View Full Version : 23 years old and insurance?
My current loan is very nearly paid off and I am considering getting another one to buy a nice clean S15 spec R. I am having trouble finding anyone who would insure me via online quotes and was wondering if there are any S15 owners my age or younger. where do you get your insurance from?
just really trying to save time next week so i dont have to phone a billion different companies :)
cheers :)
Have you tried Fluxies?
Not wanting to put you off but Im 28 with full NCB and no convictions and its costing me around 1200 quid so even if you find someone to insure you I would imagine its going to cost a packet. Might be better with a 14a and loads of spare change to spend on mods.
try a-plan, im 27 ,3 points, 4 years ncb, live in a crap hole, park car on the road, 1 accident 2 years ago and mine is around ........£1000! and they reckoned it would be cheaper if i changed insurance companies (stayed with a-plan broker) but it wasnt worth it for the last few months of me policy might as well wait till i get me 5th year ncb!

Go for a recent low mileage S14a for about £7k and you've got £4k+ to spend on mods :) Or just spend £10k on the S13 and have a bit of change :D
lol yeah in some respects i wish id done that! but hey i got something diferent and i like that cos im a tart!
Try www.elephant.co.uk I'm 23 and got a quote for an S15 at £650 - although i do stay in the country on the outskirts of Aberdeen

I have tried getting quotes for S15 insurance previously and everyone said I have to be 25 or over. I am also 23. I barely got insured on my S14a through Admiral but only under TPFT. No one will cover me fully comp. I got 3 points 4 years ago and 2 years NCB and haven't had any accidents.
If I were you, I'd buy a nice S14a for £5k-£6k and use rest for modifying whether it be looks or power you are after (or even a bit of both).
wow thanks for reminding me about elephant.
i tried it the other week but the online quote wasnt working when i tried so i gave up.
just went on it now and it quoted me £697 fully comp on a 1999 Spec R.
looks like I am going to have to start saving up then. hopefully by autumn i can order an S15 :D
After seeing all these cheap quotes when compared to what Im paying I just checked out the Elephant website and they dont list the S15 at all. They have the older Silvia's and a 200 SX-R import, but thats it. Gave them a call to be told that they wont insure the S15 at all. :(
so whats the SX-R import?
i didnt know there was an S14a R?

maybe its the 270R :D :D
Elephant cover my skyline but I checked up on the S15 and they quote me £815, im 23 with 2 years NC with clean licence.
that doesnt seem a bad price at all,
currently with fluxie on a rev3 mr2 with lots of mods (280 atw) is 700 for me and the wife 31 / 29 full ncb and protection (she has only been driving 2 years)
checked with them to see what it will be when the 15 arrives and with body kit, zorst and filter = £730 4 a new policy
looks like it should finally be here anyday so ill be getting some more quotes soon, and i think according to that quote ill be trying elephant.
Elephant are great. Just don't do any mods or they'll cancel...

wont bother ringing them then
Does anyone know what the SX-R is on the Elephant site? Its labeled as 1999 onwards, the Silvia runs from 1984 onwards. so i thought the SX-R is more likely??
Probably the S15 Spec R, but I'd check.
why dont you drop an sr20 or rb25 in your s13, you will get a better car for 10 grand of mods then 250bhp of s15. You can also do this progressively and thus not need a loan
I would never consider getting a loan to get a car, waste of money much better to wait till you can afford things
Im 23 with 2 years no claims but live in a decent area (well decent postcode, not area) no problem on s14a
s15 insurance is calculated as follows,
same engine as s14a = 800 quid
bigger turbo plus newer = 400 quid more
unsubstantiated illogical import addition = 400 quid
I managed to calculate the unsubstantiated illogical import addition by working out how much more a mitsi FTO import costs over a 200sx UK spec for being less powerful LOL

Aye, insurance on an FTO is a joke, we've had members from the club (www.ftooc.org) upgrade to Skylines, RX7's, etc. and either saved on insurance, or paid something stupid like £50 extra..
All seems to be down to 19 year old drivers getting them, and smashing them up :( 200bhp + No experience = Trouble.
NOI.

One very good reason:
Value of a 1999/2000 S15 Spec R in 2003: £13000
Value of a 1999/2000 S15 Spec R in 2005 £12500-13000
Compare that to the value of your suggested conversion now and in two years time. You get very little money back on heavily modded cars unless you strip and sell on.

thats odd
the pulsar is group 20 and this years insurance was £800, im 22

I dont think the SX-R is the S15 Spec R when I called them I was told they wont cover the 15. Some people on here seem to have got qoutes but not sure if they are for the right car. Might just depend on which numpty you speak to on the quote line.
If its listed as 'SX-R' instead of 'Silvia R' they wouldn't know unless they personally knew the car. Worth a call for clarification...
I cant see that lasting very long nicely, nobody wants an old nissan at the end of the day. Just like the 350Z may be expensive now but after the first couple of years it will 300ZX it down in to the bargain basement.
Its the fact that its import only and hasn't flooded the market (like Skylines) that is keeping the prices up. The 300ZXs & 350Zs aren't import only.
One thing is for sure though: £500 depreciation in two years is pure fiction in the world of S13s and S14/as. S15 residuals are always going to be vastly superior to them. Just compare the price for a mint 1999/2000 S14a...
OK I give you the fact that it will always be worth more then british 200sxs which are practically without value, but surely it will depreciate in japan and thus be cheaper to get imports. I have know import companies charging 3 grand for cars (must be very cheap in Jap land) especially with Shaken tests coming up.
edit:
doh getting off the poor guys subject, sorry
insurance yes expensive ;)

s15s are still very much loved in japan, prices out there are still "High" for these cars, there are only a limited number over here which means obviously yout going to pay a higher price, dont expect insurance to be on the same value as a normal 200,
imports are becomming quite hard to insure my renewal on the GTI-R is up in the next couple of months, £1k for insruance really is fine, but buying an s15 you wont loose much if you had to resell it,
im looking at an FD3S next (Gen 3 RX7) and the prices over here for these is falling somewhat, but id still buy an import one straight off the docks rather than one here,
had a quick look at the s15 as it will be in the price bracket (just) but the rear lights put me off,

You can get the Lexus style clear rears for £150+p&p from Newera parts. Probably the first mod I'd do to an S15, the rear lights are the only thing that puts me off, and the only 'bad' thing on the cars lovely styling. They wouldn't look out of place on an 80's car tbh.. Hehe ;)
Not usually a fan of clear / Lexus lights, but I think they look very very nice, especially on a white Spec-R.

could get a monster RX7 for the price of the s15 thou, presonally think clear back lights on most cars look shockingly bad,
dont wana get a stock car, rather get something fairly tuned up
hey,
I posted the question about Elephant.co.uk and silvia spec r insurance a long time ago. I too thought the 200SX-r was a silvia spec R (1999 onwards is the same as the silvia etc etc), but the car is not labelled an import (all imports on their database are labelled as imports and cant be quoted online).
I called them up and elephant talked to their underwriting team which is what I did to insure my current car which was not on their list (import hyundai coupe), and a few days after asking they added my exact model to their list. but when I asked this for the S15 they said it was a different car.
they asked for the S15 vin and a V5 copy (which I got from a friend) and they said their 200sx-r is for a different car.
Therefore, if they checked against a genuine S15 VIN number and declined, it must be a different car. However the twats dont know what car its meant for!!!
So what did you get insured on??
i still havent got a S15, but prob will try adrian flux because they gave me a good quote a few months ago (although the quote is no onger valid). 21 yrs old, 1 year ncb (been named driver most of my life), S15 spec r 8000 miles a year, garaged, cat1 etc, £1500 (or thereabouts) with highway insurance.
i'm also considering a 350z import, i'm unsure as to what I should get.
350z is a nice car, but would you not be even more to insure that??
thats what i thought, but its not been the case as far as quotes go. Ive had a few good 350z (fairlady z) quotes at around £1600, and some at £9000 (****kers).
£9000 - thats laughable.
So just to jump back, will i not be able to insure my S15 using the Elephant web-site??
well the 200sx-r on their database is not the S15, and the silvia isnt either (its an older silvia), so no is the unfortunate answer.

Fluxy wont insure on imports if your under 25 will they?
holset1 - who are you insured with?? and if you dont mind me asking, how old are you?

Im with Fluxys and am the ripe old age of 27.
fluxy did quote me, but that was in december, maybe theyve changed their policy re. <25 yr olds and imports?

Just repeating what Id been told by a guy at work. Fluxy wouldnt cover him on imports because of his age, but were happy to cover him on an Evo 8 FQ300. Not sure what logic they are working to.
old insurance wives tall its believed that if its imported then they are likely to have hidden mods and also no known history therefore hard to access the risk factor involved in insuring said car! all bull crap insurers hid behind really to bump up premiums!
