bren

Im going to the Spa Francochamps track in Belgium this year. Its supposed to be an absolutely fantastic track, everyone who goes just raves on about how good it is. Heres a lap inside a Prelude. Dont think 'pah, Prelude', you should see this guy drive!

http://www.bookatrack.co.uk/-PFrichyv235319322?richyv&2353&19322&video/x-ms-wmv

The track day is £225. Details here:

http://www.bookatrack.co.uk/-pV?34

Theyre on the 24th and 25th of August. Anyone interested?

Im really interested Bren, I love that track,

Its just doubts on wether the 13 will get there and back in one peice

Intrested :D
Have to work out the travel costs, but August is 3 months after May (JapFest) so it falls within my "1 trackday every 2 months" budget, the extra month helping with the extra cost.

I'll think about it.

I went in September 2003 and it was an absolute blast, there is absolutely nothing like flying through Au Rouge at 120mph, it is scary as fcuk  Go go go :) I'm thinking I might but don't know for sure yet, I don't want to commit to too many events this year :)

I'll say yes.

Then something will happen and I'll have to pull out, but I'll provisionally go for it.
Like everytime I try to go to Santa Pod!

Right, I really want to do this  that looks amazing.... the trip will be spot on too, 200sx european road trip anyone :D

We are supposed to be going away on holiday over that period but I'm hoping with a little grovelling, crawling and psychological warfare I can persuade the wife otherwise

As soon as she gets home from work, I am going to have a word ;)

Jez, you know it makes sense :p ;)

Its 250 miles from Folkstone to Spa.
Its 160 miles from Rotterdam.
I think Bren said there was a package for £95 ferry/camping fees you can take, I'm unsure of what ferry journey that was. Its a cheap for me to travel more miles and a longer drive but I dont mind paying for the extra ferry to drive less.

Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th October 2004 - we're back to the awsome Spa-Francorchamps F1 circuit in Belgium for 2 days open pit lane track time. Caterham Superlights are available on both days and we can even transport your car and collect you from the airport.
Noise Limits: Unrestricted

She wasnt exactly keen, but I've convinced the wife it will be fun...... So I'm going

Bren, Kev, I notice your names arent down yet, when are you booking? I'll book as soon as I know you're definitely going  looks like we need to book quickly, there are already a lot of cars booked.

Whats that package, ferry, camping etc? Who's booking what journey wise because it will obviously be cool to travel together ;)

Still in planning stages, but I think this is doable for me, wait till end of the month and I'll be ready to book. I might leave a couple of days afterwards for a coupel of nights somewhere, maybe Amsterdam if the Rotterdam ferry was chose for Bren and Jez's non-touring machines :whip:

It doesnt say how many places are left, do you have any idea if its nearly full or not??? Kev, if you are only waiting till you get paid before booking i would be happy to book it for you and you pay me later ;)

I'm up for this :)

I'm getting quotes of ~£70 for Dover-Calais overnight the Friday before, and ~£112 for Ijmuiden (near the 'Dam) to Newcastle (inc an economy cabin) the Saturday afterwards.

I might make a week of it :)

This map (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=600000&Y=6400000&width=500&height=300&gride=&gridn=&srec=0&coordsys=mercator&db=&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&zm=0&scale=4000000&up.x=193&up.y=4) shows the distances involved. Sounds cool. We're up for a week as well ;) , we are both off the weeks surrounding the trip :D

SM
27-04-2005, 20:53
I thought Wednesday, give Jez, if he is fully convinced, time to get back for the wedding on the 27th.

TomM
27-04-2005, 20:54
Yeah hum. I'll book as long as other people will :wack:

Who else has booked?

And Wednesday or Thursday? I'd vote for Wednesday, so we could spend a few days pootling back through Belgium/France, wine and cheese-tasting :)

SteA
27-04-2005, 21:31
Right, I've booked and paid for the Wednesday  get booking :p

Have you seen that they offer to take 4 wheels and tyres (there and back) and fit them for you for only £30  it comes up as an option when you pay... I will ring them tomorrow to double check its ok for spa, but I think I will take them up on that :)

TomM
27-04-2005, 21:33
Right. I've booked. :D

The good news: you can pay a 50% deposit, and then the balance up to 14 days beforehand. So Kev has no excuse now :)

The bad news: according to the secretary ( ;) ) I'm at a bloody wedding in Ireland the weekend before. So it will be a hell of a rush to get to a ferry-port for Sunday night, or maybe Monday morning. So I might miss out on some SXOC 'Dam-related fun :( :( :( :(

SM
27-04-2005, 21:39
Still £113, I cant even afford the other £49 for Elvington I've booked until 21st next month. And for some reason I've just bought some 555's, ok £163 but FFS why did I get them this month :wack: :smash:
An its more affording the tyres/ferry/trip, I'll get busy with the calculator and decide by the weekend.

bren
28-04-2005, 11:04
Ive booked SPA :)

Our planned quick trip to SPA seems to have extended into a blast round Europe though. Not sure if I want to do so many miles in our S13, its a dedicated track car, its not a cross European tourer

Kev,

I can sort some work if you want it :) Easy stuff, just web work :)

What days are you planning on going to the Nurburgring?
Well Monday 21st its Open 13.00 to 19:00
19/20th is open all weekend, but a bike weekend
Open in the evening Tuesday

Can I suggest we have the weekend in Amsterdam (those who want to)
Then Monday at the Ring, with Tuesday Eve as a backup in case the Fog is still following Bren ;)
Wednesday is the trackday at Spa
Thursday homeward.

I might look at Thursday - Thursday Ferries and have Thurs/Fri/Sat night in 'Dam. Sunday off to the ring, Tuesday to travel to Spa.

How does that fit with peoples plans ?

SteA
28-04-2005, 12:10
Its coming together

Looking at the area around and on the way to Spa looks pretty nice to say the least... nice food, nice wine.... but shame about the dodgy company :wack:

We just need to start agreeing dates/timetable etc, but if we are paying for the ferry, travelling etc it would be rude not to make a holiday of it ;) I'm getting excited :D

Bren, make sure your new man whore behaves :whip:

I'm going to try and fit in my ittinery with the plans that are made, I dont think we're going to be up for the 'Dam and I did enough camping a few years ago so its B&Bs for me and Mrs Phat Bob. So once I know what your doing I'll book my activities to fit in.

I'm really temped - but as Bren said, I don't want to have to drive around Europe in my car - it hurts.

bren
28-04-2005, 12:31
Jez has a wedding the weekend after SPA I believe.

Im not interested in three days in Amsterdam. The place bores me to be frank. One night would be enough for me. Maybe we could meet you guys there Sat night :)

If the rings open Monday all day then Id like to get to where we are staying Sunday evening so we have a full day on the Monday :)

Then on from the Nurburgring Tuesday to stay at SPA Tuesday night ready for the track day Wednesday.

bren
28-04-2005, 12:32
You drive straight past SPA to get to the Ring so its not like the two venues are out of the way of each other. I think it was 1100 miles round trip for us but itll be less this time as we are going Hull - Rotterdam (sp.).

Can we sort a list of who is free when:

Bren + Ann free whenever

I got a wedding on the 27th so have to be back home on the 26th latest.

I'd be up for meeting on the Sunday to get somewhere near the ring for Monday, do the ring, then drive somewhere near Spa on Tues ready for trackday on Weds, then kip over Weds night and come home Thursday.

I'll look for camping near 'ring for Sunday night, and ask who wants it booking. If anybody wants to find somewhere and book thats fine by me. Sunday/monday night, also tues/wed night near Spa.

I dont mind being in Amsterdam on my own for the weekend, thurs-thursday ferries are quite cheap and I know of an excelelnt turn-up and camp place in 'Dam
I think if we say the "core" of the trip is Sunday night meet at 'ring, then Spa, and the days either side people can sight-see if they want while they are already there.

Yep, Bren is 100% right, looking at the list I'd give you a week at most to book and pay 50% of the cost of the trackday.

Bren/Jez
Its not that many miles on the rotterdam side for your bouncy, noisy S13's.
Even if you go via Amsterdam its only 480miles, split this into 4 journeys Rotter-Dam, Dam-Ring, ring-Spa, Spa-rott and You should be fine. Its less than going to Silverstone and back in a day, but split over a week.

I've been informed Super is about 1.05€ but Bren should be able to confirm this.

HMMM. I think ive hit a snag. This was going to be my first proper track day and track days require that you wear a helemt? Right? bren
28-04-2005, 17:22

On a serious light I also have problems with my head hitting the roof with a helmet on (Im not as tall as you but our seats sit higher than the originals) and Ive fitted a steering wheel extender to bring the wheels closer to me so when I lay the seat down I can reach it better :)

mrwookie
28-04-2005, 18:01
Question for you bren. I dont actually own my own helmet for track days so where is the best place to get one from?? Do you guys stock them??

bren

We can do helmets, you just need ot measure the circumference of your head (round your forehead) and let me know if you want open or full face and I can get you a list of options :)

Now that we've booked ....

I'm planning on taking a full spare set of wheels with Semi-Slicks for the trackdays (R888's or whatever, probably leave that to Bren with a budget), as well as wet-track suitable tyres to drive there (ie new Good Year F1's) 2 full sets of brake pads  just in case ;) I know I'll need 1 set between 'ring and Spa even if they are only 20% worn after 6-10 laps of the 'ring. I'm going to try and not do anymore than that, somebody stop me if it looks like I'll do 40  Feel free to be violent :wack: 5L oil, and normal trackday tools as well as the weeks worth of camping stuff.

Is that inline with everyone else, or daft ?

I doubt everyone will be out at the same time, and I'm sure to save driving laps we will swap around and passenger each other, leaving at least a car to put stuff in. We all wont need to take all the tools, we'll make a list and not bring too many of everything.

2/3 jacks and 2/3 sockets sets between us, nobody need take both.
2/3 air compressors & .
1 lot of brake fluid and bleeder
1 Bag of Zip ties
2 rolls of tape
1 Set of S14 Turbo gaskets :wack:
1 Set of S13 Big Ends :whip:
1 Wideband
Euro Recovery for all of us ....

Why do we need 3 socket sets? And 3 jacks and 3 compressors?

Ill bring:

Windy gun
Socket set
Spanner set
Spare pads etc in case anyone needs them.
Good idea. You will defo need to take spare pads as my last trip proved. I had new front and rear discs and pads changed a week before I went to Spa, I drove to the 'Dam, then to Spa and by 2:45pm my rear brake pads were down to nothing and had worn a grove in the discs. I had to drive the whole journey home with my rear brakes squeaking :wack:
This is soooooo tempting.
I might do it the other way around, go to the 'Dam and the ring but miss Spa. :D
But that won't work, I'll end up pissed off at missing Spa. Damn you all!! :wack:

I'll have a look at the distances involved, but I might not come to the 'Ring with all of you. After all, it will be pushing it to get to Holland by Monday, given the wedding on Saturday, so I'll miss out on the 'Dam anyway.

I might spend Monday-Wednesday pootling down through Holland & Belgium with the missus, camping, and then meet all of you at Spa. I'll aim to be self-sufficient with tools and parts. I'll probably then spend Thursday-Saturday pootling back through France to Calais.

Kev: I'm not sure you'll make much of a saving by going Thursday-Thursday rather than weekend-weekend - the ferries seem quite reasonably priced anyway.

Cheap Ferries found ;)
£48 return, whatever date I tried , some times seem more (middle of day) £68.
Dover - Boulogne, then 300mile round trip Nurburg/Spa about £30 in gas for me ;) Bit bad for Amsterdam though :(

Now lookign unlikely, I think Bridget will come out with me for the "holiday" bit then catch a cheap flight home before the trackdays. Tried to persude her to have the full week but she is scared I think :wack: and a long weekend is easy with Flexi-Time.
Its not like she doesnt like motorsport, lucky b1tch is currently in Barca for a week and catching all 3 days of the F1 next weekend. She is also hoping to be at at least 1 other F1 race this year and went to Hockenhiem last year as well as a few BTCC races. In fact she saw more live motorsport than me last year.

Hi guys,
This is going to be a no no for me unforunatley.

The car is about to go pop if i keep hurtling round fast race tracks, i can feel it in me bones. It took a bit of a hammering at rockingham on monday, and fractured the water feed to the turbo, requiring aa assistance to get home. Gearbox is just about fecked and i've got the GT circuit at Bedford next saturday then japfest the weekend after.
I don't really want to get stranded at the ring. (not that its a bad place to get stranded thou :D )

So i think i'll give it a miss.

Once again, video will be posted when i get web space stuff etc etc... :annoyed:

I asked on book-a-track if anybody had any recent info on local camping facilities, first hand info is much better than website info.

Camping Am Nurburgring is a huge place right next to the circuit. You can't book a pitch there but its never full except on GP weekend, where the Hermans come up 2 or 3 weeks earlier and park their caravans and then go home again.

Shower blocks are good, recently renovated and firewood can be bought on site.
There is an off road moto-x course there if you're into bikes or quads.

You'll get woken up in the morning either to the sound of testing on the F1 circuit or the German Airforce doing flybys.

Whats the plan then?
Whos found the best European breakdown cover?
To be honest I'd rather not camp, anyone up for staying in B&Bs?
Who traveling from where? I'd rather meet up with someone in the UK and get the ferry with them over to the mainland - would be dead bored on my own...

Same here. I'm not too sure on the Dam, I'm thinking just the 'Ring and Spa  I might go 'Dam if others are going but I won't go on me tod. I'm not fussed whether camping or B&Bing as I have a PHAT tent  or B&B's are cheap anyway. I must say, I camped at Spa in Sep 2003 and it was feckin freezing so that may sway me. :D I'll be travelling to Dover from Bromley, not sure on which ferry destination yet though as Calais is easier but Boulogne is cheaper, but I wouldn't mind making the journey with someone else to make it more interesting.

Cool, in which case, even if we don't go in convoy we'll more than likely cross paths. Up to you, either way.
I'm with Fluxy and that covers me on the European mainland and comes with Euro breakdown cover so I don't need any extras. RAC usually costs about £40 for a week, from memory.

You can do Dover-Boulogne for £50 on the Friday before, as me and SteA have been looking at. And maybe Rotterdam instead of Amsterdam, or maybe somewhere else for the weekend, nothing is booked so open to suggestions.

How many people are thinking of going on the Friday before? and where would you like to spend the weekend, we really should start making better plans now.

AA is costing me ~£40 for the week for the Euro cover upgrade, pretty sure fluxy's green card is free to me to.

Anyone looked at ferrys yet?

Hull Zeegrugga is overnight. The ferry is £90 return. The cheapest cabin is £190 return extra and they wont let you just book a seat, you HAVE to buy a cabin :censored:

Folkstone-Calais dont have a ferry, only the chunnel, minimum £98 return but poor crossing times, 5.30 pm outbound, 10.30am homebound.

They do better times for £118, 12.30pm out, 4pm return.

FYI
Calias - 'Ring - Spa - Calias is about 430miles
Boulogne - Ring - Spa - Boulogne is about 480miles

Ste - Brussels is right on the route, so seems the obvious place to be a Tourist on Sat. Although there are many other places close, not particually bothered what we do and where, just touristy non-car stuff.
Bonn, Maashict, Antwerpen Gent, Lille ..... loads of places.

Which Ferry do you fancy, Thursday? Friday? Morning? Day? Evening? Night? I dont really care, Just Sat, or Fri/Sat night in Brussels is good for me, leave for Nurburg Sunday morning. 25 miles each way extra to save ~£30 on the ferry boulogne/calias.

Not bothered about blasting around Spa so can look after gear whilst watching y'all having fun. I've got a tent etc, and about a weeks holiday (plus 24/8 is my 45th b'day). SteA ... Well no plans are definate, I would like a weekend in Brussels (and probably favoured option if I take Bridget), I would also like to see my Belgium mate, although he may meet me at Spa (but this isnt ideal as I wont have much time to chat, probably see him at the weekend if I was on my own). If it was me and Dave travelling then it would be hard to drag us away from Amsterdam (and my initial plan).
No offense was meant, you know I'm just unorganised and want to do everything.

Just out of interest SM, why are you getting the midnight ferry on Thursday/Friday? Am I missing something, but Spa is on Wednesday, stay at Spa Wednesday night and then come back. Surely Spa is only about 5 hours from the port so an earlier ferry would be better if we intend to get up in a leisurely manner on Thursday morning, have lunch, chill for a bit, then head home. I don't mind getting that ferry, but earlier just seems more logical?
Cheers

Cool, seems a good enough reason to me. I'm booking those ferries now.

You didnt confuse the dates did you? I almost did with my ferry being just after midnight  EDIT to add that no you didnt confuse dates, just wondered why you thought I wouldnt get home till sunday? I dont drive that slowly :wack: I'm taking the 20 past midnight ferry on friday night which means I will be home for 5 am saturday, have a lye in till 2 pm saturday then have the rest of the weekend to chill at home

Its a holiday, I dont need to rush back and the area around spa is supposed to be beautiful

I might miss Brussels Ste :( and catch up with a coupel of Belgium Friends, as I didnt realise how close to Maarstict one of them lives, and thats right next to Spa, so might drink with him at the weekend and then he might come to Spa for some passenger laps.

I've managed to book same times as you so we could probably meet and drive down together :) share some of the load?

Dave: Yeah, I can do that, its not much different if I go A1/M11/M25 than M6/M25,
Actually, is Bentham near Ingleton, and presumably High Bentham ?
Dont be to offering on the load sharing until a few of the others have warned you how many wheels I normally like to take on a trackday :wack:

Ste, yeah, your back Sat morning, most of the day in bed and then sunday to recover, I still didnt think that was not quite enough time for my lazy ass to get sorted for back to work on Monday, but wasnt going to rush for a wednesday night ferry from Spa, so its somewhere in the middle, and its also a £25 ferry, so making the ferry very very cheap at £60.

Cool :D 3 of us on those Ferries, I'll tell my mate I cant make the weekend in Maarstict, although I suppose I could still catch him Sunday .... and that he should come and meet me at Spa. I found out another mate who works in Koblenz these days (50miles from the 'ring) and commutes from London way sun/friday is hoping to grab a beer with me at nurburg campsite Sunday night, thats no problem though as we should have to be there by that time anyway.

Er .. there was something else but phone went and now I've forgotten :wack:

Amsterdam is one of my vices ... Campsite is great
I've always camped here (for the last 10 years)...

http://www.vliegenbos.com/Engels/welcome/welcome.html

Vliegenbos
Meeuwenlaan 138 (636 88 55 / fax 632 27 23).
A campsite to the north of Amsterdam not far from the River IJ, ten minutes by bus from Central Station. Vliegenbos has a bar, a restaurant and a shop and also rents cabins which sleep up to four people at €45 a night. Rental bikes are available. Vliegenbos is considered a 'youth campsite', generally a more lively/noisy site.

I like this site as it has 1 entrance with security, and no matter what time of day or night there are people walking about, and have never had anything nicked, car tampered with ect ... ect ....

Brendan,

It is with sincere pain and frustration that I am forced to write this e-mail notifying you of the cancellation of our Spa-Francorchamps track days in August. The FIA have dictated an order that the circuit carry out some maintenance works during the week of 22-26 August - in preparation for the Belgian Grand Prix. It is for this reason that our days have been cancelled - with no alternative dates available at the circuit.

Please believe me when I say that you have my sincerest apologies for any inconvenience this may cause. As i'm sure you will appreciate, this has financial ramifications for BaT and it is with this in mind that I ask you to consider leaving your funds with us, subject to one of the following incentives:-

1) Half price entry to both October days at Spa-Francorchamps (11th & 12th). The balance of your funds will be credited to your BaT account.

2) Refund to BaT account of all funds paid plus a 25% bonus.

In both instances, the BaT credit can be used against any future UK or European events.

Once again, I am truly sorry to have to send this e-mail ask that in order to confirm you have read and understood this e-mail you please click one of the following links :-

1) I understand the August events have been cancelled and would like too book the October events at half price and have the balance as BaT credit.

2) I understand the August events have been cancelled and would like to take the full amount as BaT credit with a 25% bonus.

3) I understand the August events have been cancelled and would like a full refund to my credit card.

4) I understand the August events have been cancelled but only had a provisional booking and am not due a refund or credit.

Should you require a refund to your credit card this will of course be honoured, but please be aware that it may take up to 14 days to process all of the refunds. Please also note that if you did not pay by credit card you'll need to contact us by email with your bank details.

Kind regards,

Jonny Leroux BookaTrack.com Ltd

Info on previous BAT trackdays at Spa

oct 02 - 1 day - weather was grim
sep 03 - 2 days - 1 showers, 1 sun/dry
oct 03 - 2 days - glorious sun both days (but cold!)
aug 04 - 2 days - glorious (hot hot hot!)
oct 04 - 2 days - 1 day overcast & damp, 1 day clear & dry (cold!)

Edit, just had a look around.
Theres loads of stuff on, open pitlane around that time, Oulton Park included, all £200 ish, just doesnt compare to Spa for only £225 ... even if we get back £281.25.......

Pah!! Too gutted to think about it now.
But there are loads of English tracks I wanted to do, Oulton, Anglesea, Croft, Donnington, Full Brands, Snetterton ...... there just not Spa.
Would have to change the times to make it worthwhile to go just for Nurburgring, an extra weekend earlier to get a full weekend on the track.

Spa have signed a contract with the FIA, which every Grand Prix track has to sign which says the FIA have authority over any events held at that venue. So if the FIA says Spa has to do the work, they have to do the work :( if they want to hold a Grand Prix there that is :(

Sorry guys but I'm not risking the weather in October. :( It's like the 'Ring in that it has it's own microclimate and it will defo be cold and damp with sod all grip at the very least. Worst case it might be too wet to even open the circuit. Check their previous Occtober ones, not nice weather. Have a look where Snetterton is, Ste - it's over near Norwich. It would take at least 3.5 hours (and a tank of fuel) just to get there. :( It's also run in x3 20 minute sessions - you'd be really frustrated, with ~10-12 minutes of proper driving per hour (allowing for warm-up and cooling-down time).

There's a BaT event at Croft (out past York) the weekend before, but again it's run in x3 20 minute sessions, which would be a pain in the ass.
