hi all
i just purchased a s14 and had a go at drifting last night it went pretty well  but i didn't go too mad.

The car is bog standard at the moment can anyone make any suggestions as to what my first mods should be? air filter, exhaust, and dv are on order but just wanted to know what to do handling wise without spending a fortune.

Thanks

And remember the way forward is sideways! :)

forget about the filter, exhaust and DV. cancel the order and buy a diff instead. then you're set for life

Agreed. If I could start again I'd buy a mechanical diff and some decent suspension first. Oh, and a bucket seat

not really such a thing in the uk, you might get lucky if you find someone whos imported a car with one but is too much of a pussy to live with the clunks though:)

Havenīt the slightest ideia.. but I would also like to know.

My S13 also needs a dif.. I started with the intake and suspension, but should have gone for the dif rigth away.

1 way no lock on deceleration
1.5 way some lock on deceleration
2 way pretty much the same amount of lock on deceleration as on acceleration.

The clunking is at low speed with alot of steering lock, it is the plates in the diff having to move large amounts in one go, as the difference in inner and outer wheel speed is increased during this manouvre this way, it's no big deal, but can freak newbies out.. An easy way to never hear it again is to replace all 3 point turns with dirty half donuts :wack:

If you don't like the clunks you can always get an uprated viscous unit, which is probably what I'll do . Tempted to go 400%-500% uprated so it's still usable on road, and pretty good as drift diff (just not as good as a mechanical).

So whatīs best for drifting? 1 way?

1.5 or 2way really

It all depends on your personal Prefrenece as to what you feel 'best' with.

IMO suspension first

its easy to forget just how wallowy the SX is in standard trim...

LOL.. thatīs a nice pic. I remember the S13 before receiving the TEIN springs.. I almost had a near accident with a lamp post or a tree. :annoyed: And I wasnīt trying to drift.. only trying to get home!

a 1, 1.5 or 2 way LSD is still going to help next to naff all when 2 wheels are off the ground ;)

What real world difference would having a 1.5 or 2 way diff make?

Which is considered the best to have for drifting with still a bit of road use?

Yeah.. Iīm also interested. Like if you have 2way when you downshift do the wheels lock up?

TBH with my 2 way diff I've found its made very little real world difference, apart from the clunks and occasional jerk if I lift off on corners. The wheels don't lock up when you downshift with the revs matched etc.

1.5 would be the best choice if it's primerily a road car.. I've had both 1.5 and 2way on my car and the only time you notice is when it's really wet or icey..

'diff' is 'deff' the way to go.
i had a nasty old mk2 escort years ago real rotter it was a 1.6 and went ok.
the diff went bang one day so we fitted another....and another..........and 3 MORE untill we decided enough was enough and welded it soild!
now drifting was a piece of piddle even with about 70bhp.

now you woudnt have stood a single eye-o-ta of a drift with a normal diff but boy was it hard to drive, it went straight on at sharp corners, screeched like the hand brake was still on when you were parking on full lock and EATE TYRES LIKE 2 rears in 1500 miles but no matter how much abuse we gave it, it never broke again. agreed its not ideal but the moral of this little story is DO THE DIFF FIRST!
whats the point of 200bhp and no real way of putting it into controlled corners?
the diff will make a siht driver good and a better driver EVEN BETTER.

in my opion anyway.

So what was the difference? Did the 2 way lock up that bit quicker?

Who would want a 2 way opposed to a 1/1.5?

PhilMorrison
22-02-2005, 19:28
depends on your drift style, I like 2 way, as off throttle it's like pulling the handbrake a little..

I'd rather get good in a [relatively] standard car, than uprate the car to cope with my lack of skill, but that's just me :)

would a 2 way be better for shift locking?

Ahh excuses excuses Alex :)

At the end of the day, you just get used to your car. If you then put a diff on, you'll have to readjust your driving style anyway, so just do it and get used to it earlier! Thats the way I looked at it anyway ;)

I bet you have to do a lot less clutch work when you got LSD :D

Should have made that a priority on mine S13, see if this summer we can arrange that :ghey:

Final Stage are the bollox when it comes to suppying diffs. real cheap and they know what they're on about with them too:)

an S14 diff is a temporary measure really. if you currently have an open diff then its an upgrade, but isn't even close to a clutch diff in performance. In fact, welding the diff is a much better idea than a VLSD

04-03-2005, 14:20
unless you need to drive it daily and cant afford tyres every week ;)

yeah, I was on about with a welded diff. :)

Matt_T
04-03-2005, 14:32
thats not much different. I don;t understand the attitude to welded diffs people have. sure its noisy, jerky and uncomfortable, but so are coilovers and everyone laps them up

Where did you get your diff from?

talk to alex or glen on driftworks, not sure if they have a website yet. thats who I got my diff from though.

AlexF

And people wonder why I don't want a locked diff! I'm running 18's and refuse to put crap tyres on :)

Reckon an upgraded VLSD is my only real option ...
