View Full Version : Opposite Lock

Hi, I was my first drift tuition day last weekend, it went very well but there was one thing I was wondering.

In a lot of the drift dvd's i've seen when the car breaks traction the driver lets go of the steering wheel and it applies opposite lock by spinning itself, he then catches it and only needs to make small adjustments to hold the drift.

The main problem I had was not catching the drift quick enough and therefore spinning out, it only occured to me afterwards that maybe I should have let the wheel do it's own thing a bit more?

It's not as easy as it bloody looks it is? :annoyed:

I'm actually in Ireland, it was over here. How about the Drift Academy though? Dunno if they're any good but they use an S14 www.driftacademy.co.uk :)

The simple answer is YES. If you can do it that way once you will never go back. To be honest, it makes it easy :D Never spun my car EVER and I've had it at some pretty silly angles (at track days of course) :D

So when it starts to slide you just leave it go until you're at the angle you want and then catch it?

It's a tad more complex than that but in it's most basic form, yes :)

I'm talking about when the drift starts early really, I assume it doesn't work with power oversteer on the corner exit, I was fine with that it was just when I did a clutch kick or handbrake before the start of the corner I almost always did a 180 mid corner even if I was off the power as soon as it starts to slide

You should use this technique when initiating ANY drift whether it's shift lock or power over or handbrake. Allow the slide to begin, as it gets to the angle you want, apply lock. It's not quite that simple as there is the little matter of timing. But you will get there with practice.

Thanks Mate, I'll try it at the next drift day

Can't do any worse I spose :whip:

The reasoning behind it is that the front wheels want to point in the direction of travel and the car can wind the lock on far quicker than you can

note- this technique fails miserably if you fit adjustable tension rods and don't get them set up :wack: :(

That's right, It was the Irish D1 number 1 and 2 doing the teaching in your own car, i'll be at the next one aswell to try out the new technique above!

And no adjustable tension rods btw :D

Matt. set them up as per the std ones for now, maybe give them half a turn to give a little more castor. At least thats what Im planning when it all comes off for rebushing ;)

Hmm is this based on the same principle of when i go round a mini roundabout and let go of the steering wheel a the right time and it automatically straitens up?

God, i so need to find a big smooth car park with no cctv, and someone who will give me tyres :D

i dont think i even realised i let go of steering wheel when drifting til someone in car with me said it ,it was just something i did without thinking , i never was drifting and thought , now let go the wheels ,if u can find somewhere with room try doing an s shave drift , say drift to left then let weight transfer back over to left its that bit in the middle were u need to let go of wheel then catch it back, sure call in some day more then willing to show u in your car lol
u should of come to the beach in the 740 u d of learned how to let go in 5mins there
