View Full Version : Need to move, but move to where?
Well, looks like this period of ones life is drawing to something of a conclusion.. Now, do I..
a) move back home to Oldham, live with mother.
b) move to a completely new area of the UK, and start afresh.
or.
c) sell everything and leave the country..
Thoughts?
Well...
South England is nice but V expensive. I would recommend south coast, but prices...
before you do anything too rash, try moving about 3 foot to the left. If that isn't good, go to the right. If both of those still don't do it for you, check where the jobs are and head to a job.
Good luck!

Errm...
NOT Oldham, I can think of just about anywhere I'd rather live! But it is cheap living with your parents, leaving mucho mod potential.
Errrm, plenty of jobs/opportunities Bristol way, or.. Go to West Kent / North Essex / Herts etc and work in London. You have to do it at least once, just to know why most sane people only do it the once!!!
Canada or Australia always good, Australia has too many nasties, and Canada has too many americans, but if you don't speak another language then they have to be the main choices really.

Starion buddy, he is south coast almost, living in Swindon, M4 Corridor between Bristol and Reading, home of the Honda Civic :D :D
But yes D, follow the jobs, look for one you want apply and move for it, if you have no ties then you have nothing to lose :)
I prefer the North weather wise, much, much prefer the colder climates...
So far, have lived in Oldham, Cheltenham, and currently in Swindon. If I was going to move, I'd rather make a complete move.
I had though about the South East, but I'm not sure.
Just uber-confused  :(
:)
Swindon is hardly the South Coast, but with no offence or disrespect intended, I'm hardly a fan of the South, being a Northerner at heart :D
Wherever I move, I'm going to have to find a place to live, and some full time employment. I only earn £11300 gross annually now as it is, and I seem to do alright, so it'd have to be that amount or a bit more, which then leads to the question of what do I want to do? Which is where I fall flat on my arse again :(

Bah, with a 2*****, you are but 30 minutes drive away from the south coast :)
D mate, the North isn't a great career move really, lower salaries and less opportunities... But then you aren't being paid that much so you aren't used to the inflated SE salaries like some of us!!
If I had to say anywhere up north it would be the Leeds area, it's got lots of commerce and is increasing in size as an IT city, only problem is the racial problems that have been flaring up there.
I supposed I'd be best off decided what I want to do/be, first :(

Move somewhere where you can afford to buy a house. Getting on the housing ladder ASAP is sooooo important, when you are older, it can make hundreds of thousands of pounds of difference
Already have £205 going out each month for the car and various anciliaries I paid for with the loan I got for it..
Only other major outgoing I have is £200 rent I pay per month. The rest is swallowed up by bits and pieces, and soon to be a bit of outgoing per month by the Credit Card.
There is no way I can afford a house, as much as I would love to. :(

My mortgage is £350 pcm, for about 55k that we borrowed. You might be able to afford a flat, as has been said, it's definitely worth it!
Example. Bought my house for 53k January 2000, just sold it for 87k on Saturday... We are spending about 100k on our next house in Devon, but it's only causing us to raise the mortgage by 13k, which is about £40 pcm.

2 bedroom terraces in Oldham (with outdoor loos! :D ) going for as little as £15k... madness.
The norm seems to be about £18-19k though.
25 year secured mortgage... =... peanuts?!...

A 25k mortgage would be less than your rent mate. And the chances are that the value would goup. I would say though to get the most expensive property you can afford, because house prices tend to raise as a percentage, ie a 40k house will be 44k in the same time a 20k house becomes worth 22k... Maximise your investment :)

Don't let the racial stuff put you off mate, I'm in Leeds and never seen a wiff of any bother. Its like anywhere, its got its good bits and its bad bits. Leeds is a cool place to live nowadays there's trendy city dwellings being thrown up every week and a new bar/club seems to open every other night. It really is booming at the moment.
You'll struggle to find a decent house with your salary though, although it wouldn't be impossible, you need to find yourself a good women that earns more than you so you can Leech off her, like what me and Geoff_S14 do :):).
LOL, Yeah, when the riots were in Oldham, I couldn't believe what I saw, yet, when I went back home just to see what was going on , I saw nothing but regeneration. New schools being built, social developments (read: pubs being tarted up :D ) and so forth..
Just looking for something in a 'nicer' area of Oldham (i.e one like what where I come from ;) ).. So far nothing for less than 20k...
I could just move home and kick mum out I s'pose..
F*ck all of it....... move to Thailand and marry a lady boy!!!!!:D :D :D :D :D :D
.. Or not.. ;)
Current fave option is moving back up North, finding a job quickish earning as much as I do now, or a bit more. Then buy a lil' house.. may possibly have one or two other people who may be interested in a bit of freedom, so futher options developing..
:)
Never ever move back home .... you have done that already .... always choose the new adventure ... its the way you discover new exciting or crap things ........ move somewhere new. The UK if you are too adventurous but preferably give a new culture a go.
I'd love to go to Oz, Canada, etc. But right now, it's really not a feasible option.. Owe too much in repayments for the car/insurance/credit cards.. Etc.
Moving back to the North appeals because I've missed it, living in the South has made me soft ;)..
Doubt mum'd let me back home, so buying a small house up there is again, an appealing option.
We'll see, lots to look into, not least employment :(
(Oh, and FWIW, I've discovered I must've come from a 'good' part of Oldham, can't find any houses on the market for cheaper than 26k.. ;) :D :D :D )

D, im looking for a house at the moment, cant find anything half decent for less than £80-85k :( I too have considered moving somewhere else, the good thing about my job is that I could probably be transfered somewhere else and the pay is the same all over the UK:) I would really love to go to oz too but I dont think there is much call for heating engineers over there:rolleyes: Anyway, if you move who am I going to look out for
Dave.
LOL, This is true, nobody else but you waves mate :(
My job seems fairly secure, was discussing our plans for the office with the prat of a boss before I left work, but I just, well, it's disenchanting most of the time. Just a general inconvenience, but it pays the bills.
If I moved Northwards bound, I've got a job guaranteed, but it's sales.. Urgh.. Starting on 14.5k before bonuses, though. So it'd pay the bills (read: for mods.), but I really, *really* dislike sales..
I don't know, still mass confusion generally. Lots of thinking and researchin' to go before I even think of starting to make tracks..
Exciting in a way, yet utterly petrifying, too..
