if you want a game which isn't about drifting but IS about feel, try LFS or GPL (both are out there as demos) .. they're both relatively heavy on the geometry tuning which is a good thing imo, and GPL in particular teaches throttle control ;)

you can get battle gear 3 for the ps2 but it only comes in a jap version so u need your console chipped r a swap magic to run it.
there is another game called kaido battle 2 which kicks bg3s ass imo but thats also a jap game.
i have both of these games and im running them with a swap magic bootdisk so if you get them and have any trouble getting them going let me know and ill try and help

how does swap magic work??

sxmad
17-02-2005, 22:06
you basicly put the swap disk in first then when it loads u use a lil tool they give u with it to remove the swap disk without the ps2 knowing whats going on, put in your jap game then you just hit the x button and your away.

www.modchipstore.com/customer/product.php?productid=16158&cat=103&page=1

this is where i got mine with no hassle just make sure u order the pal version.

sometimes u need a second bootdisk to get a jap game going but this is only a small downloadable file burned onto a cdr.{im not sure where to get it as my bro got it but i can find out :) }

it might sound a bit of a pain in the arse but after doing it once or twice its a piece of piss :D

Just ordered a boot disk and battle gear :D :D

Would i be right in saying the drifting is a little more realistic than NFSU 2? :p

sxmad
18-02-2005, 14:15
yea its much better than nfsu2 IMO but lads get kaido battle 2:chain reaction as well as battle gear, it is a much better game as battle gear is more arcadey
kaido battle is like a better version of nfsug2 based on a graphics engine more like the gt series its top dog imo.
and that new yukes d1 game looks top too

wait a bit and get yourself the new GT4 and turn TCS and ASM off - it's fabulous - we played the jap version a week ago - it's not meant specialy for drift but it's realistic enough to do it all day long:D

sxmad
27-02-2005, 16:25
i thought the new gt was going to have drift events on it

i got a copy of yukes d1 and im not sure if i like it or not  it has no tunning options and very little setting adjustment. the only way to use a car with more power is pick one of the d1 pro-drivers cars

the drift battles with other cars is sweet with your bumber able to be clipped of with a touch of a wall or another car :D the tracks are more open than the likes of bg3 and kb2 but me thinks kb is still the one for me :smitten:

as far as the handling and overall feel of the game im undecided

s14a Ben

hmmm sounds like that yukes isnt all that but then again ill have to try it to see.

Am i being a retard or wot??

Got 2 discs with the swap disc box, a CD and a DVD version, both load, then i swap the disc for battle gear 2 and it tells me its not a valid ps2 disc. it does this for both cd and dvd "swap" discs

now it refuses to load the dvd disc at all and i'm getting stressed

this has been a very crap day so far, so has anyone got ideas?

I've been playing the Yukes D1 game tonight. Its weird, for the first 5 minutes i played i thought it was rubbish, it felt funny and the graphics are a bit ropey, plus the animation is jerky and slow sometimes. Then i started doing the liscense tests and i realised that its actually quite hard, but surprisingly addictive. It took me most of the night to get my D1 liscense, probably cause i suck.

Once i did i played Irwindale and had some cool battles, eventually getting beaten by Ueno. Now i've stopped playing i really want to play it again so it must have some sort of playability.

did you try using the slid tool to open the drawer. slid the tools in with the hook facing the right side of the drawer. and slid it along again because it might be stuck?

has anyone heard of this? looks quite good (INITIAL D SPECIAL STAGE)

MiRo
09-03-2005, 14:07
What version of Swap magic do you have? What version ps2 do you have? (serial number on the back)

I've got the original games and backup of most of my games, works fine everytime! Including Battle Gear 3. You have to make sure that you put the discs in level. If they put in on the piss, they won't load correctly.
-Milo

P.S: I never get the 'not a ps2 disc' screen. When it doesn't load the borders of the screen turn pink, a sucessful load has a blue border. Swap magic 2 US build, on a US Ps2.

s14a Ben
09-03-2005, 17:54

iv got the game and it works which is a big relif but the only thing is that its only in black and white. has anyone got any ideas?
and is there a UK option so i know what it says :p

Genjuro
10-03-2005, 20:12
Which game are you talking about? I'm assuming its black and white because either you don't have a scart lead or because your tv doesn't accept a 60hz signal. There will be no UK option unfortunatly, the games aren't usually that hard to figure out, they drive just like us you know.

sxmad
10-03-2005, 20:58
dont bother with initial d special stage :ghey:  :ghey:
all the cars drive the same, 0 to 120 in about 3 secs, onless your a inital d fan well them dont bother.

as far as jap games comming up in black and white there is an easy way around it. you can get a small downloadable file and rip it on a cdr, then use it with the swap magic and hey presto.
I dont know the link to this file cause my bro got it, but i will find out just pm me if you want it so ill remember to get it.

s14a Ben
13-03-2005, 23:03
there is one but i cant remember what it is. i saw it when i was looking for tips for the kaido battle. ill have to see if i can find it again but it wont be for the UK xbox. you will need yours chipped

Rob-S13
14-03-2005, 00:04
want it chipped anyway, once chipped games can be saved directly onto it.

so say for instance i hired/borrowed a game. I'd have it forever :D

I have NFSU 1 & 2, the driftings good, but i've nailled them both so need a new challenge

s14a Ben
14-03-2005, 19:06

yeah i appriciate even the average person can drift on NFSU, but i've never seen anyone drift like i can on their, if you understand drift you can pull off some hard core business.

Road rage 3 isn't drift is it?

14-03-2005, 23:02

MiRo
24-03-2005, 17:47
Depends on what car your driving mate. If you were going for tha pimp FR stylee' with the AE85 like I was in the beginning, your going to be strugling for a loooong ass time. Buy a Starlet Turbo, might be FF, but it will accelerate away from most things with weight reductions and a bigger turbo  Shouldn't take you more than 5-6 gamedays to beat the first track with this setup. Once you get a sponsor its easy sailing really, I beat the next two touge's before I changed car. S13 and EVO3 were my next bitches'

-Milo

s14a Ben
26-03-2005, 10:22
but the thing is iv completed loads apart from the monster weight stage thing on the first track. i cant get any sponsors. i have a 215bhp mini beast which kicks the 350z and the s2000 in the night time car park but i cant get any further.

James N
26-03-2005, 18:41
I've got a 161 bhp starlet and it seems i cant tune it anymore, and the s2000 and 350 are far too quick

MiRo
26-03-2005, 22:21
I whopped the S2000 after I got my first sponsor engine with the starlet (190bhp). Go beat the white bodykitted FTO (slasher). Weight reduction, and stage 2 roll cage do help the little starlet through the corners. :) I also put a Stg1 1-way LSD

S14a Ben: Slasher is the one to beat to get sponsorships and get further. Go to your connection net and check all your messages, and click yes to anything that comes up ((!) messages), then he should be waiting for you that night. He'll be marked in Yellow in the parking lot.

s14a Ben
28-03-2005, 21:28
iv been through all of my messages and nothing has come up. iv even started again just to see if i have missed somthing. i have a 170bhp starlet which handles pretty good and beaten everything. when i had my mini i kicked the s2000 and the 350Z and all i got was a medal. im doin somthing wrong here im sure. its starting to get abit boring just going over the same stuff. when in the game do i see the FTO then? how many night races have you won?

I'm also stuck pretty much on KB2... I've got the Starlet Glanza at 175bhp but I can't beat the 350z yet, and haven't tried the FTO. And I still can't manage to do the stage 2 race yet either.

Question: How the hell do you know what ANY of those email messages are on about? They're all jap and therefore gobbledegook to me...

How do you get a sponsor?

s14a Ben
03-04-2005, 16:54
well iv had the starlet for ages now and iv beten everything in the carpark apart from the s2000 and the 350z because they are just medals which mean nothing. what could i buy to do the heavy weight stage on the first track?

Oh dear... just found this review of Touge-R

Touge R - review

Don’t you just hate women sometimes? I mean they go around touting how independent they are and how smart they are, but sometimes their idiocy defies belief. I ask you now that if Emily Pankhurst had been some kind of time travelling type guy and had been able to travel forward to the year 2003 and seen what her free, independent women had become, would she have thrown herself under the hooves of the kings horse? I somehow doubt it.
Take into consideration a girl this reviewer once dated named Kirsty. Now, Kirsty was strikingly beautiful – she looked like tennis player Martina Hingis, but without the lesbian haircut, the awful teeth and the ability to play tennis to the ability to attain No. 1 in the WTA rankings. We had an absolutely cracking evening out taking in the acclaimed black comedy American Beauty starring Kevin Spacey and the fat-titted, rising teen star Thora Birch. Then we went to a local restaurant and dined on relatively unimpressive but very-nice-for-the-money-thankyou-I-was-a-student-at-the-time pasta.

We talked, we laughed, and we joked. It was a truly enjoyable evening. On the way up the stairs to the car park I could see she had a truly enjoyable ass (remember guys, walk 3 steps behind your lady when climbing stairs). It couldn’t have been better. I walked her to her door, said goodnight and asked her if she wanted to go out again. “Sure. I had a great night. Call me tomorrow!” And that was that. Kirsty was mine.

So the next day I called her as I’d promised and she’d asked. Funny… Her phone was switched off. “Ah well, I’ll try her again later. She’s probably at work.” 10pm came and I called again. “Hmmm… She must have had an early night or something”. And so on that went for a week until I thought “Hmmm, something’s up here. I’ll ask her best friend.”

Her best friend was no more the wiser than me. “I’ve not been able to get hold of her all week.” she said. This is when you kind of start to panic. Is she OK? Maybe she’s dead? Or a family member has been killed and she’s on the run from Scotland Yard due to circumstantial evidence planted by her demented half-brother Richard Stevenson-Harris? You just don’t know. So I called her every night for another week and a half until eventually deciding that Scotland Yard had probably caught up with her. With his half-sister's misery completing the final part of the puzzle, Richard Stevenson-Harris could finally control the oceans and take over the world with his waves of powerful briny fury.

Another couple of weeks later, a friend of mine asked me how we were getting on and I’d explained my plight to him with the use of diagrams, over-expressive body language and foul language. “Maybe you should call her again?” he offered. So I did. And she answered and hung up immediately. I followed this up with a text message. “Where have you been? I’ve been worried.” The terse reply was not what I’d been hoping for. “I don’t want to see you again. Can’t you take the hint? What are you, a psycho?”

Well, so sorry! There was me thinking that when she said “I had a great night. Call me tomorrow!” she actually meant “I had a great night. Call me tomorrow!” What she actually meant was “Please never speak to me again. I don’t like you.” Funny how the two sexes interpret what we say completely differently, isn’t it? Cleverly, because she’d left her phone off for a whole month to avoid me, she lost contact with a large number of her friends and probably died alone (although I can’t verify that she’s actually dead). And to think if she’d used some common sense and just let me down on the night or the next day, none of that would have ever happened.

Of course not all women are that stupid. Just the ones I date. Indeed, I’m sure Emily Pankhurst would have still thrown herself under that horse, but not before slapping Kirsty upside the head for letting the side down. In the commotion, the evil Richard Stevenson-Harris could have stolen the time machine and travelled back to prehistoric times, enslaved the dinosaurs and brought them back to 1992 and destroyed the Earth with his evil Dinoslaves™. Such horrors don’t bear thinking about.

Why am I boring you with a story of unrequited love and female stupidity? It’s simple. Touge R is the most pointlessly crap and derivative driving game I’ve played in a long time, and I thought that by telling you the story, you might at least derive some entertainment from something with the name Touge R on it. The Touge (which translates as “Mountain Road”) series began on PSone. It was the first mountain racing title, cashing in on the popularity of Initial D before Sega, Sammy and Taito even thought about it. Since then a lot has changed. You no longer have to be Polyphony or have their resources to make a decent racing title these days and most importantly Initial D and Kaido Battle have completely covered the mountain racing sub-genre from both arcade and simulation angles.

Atlus have added all of the standard modes. There’s Carrozzeria which is like your standard Gran Turismo-esque mode where you buy cars and earn money to add more bits to said cars. There are a variety of different race types, all of which you’ll have seen before, such as a manufacturers' cup, drivetrain cup and various braking, acceleration and skill tests. You also have Challenge Race, which is another name for arcade mode. You have the option to choose any car and any course and whether you race against one or two randomly chosen opponents. Then we have a free run mode which is rather self-explainatory, as you would think the 2Players mode would be as well, but 2Players bafflingly allows up to four players to compete. Fair play to Atlus for breaking down the boundaries of achievement within the two player mode…

The cars on offer are pretty much exactly the same cars you’ve driven in every other Japanese racing game ever. Obviously the Truenos, Skylines and Civics are in full effect, all of which come in a variety of colours. Interestingly each car's default colour is the same as the colour sported by the “star cars” in Initial D, so the Silvia is minty green and the Civic SiR is red. Make of that what you will.

The problem with said cars is that the handling varies between awful and average. Who knows, maybe the handling is incredibly realistic, but it’s certainly not much fun. The amount of deceleration before the cars even attempt to turn is excessive and races become a start-stop-start affair as you attempt to navigate the hairpins. This is quite a shame as some of the courses are rather nicely laid out.

Presentation-wise, the game looks like a polished PS2 title. There is some quite nice detail on the cars and the texturing on the courses is above average, but the visuals lack the overall polish that you find in most racing games these days. The sound effects are utterly dreadful, with cars sounding like hoovers and drifts sounding like a sewing machine in full flow. The music is passable, but certainly nothing special, a problem worsened by the lack of selectable soundtrack.

Touge R has all the ingredients of a decent racing title, but like so many before on the market, the cooking has gone horribly wrong, leaving you with a title which isn’t so much truly awful, but below par and uninteresting enough to make you think it’s awful. Initial D and Kaido Battle are both far more fun mountain racing games and whilst neither are available on Xbox, there are also far better Xbox racing games available anyway.

Maybe it’s yet another dastardly plot by the charismatic Richard Stevenson-Harris to destroy importers spirits with sub-par racing game? If so, you’d better sleep with one eye open cos I’m coming to get you, you evil son of a bitch…
