We have just had a couple of sample bonnets come through to test. One plain S13 and one plain S14. The quality of these things is awesome, by far the best Ive seen yet. We have an S14a and S13 one to try. The bonnets have the crease lines as with the original and the sharpness of the creases are superb. Very crisp.

Ive just got to fit them to our S13 and S14 to see how well they go on :) Going by the look and finish Id epect them to be absolutely perfect :)

bren
15-02-2005, 09:35
Theyre going to be under £400 for the plain, just over for the vented. Final prices havent been decided yet as it depends on a load of variable, quantity, mode of shipping etc.

Cooling panels are £195 :) Thats for a full size one, not a small cut down version.

Theyre Apex ;)

bren
15-02-2005, 09:54
I havent had chance to trial fit them as yet.

It will have one vent with a sweeping built up section roughly following the original swage lines. They look pretty cool  Ill be fitting one to our S13 :)

Bren,

this may be a bit of a bodge, but on the 14a version do you think there is any way of cable tying the bonnet to the catch or something else to avoid using bonnet pins?

Chris B
15-02-2005, 13:06
Very nice fit Bren

Is the skeleton Fibreglass ?

What is the total weight of the bonnet?

Jolly F
15-02-2005, 13:07
Stop teasing and fit the S14a one!!!! :p

bren
15-02-2005, 13:07
The problem is with the catch itself. I wouldnt be happy trusting it to hold the bonnet shut at high speed. It would probably be absolutely fine, I know Jez has done over 130 with no issues but I would fit pins to be doubly sure.

Can you imagine what would happen if a bonnet came off at high speed??!!

bren
15-02-2005, 13:11
Yeah they have a fibreglass skeleton. I dont know what they weigh but not a lot

The S14a is now down at my mums so we can store the S13 in the unit. I didnt like leaving it outside the house, some fecker was bound to nick it at some point. Ive got to take the new bonnet down to try it :)

VIDAL BABBOON
15-02-2005, 20:13
There are always other ways guys

I have been thinking about ways around using bonnet pins as I definitely do not want them, but don’t trust the catch either (have you seen how much the std bonnet moves around :wack: )

Im looking at bonding something to the underside of the bonnet with say an eyelet attached to a wire!
Then finding somewhere under the front wings to fix it and keep it taught!!

Not bothered about the extra hassle it's going to cause as long as I don’t have to have bonnet pins lol.

Keep me posted on the bonnet Please Bren :)

JulesS14200
15-02-2005, 23:03
I hardly ever drive over 80 :ghey: so would probably be ok without pins really but I'd still want something there to be sure.

Or if I did pins, a mate of a mate works with carbon fibre so I could get him to drill it, but if he fcuked it up I will be gutted

Paul200sx
15-02-2005, 23:24
carbon fibre bonnet pins! blend in nicely!

bren
16-02-2005, 11:17
Drilling the bonnets isnt a problem. I drilled out the one on our S13 to fit the wahser jets and you get a little bit of cracking but the plates with the bonnet pins would easily cover that. Id drill the bonnet thats on our S13 now or the one we have just removed to prove theres no problem but theyre both going to be sold as Im goingto fit one of the vented bonnets instead.

Im just waiting for a batch of pictures to come through of all the parts the manufacturers can supply :)

Sorry guys, been so busy at work and needed to resize the pictures. I was hoping to take some better pictures too.

Anyway, in all very impressed. The fit is good, great compared to others i've seen. A few small modifications are needed but nothing that you wouldn't expect. The bonnet catch tabs need cutting back a bit. Washer jet holes need opening to fit. There will ne holes needed to fit the rubber seals but i didn't get that far. Be careful doing this, i guess it could be bonded but not sure if it would be a lasting thing.

Just thought I'd mention that Jolly's bonnet didn't come off at 140mph on Saturday night and no bonnet pins on it yet :D

bren
11-04-2005, 14:09
Thats not a clever idea. He will be crying big time when the bonnet lifts and smashes his windscreen. I wouldnt want to be in the car at 140mph when it happens

Imagine what youd do if the bonnet slammed back whilst doing 140mph. It would go from closed to smashing the windscreen in a split second. Imagine what your reaction would be as a driver if that happend? It would scare the cr@p out of you and instinct could lead to you automaticaly letting go of the steering wheel and covering your face.

My mate had an Uno turbo which had a bonnet come up at 80mph and that was bad enough.

People keep ignoring what we tell then and one day someone will get seriously injured as a result. Its not going to be pretty when it happens

Jez
11-04-2005, 14:15
Agreed. My bonnet looks like its rock solid and I still fitted bonnet pins. Just not worth taking the risk

Whether on track or on road you will hit something if your bonnet flips up and smashes the screen. Takes a long time and a large distance to slow from 100mph+ and it'd be nigh on impossible to keep the car on the road if you can't see whats coming up.

SMiFFAD
11-04-2005, 14:17
Possibly dumb question but just to be sure.....

Whats the resoning behind a CF one being more likely to let go than a Steel one?

Jez
11-04-2005, 14:19
The metal hook that holds the bonnet down is just bonded into the fibreglass/carbon fibre. The forces involved at high speed can be so high they rip the hook from the fibreglass and will allow the bonnet to flip up.

SL25
11-04-2005, 14:27
I guessed cos it is a lot lighter....I have even noticed my standard one gets air under it sometimes at speed...you can see it slightly vibrating...weird.

I have had a bonnet come up at me at about 40mph before, and no, it isn't fun at all. Instinct told me to slam on the anchors which I did...stopped without hitting anything or anyone, and luckily no-one behind me at the time. Could have been a lot worse though, I sure wouldn't take the risk.

SMiFFAD

When I say door I mean door. Theyre carbon doors, you know, the swingy things that stop there being a big hole in the shell after you get in the car ;) Not doorcards, doors  No pics yet

kev - quite a bit since coupe doors tend to be quite weighty, but you could lose even more if you replaced the glass with something less heavy too :D
