I fancy a nice GP sports kit this summer
Yeah, I decided what ever...... lol I was expecting to get the piss taken for that.
They are coming off in the summer for a re spray
I like the wheels. They suit the car well!
What offset etc are the wheels?
they are 17's. 8.5 inch front, 9.5 inch rear. They were from a 300zx on ebay. I'll measure them to check the offset
Ok, very roughly (on the car with a tape measure).... they are between 25-30 offset.

Like the wheel's aswell
Going to post up progress bit by bit as I do it, with pics. Ill put up 1st pics tonight, but its just a normal engine out job atm.
Very interested in a documentary of one of these, look forward to seeing the work progress
Looking forward to this make sure you take lots if photos :)

I read it, didn't give enough detail of how the engine actually goes into the car, just about what was done to it ;)
Not to say that it isn't an awesome machine :notworthy

Phil LS did a substantial write-up on the fitting. No wiring diagrams/routines on here as of yet, but it doesn't look that hard to do.
As a sad anecdote, the RB25 ECU actually has the same pinout as the CA18 one (just uses the spare pins for the extra injectors etc) :wack: . No real help, as you still have to swap and splice looms though.
After fitting the engine on the cross member along with the steering rack you lift the car up and push the whole lot in to place and lower the car down. Pass the 4 bolts that secure the cross member to the car through the chassis rails and bolt them up.

the yard looks so nice in the photos Ian, doesn't show the wind and rain that was whipping around us most of the time anyone touched the car. When do I get a go in it??
Yes it looks peaceful and sunny doesn’t it. Sometime soon Danny
Obviously we took out the old (not really that old) Ca18det.

more progress soon......
Good work so far, is that seam welding I see? :)
Dam I’m seriously thinking about doing this convention.
I take it you can’t use the s13 gearbox on the rb25

why the gaps in the seam welding? would look better with less wire feed .
The engine bay black looks good, is that compressor sprayed? and what colour?
Gaps are to reduce chances of it cracking. Its got to have some flex somewhere.
I spayed the bay with 4 coats high build primer and 3 coats gloss black. Its all done from the can, just took ages doing it, rubbing back each time.

what spec are you gping to be running that at?
going to go for full exhaust, air filter, front mount IC, SupraTT fuel pump and boost at 0.9bar for now. I have my eyes on a turbo and manifold kit from down under that with injectors and management can give 450rwhp
hoping for around 290-300 for now. I'm sure it will be much more drivable than with the old engine, low down power mmmmmmmmmmmm.
I just want to hear it start up now lol.

You did manage to find an RB25 very quickly  .
I take it that it wasn't that difficult?
lots of phone calls and emails with no luck, nearly got one shipped from the US.......... in the end yellow pages, a place called 'Hills' had a 49,000 mile gts-t with everything on it. hope to have it done in 10-14 days.
Cracking progress so far, keep up the good work!
Bay looks lovely
Cleaned up the steering rack today and mounted it on the cross member. Also made new brake lines.
The breakers messed up my order so I dont get the ecu loom, afm or ecu until tomorrow :(
should be good to start making some good progress in next couple of days.
The list of small parts I need to replace grows all the time... 2x track rod ends, cross member bolts, fuel filter, loads of hoses etc and some 60mm stainless exhaust to weld up a solid IC pipe kit.
The is quickly changing from an engine conversion to a full scale rebuild/restoration, but I love it  if you're gonna do it, do it propper
(note to self: please dont take car apart for at least 6 months after this) <<< yeah like thats gonna happen.

What are you doing about the prop shaft for your engine?
What are you doing about the prop shaft for your engine?
Exactly what I was thinking... You dont mention that coming with the bits
I have the r33 prop in my garage. When I fit the engine/box, I'm going insert the r33 prop, then measure the distance between the U joint at the front and the U joint where the s13 prop bolts to the diff.
A place in St Neots (baily morris or something like that) does this kind of the thing for kit cars alot and will charge me about £100.
One piece makes life easier I guess. £100 isnt bad either!
(Mine was £35 IIRC tho) ;)

Think that £100 is probably for a re-hashed standard prop rather than a new one-piece.
I just assumed as he's measuring all the way to the diff input shaft that he's going one piece ;)
Engine and box went in tonight, will post pics in morning...
Old power steering lines are a pig to re bend, think I'm going to get some new ones made up.
Need to phone the salvage yard tomorrow as they took the clutch slave cylinder off the box and the s13 one very much doesn't fit, also no sign of a boost controll solnoid (dont expect the s13 one to work)..... They have buggered up loads to be honest, hopefully after this 3rd try they will have sent me all the bits I need/asked for. :wack:

The S13 doesn't have a boost control solenoid. The RB25DET has two stage boost like the SR20DET which is something like 5 and 7psi which is switched by the ECU.
You can ditch it and just run the single boost level.
cheers for that info. The salvage yard cant find it so that good to know.
I'm getting it mixed up with the pressure regulator controll solenoid valve..... what does the rb do for one of those?

It doesn't have one.
I am extremely intrigued by all this and would request all you guys who have done or are doing this conversion to give me a rough idea as to what the total cost was excluding labour. Please! It will help me decide whether I can ever afford it or not.
Thanks
Good question, although I seem to remember that this has been asked many times with no real answer or people avoiding the subject!!!!!
A rough parts breakdown with average prices would be handy :)

Well, I was told I could get a rear-ended GTS-T for about £1400, so if that's correct, add onto that the propshaft alteration and the exhaust. And then add some extra headroom just in case you've forgotten something :wack:
(wait's for those who've actually done the conversion to correct this.... :wack: )

not far off john
sounds like a bargain to get a whole smacked gts-t for £1400 tho.
I paid 1750 for all i need from Hills salvage. The only problem is its now their 4th try at sending everythig I need.
Buying a whole car would defo be much better.
Im trying to do the whole lot for £2000
Engine went in really easy. We lifted the car with the crain and got it really high on axle stands just forwards of the middle of the car (so it doesnt tip forwards :wack: )
Then used the crain to get the engine/box as close to the bay as possible, a trolly jack under the box helped a lot with this bit. The car can be move very easy with the crain with the hand brake off, this only took 2 minutes.
Once it was lined up, the crain was used to lift the engine into place whilst the jack was used to raise the box. With the crossmember bolted in place, the gear stick sit nicely in the original hole, just about an inch forward. I hope that 1st, 3rd and 5th dont make me select radio 2......

Have now started on wiring, pics in next couple of days.
Conversion costs for me so far
Complete car with engine rebuilt by Simon Norris (10,000mile earlier) 1900
Greddy front facing plenum 600
Huge intercooler (front mount) 500
3" stainless exhaust (1 silencer) 260
Skyline brakes moded for S13 hubs with braided lines 80
Z300 master cyl 80
Special whiteline front anti role bar 260
AFM 40
Propshaft 120
(Due to emigration) PTS sorting out the wiring and a few odds and ends?
Then there will be a bit extra for a custom rad 57mm core, cooling fans etc. Wheels and spoiler etc. to make it look nice. Probably £4000 - 5000 in total.
Thanks a lot for that info  I think £2000 is very do-able  I shall be keeping an eye out for RB engines ;) (When I have the money)

is fitting the RB26DETT much harder than this?
or is it equall??
A bit harder in that you need to fit the RB25 gearbox and sump to the 26
right i noticed you have made up new brake lines for your conversion, is this 100% necessary?? i assume this is for clearance maybe? or where yours worn out and needed replacing??
thanks  this info would be a great help
You dont need to, but it creates slightly more space :). On my conversion the plenum used to rub on the brake lines - until we 'persuaded' them away from the plenum :) ;)
one question gtsx, did u remove the dash before removing the wiring loom?
gear box mount moddilfied with angle iron. Bolt holes needed to be 50mm forwards.
s13 shifter fitted in rb25 box, gave a shorter throw and sat lower.
will post more informatio but now im too busy grinning. Just drove it :D :D :D :D yay!!!!!
First thing tomorrow i need to double check everything and put bumper on.
RB sounds amazing!!!! im grinning so much i nearly swallowed my nose.
cant wait till tomorrow, once its all checked i'll start to feed in the power.......

Edit, edit, edit...
The RB25 gearbox is R30A and the shifter isn't compatible with the W71C gearbox from the S13/S14/R32....
i know it changes gear...... for how long is still to be found out......
Actual_Ben_Taylor
15-07-2005, 23:33
I would change it back, the gearboxes are very different and you don't want to go damaging it
the skyling shifter sit very deep into the box. The s13 one although not as deep is still well into the box. I'll see how it goes for the first week then re address the situation.

You obviously know far better than Nissan so off you go...
AFAIK the only short shifter you can get for the RB25 is made by Cs. These were afaik the original and best.
We looked at both and the S13 one was definitely shorter.

I'm not saying i know better, I just tried it to see what would happen and it seems to work.... havent given the car a 'hard' drive yet, maybe this will show up any problems.....
has anyone done this conversion and taken any progress pictures?
'a picture says a thousand words'
there are some pics on pages 1 and 2 of this thread. Once the engine is in its mainly the wiring thats the work. that and a bit of welding/fabrication. I'll put some more pics up in next couple of days.
sorry mate.
i meant detailed pictures...
things like the engine mounts etc?
ive seen quite a few engine swaps but people dont seem to note down the details :)
im just interested in whats exactly involved as i want to do an engine swap.
im looking at the rb, a v8, rebuilding the ca, or an sr... i know that covers everything but the rb looks an interesting engine conversion...
how hard was the loom to wire up?
you keep the r33 crossmember, fit the s13 steering rack to it and this all bolts up to the car (with engine and ox attached) as per the s13 item
The wiring was about the same difficulty as most conversions. The biggest issue we found was that the only manual on the net for the R33 is an engine service manual, thhis doesnt have circuit diagrams for the car side of the loom so I bit more thinking is required.
cool.
is there any modding of the cross member needed? or does it all bolt together nicely? :D
dont have to touch a thing. Getting the engine in is easy.

I think when I did my conversion the S13 stick was exactly the same as the rb25 stick. Can't remember for sure thonot quite, the r33 stick is slightly longer (goes into box slightly furthur) in effect the r33 stick makes a good short shift for the s13 (sneezer did it and had to reverse it because he needed the r33 stick for the RB car

Yep its called a 'solid shift' because it reduces overall travel by only 10% as opposed to the 30 to 40% of the C's.

Do you have to use a custom prop or does the S13 one fit?
You need to get a custom one made out of the front of the R33 prop and the rear of the S13 one :)

17-07-2005, 16:54
Aha :) Roughly how much does that cost peeps? Guess it has to be balanced etc.
mine was £120. the front section of the prop (fowards of the carrier) needs to be 30mm longer with the skyline yoke on the end.

Crikey, that's some pipework. Did you weld it up yourself? :)
Oh and it's worth a peek at the SXOC stand by late-morning each day at JAE, because there was certainly an unused space or two there last year :wack:
I cut the pipes and tack welded them, my mate finished the welding as he is better (mine is a bit splattery lol I have only welded a few times) I'll try the SXOC stand at JAE each morning, would be nice to get it on there for some pics etc. I think some people here dont like me much though...... no names.
just got the boost set to 0.85bar. Its farking regiculous. I thought the s13 was silly at stage 3 but this is plain mad. Its got shat loads of balls all the way through the revs. I have been changing gear 1000rpm before peak power and its still scaring the shit out of me.
yeah, they're fun. Lotsa rb25/s13 swap localy.
I'm considering one right now. Not because it would be my first choice (vg30ET sohc is), but been offered a clean complete motor/tranny/loom/ecu from a guys cancelled hot rod project for $1000. Was about to spend $600 on a turbo for my ca18 anyway, so this got me thinking.
The swap will take me ~2-3 days
Been off the road for ages as I had to finish my degree, but managed to finally get back onto it.
New parts:
Garrett GT3076r
CPC 80mmTB
CPC plenum
Tomei poncams
Tomei metal HG
Side mount Manifold
Sard 550cc injectors
High strength cam belt
Aem map sensor
Aem ecu
Aem Wideband Lamdba
Homemade 3inch IC pipes
Homemade exhaust
Catch tank
bla bla bla usual stuff that I forgot
The Ic pipes took 3 days to cut and weld but they are so smooth that I'm sure there would be no benefit from getting some bent ones, and I like to do all the work at home on my drive.
So far there have been 5012321 thing go wrong or not fit that I wasnt expecting, but most things are sorted out now and I 'hope' to have it all done in 2 weeks. that is 'HOPE'!
heres a couple of photos of how its taking shape
by the way, after market skyline plenums dont like s13 engine bays. check out the clutch master cylinder.....

had to cut it off, move the whole thing back inside the blukhead and tap it for a remote reservior.
even after doing this there is only 5-10mm gap to the plenum. Its bloody huge.
I always planned to build the power of the rb, just needed to get some cash together. The s13 trash at bruntingthorpe showed me that the engine was fine and liked a good thrashing, so I decided it was time. I've been collecting bits since then.
Its amazing how many things go wrong when ther isnt a guide to follow or at least someone with a clue of what to do....
Where'd you learn to do all this stuff if you don't mind me asking? I wouldn't have the first clue as to how to do any of what you just said :wack:
I guess that's why you have an RB and I don't :smash:
Have you heard of jumping in at the deep end.:wack:
It all began when I was 17 and had a Nova. I knew nothing about cars but I bought a cam and some twin 40's instead of a bodykit..... i got it running after a month and it was... erm... quite scary for a 17 year old really.
Nothing is that hard if you just have a go and dont give up.
It going to blow up now I said that
Nice attitude, I get stressed out too easily when things go wrong, that's why I could never just do that.
There's sharks in the deep end you know! :wack:

Art school??? :wack: :D:D:D
Looking good buddy.
For the record, my plenum used to hit the BMC lines, but on further investigation we discovered that it would have hit the ECR33 BMC/pipes aswell! :smash:
my plenum fouled the themostat housing ( the new one supplied with the plenum)! this would be exactly the same on a skyline obviously.
The high flow plenums on the Rb series are just huge. Its bigger than the one we got for the 800rwhp supra we are building (pics when done).
Art school??? :wack: :D:D:D
Not far off, I just finished a computer animation degree, thats why its taken me so long, I had to do boring things instead of play with cars....

no, its just getting a gp sports style kit.
Nice weather...... got the front bumper trial fitted tonight. Its ready to come off. Then have to prep and paint it. Side skirts are at the same stage.
Skirts are not fixed on in the pics, just resting in place to get an idea.
The pics are a bit naff as it was dark and raining and there is loads of dust from cutting/shaping the parts.

Hope to have all the body work done by the middle of next week. Really looking forward to getting the turbo kit on.
This is gonna look awesome when it's finished :)
I really like MKIV Supra's as well. Is the silver one in the background yours?
That belongs to the senior gent. shortly to get a rather tasty 1000hp lump in it.
The engine and turbo are built up next to my car, just waiting for the 200 to be out of the way.

good stuff dude - what power are you expecting from her? Im not sure what the RB25's standard bottom end will stick.
its the same turbo kit that bubble has on his r34 gtt and he made 524bhp.
The stock lump can handle 500-550 but the question is for how long.

Very nice, look forward to seeing it in action :)
Looking good mate, did you find the EP stuff a good fit or did it need a lot of trimming?
rear bumper was fine. Skirts and front needed quite a bit more trimming. All the edges that go into the wheel arches had to have a lot taken off.
It is was a expected for a 500 quid kit. I'm not really fussed about the finish as I'm more into the power/handling side of things. I only started prepping it for paint when there were some set backs with turbos and ecus etc.
I'm glad I've done this now as it did look shit before. Hopefully even with the kit, 500hp will make it a sleeper.....
Yeah, it's a nice kit and not too over the top like some of the drift kits.
I'm deciding between that front and the N+ front for mine, just can't make my mind up.
thats it, im painting my car black:D
looks awesome dude!
I just wanted to see what it looked like in daylight before I took it all off.
Next time its all on, the whole lot will be black. No more burgandy:thumbs:

500bhp is quite impressive - i thought that'd be a push with a stock RB25 (I know the rb26 can handle 650ish if tuned properly).

should have a decent center panel if you need one
you dont have a full set of rear lights I could buy do you? My pannel is gone and the lights are pretty shagged....
I have a pair of clusters I can sell, although not 100% about centre panel, depends if my new lights come with one or not.
By the way, looking good although definately need some daylight shots
Some quick lunch hour pics..... water marks on it and still needs polish and I want to bond the edges of the skirts on.
Question? - what do you think of running a strip of white tape where the original black strip went?

Hopefully these coils with an increase dwel time will give a good spark.
Just to check you've got this right, as the line above wasn't clear to me, the dwell time is decided by the ECU. The coil has certain minimum requirement of dwell time in order to produce enough spark energy for good ignition (minimum time current must flow in order to fully establish the field in the coil).
So if you've ordered coils that require a longer dwell time than your ecu produces you may be disappointed.:(
Whereas if you mean you are going to increase the dwell time in the ecu then all good:)
Whereas if you mean you are going to increase the dwell time in the ecu then all good:)
yep that one:thumbs:
not done anything just got back from download festival. need wash and sleep and more beer......
The splitfire coils are not going to arive from nengun until late next week at the earliest, so I just ordered a wasted spark system from driftworks.
I will fit this at the weekend and see how things go.
fingers crossed, I'm starting to very much loose interest.:indiff:
Just fitted the driftworks wasted spark kit which took most of the day to fit and sort out properly. Also painted up the cam covers.
Started first time was excellent, drove for a while but was far too rich, let off the power and two massive back fires and konked out. Never mind just chuffed that its running. Going to start mapping it later this week.

I was driving it earlier when it was being mapped and its really F**king loud its amusing. Pulls really hard and delivers the power really nicely. Tommorow we will be mapping further and getting closer to the 500hp mark.
how much has it cost so far?
if you was to sell how much would you be looking for it?
how much was the conversion?
well I'd already modifeid the car A LOT (coilovers m3 disk z32 brakes......)
about £12,00-15000 (after everything I have bought/sold this is what I am owed by it)
about£7000
I sold my ND engine with stage 3 bits for £1500, bought the skyline bits for £1750
then I spent:
£1200 AEM ecu
£2500 Greddy turbo kit
£300 Tomei cams
£150 tomei head gasket
£300 exhaust
£500 plenum/90mm throttle body
£400 Nismo 760cc injectors
£300 FMIC
£150 Wasted spark coils
£300 koyo rad
£150 fans
.....
.....
..... dont know, lots of stuff I forgot
I have bought and sold a lot of parts at a loss whilst getting to this spec including Garrett GT3076r, apexi power fc, wrong fit tomei cams, z32 afm (went map sensor).
Unlike the early stages of tuning (stage1, 2, 3 etc) it is a bit harder to work out what you want/need. Some parts dont work well together and it is easy to spend a lot of cash on parts the you will not use as the dont suit other parts. eg: my plenum was never going to like maf set up as un metered air would be a ball ache.
I'd like to build a stock rb25det s13 with s14/z32 brakes and coilovers. I'd run it at 10spi and it would be an awesome track car.
This car is very very over the top now. But I like it:D

I have been through all the highs and lows with NiteRyder, on this roller coaster of a build. The biggest mistake we made was using AEM for management. Given all the hassle and additional costs, hireing flat beds etc, we should have gone with Motec or PFC. AEM was far more of a head ache that the original engine swap. Now it is running well we hope to exploit the AEM to its full potential. I drove the car whilst it was being mapped to 0.7 bar, yesterday afternoon. It certainly makes up for all the months and months of frustration. At low speeds it drives very much like the stock RB, despite being cammed, having a huge plenum and very free flowing exhaust manifold and system. It responds so well to extra pressure on the throttle, it just pulls and pulls like a train right up to the rev limiter.
It is a long time since I drove the car when it was running stage three before the engine swa., but it feels very different. The little( no offence intended, it was great fun) 1.8 needed to get high in the revs before the turbo really delivered power. This often makes a car feel more powerful than it is in reality. The RB is probably delivering much more power at 0.7bar but the push in the back is there form the moment you bury the throttle right to the end of the rpm range, no sudden surge just constant acceleration. I cant wait to see what it feels like when we have mapped it around 1.4/1.5 bar. I can't wait to see the super car drivers faces when a G plate leaves them chocking in a cloud of tire smoke.
If any one is considering going this route to create an awesome street machine, remember the old saying, "You get what you pay for". Quality is always going to cost more, but don't expect big power from e bay knock off parts. The Greddy manifold is a work of art and it's design well thought out for the Skyline shell, which is we believe narrower across the turrets than the S13.
Fair play she is sounding sweet . . . mine shouldn't be far off being finished. Like to think i'll have it on the road in a few weeks.

some good and bad news today.
We got it up to 1.1 bar (going for 1.4 tomorrow)
Its absolutely mental. I went over a bump and it span up in 4th at xxx mph.....
But............... it sudernly dropped off and will only make 0.7 bar. I spent the last 3 hours checking and removing all IC pipes, even took the turbo off to check we had not melted the exhaust wheel.
In the end we noticed a 7 inch crack along the plenun. Another CPC plenum to crack......
its off the car now and I'm tired and ready to drink some beers.
Welding it first thing tomorrow to get on with mapping in afternoon/evening.

Been mapping today to about 1.2bar, its f**king very quick but got a puncture when we got back on the drive :( luckerly not whilst doing a power run, so its been put to bed for today.

Sticking with stock on mine atm. My stock plenum isn't as :ghey: as the RB25's one

Depends on what kind of power you wish to run through it, but a greddy one will save you money in the long run when you look to mod it further.

Hasn't been mapped recently due to the weather and the puncture in the tire was only fixed today.
But I'm sure give it a couple of days and it will be near done.
We will post up a long video at the end once its all done.

your having such bad luck with the mapping phase guys! Hope you get it mapped up maybe tonight? It's decent weather now. I'm going to be doing some mapping tonight too up and down the A14 no doubt. lol. Trying to get it sweet at 1.6bar.
well, it just passed its mot, this had been one of the limiting factors;)
I'm in middlesbrough all the time also. Its just a matter of getting it done as and when we can. Its at about 1.2 bar but with the ignition backed off a far amount. I'd say its at slightly over 400 so far.
Its will be done in the next week, just the punture and some other issues. I think its normal for a build like this to have some teething problems.

split the plenum again. going to get a greddy one. Thats gonna set it back a week or so.
It only makes 0.7 bar with a 10inch split in the plenum:(

Gr post m8 loved reading it what is that noise it make when you change gears I think is it wheel spining or it tha t a BOV.!! sorry if it sound like a silly question..
neither, it's compressor surge, the bigger the turbo, the better (louder) it sounds :D

As said above its neither, I'm running with no bov and a hardpipe staright to the air filter, that makes ity even louder.
You can hear the 'chatter' from a mile away (along with the screamer from about 10 miles lol).
The plenum has been taken to a specialist aluminium fabricator/welder. We spoke for a while and decided its best to reinforce the top and bottom seams with welded on 'straps' betweeneach runner. I'll take some pics for when its done as I know lots of people have problems with non cast plenums.
If this doesnt fix it I'll order a Greddu one from Apex right away. Last chance.

thanks. gr8 info I am trying to rebuild a 1990 Sx will use a screame too. is it worth using a hard stright on a normal t25 or t28 or do the turbos have to be realy big...
That sounds AMAZING, such an angry sound :notworthy

Dont used a fake screamer pipe (they sound crap, like a blowing exhaust)
My brother s14 chatters a lot and it doesnt have a hard pipe at all. The hard pipe makes it louder but the bigger turbo is what makes it REALLY loud.

Cheers.
You'll have to come out in it if I ever happen to be somewhere you are......
I remember you saying you wanted to build an RB when I started mine, seems ages ago now.....
plenum ready tomorrow hopefully. Maybe some more mapping in the evening.
Cheers.
