defo one of the fastest of the day. :notworthy
And he came third in case people dont know :D

Highlight of the day for me... Twn drifting aside ;) ... Was coming second in the show and Shine :D
If I'd known it was a competition, I'd have cleaned the car! :wack:

Ah good work jackal
Cheers for the thanks guys, no probs! :)
The drifting was very very good, a very high level indeed, looking more and more like the jap level of things, but with a uk twist (big handbrakes should be allowed!) :D
Ben is getting better, he just needs a bit more practise, maybe a second commentator/sidekick may help as I feel he is running out of things to say!
At this point I shall nominate myself to help :D

i personally think we should run a systme like at D1gp were the judges get a mic as well and can comment on how they are scoring as it's going on. however that would mean that you have to listern to my jibberings all day.
apparently the mic wasn't switched off all the times we thought it was. did anybody hear me and ben joking about when he said "simon thorpe in the rear"?

I think simon (or somone) was 'coming up his rear' iirc!!! :D
Maybe a good idea to have a judge 'helping' but I was just thinking that a bit of 'commentery banter' maybe better if you have two 'commentry' type people. You do on the tv... :)

yes it's true.... all these comments are much appreciated btw and would welcome any suggestions for improvment.
Are you going to be judging all the rounds? I want to know exactly what youll be looking for at each venue :)

i will be until they fire me for being vrap. i'm going to confirm with kiki exactly which part of the next track they will be scoring on and i will go to the track as it's only 5 minutes away from me and will let everyone know exactly what we'll be looking for.
look out for the anouncementin the drifting section.
I want to make it more clear for the people who don't really understand drift what they should be looking out for and that will be a particular emphasis of mine over the next month.

Apologies to you guys for not getting my car to Snet, AntS13 and I slogged our guts out all weekend to get my tubby fitted in time, but to no avail. Got it running by midday Sunday but had a few teething problems within the first few miles and had to turn back :(
Ants car developed a coolant leak from the turbo as well, so we ended up driving to Snet in my missus's Ibiza. Arrived there about 2pm, so got to see the best part of the day
Well done to all those who competed, I've got an airfield to practice on and I still can't hold a drift :wack:
Raz :)
P.S. Told the guy on the gate we were supposed to be on the SXOC stand and he said something about getting the second half of a ticket from a guy at the stand and taking it back to the gate before 3pm to get our £5 back, so we said sod that, we're already late, not missing anymore drifting

i'm thinking it's going to be a bit like the three sisters kart circuit up here near wigan, not big, but enough for a technical drift challenge :) 2nd gear type stuff.

I got loads of pics on my phone (1.3mpixel) but due to the distance from the track the cars are a bit far away. I'll download them tonight and see how good they are - I got about 30 vids too but they aren't very good :(

Sorry to hijack the thread but is the welded diff an upgrade to the VLSD or is it just a bodge for non LSD car's? Also I have heard stories about tyre wear. How bad is it? I am swapping my VLSD for a welded one soon. Thanks for any advice in advance

it's a cheap alternative to a proper 2 way diff, essentially it's a 3 way diff because it's locked all the time and it makes driving round corners a bit more difficult as the car wants to understeer unless you drive it sideways :D . tyre wear increases so it's not good for a daily driver.
I only drive my 200sx on average once a week or for drifting. Will that be a good cheap mod for me then?
Thanks

you up for doing it then doc? I have already approached them about practice and they said no :(
i would however like to get a car on track so that we can show the width of a track through the pictures.
Yeah, I dont see why not - I might be heading over to Bobs at the weekend anyway. :)
Do you want to check its alright for us to do it then, and we'll have a go late Sat morning or something?? I can blag my old mans camera and meet you there or something :)

yeh, it beats paying circa £600+ for the proper thing while you're just practising, just get a good mig welder to do a decent job. ideally on a an s13 open diff rather than the viscous unit - can be done on both though.
Cool! Thanks  I have already arranged for an open diff. Just need to find a welder now :)
BTW Yeager, Midgers and SteveCarter. Just been watching ur vids on my camcorder. :notworthy
