View Full Version : Grinfing rubbing noise on full lock
been playing at Elvington today again.
Rain + concrete + shite tyres + pineapples set to drift = much wayward rear end
Spun a few times + when I had the rear waaay way out and on full lock I was getting a nasty grinding/rubbing sound like a wheel was macking contact with the boddy or something to do with the transmitions.
Any one elce had this? Is it a commun thing?
What suspension are you running?
Standard exept for some polly tie bar bushes and pineapple rings
Mine was doing that on full op lock at Silverstone, tyres did touch car somewhere, but I'm sure I could be the feel power steering grinding too. :confused:
if its only enough to make a little grindy noise I wouldn't worry. mine rub the wing on full lock and make cool little puffs of smoke across the bonnet:D
would be worth checking the tyres over to make sure theres no deep chunks missing though!
I get that noise when on full lock :thumbs: Best thing to do as Matt_T says is just check the tyres over after the session is over.

Its the inside edge of the tyre hitting the chassis rail. Check the inner arch and you'll probably find a nice shiny clean patch of metal on the lower seam.:)
I think finding a clean patch on the car might be a bit of a challenge.

OOOARE, there is a shily bit on the lip that sticks out of the rail!
Surpose I was using 205/55 on the front so they would be wie than standard but they dont run on full lock normaly.
Is it the rubber bushs letting the lower half of the strut move inwards so moveing the tyres closer to the rail?
So much for thinking about more lock :wack:
just get a big ass spacer. the stuff you hit then is easier to modify:)

Its because the car/wheel is at a funny angle when on opposite lock i.e. leaning right rather than leaning right while steering left for non-slidey driving.

Humm it wasnt a nice noise. Sounded a bit like it was locking or slowing the leading front wheel which might explain why I had a tendancy to spin when it started grinding.
Must remember to stick with 195's on the front next time. Im not keen on spacers.
It also made another interesting clunking/grinding noise when going backward in a spin... but in not sure I want to know what that was :eek:

Yellow polyurethane rings (geddit ;)) that are used to lock the rear subframe into place. They basically stop the built in flex within the stock subframe bushes.
Putting pinapples on should make the stock bushes last longer. Most s13's i have looked at to buy have had leaky bushes. If the silicone starts leaking out, they need replacing, to late for pinapples.

If you don't like spacers and still want to drift on standard wheels then there isn't much you can do to get rid of the Grrrrriiinding noise. I had the same problem when drifting around in norway. But, I didn't really pay too much attention to it.
Another solution is to get some Wheels with big offsets, then you might get rid of the noise :thumbs:

Hopefully 7 inch 16's at ET 32 is enough, but my car hasn't been drifted since september! Bloody problems.. If that's not enough, spacers will have to go on, especially if I want more lock with uprated tie-rods :cry: £££££££££££££££££££££££££££
Question: Pinapple rings Drift setting: Is the rear end more controlable, or less controlable on this setting?
RE; drift pineapple: It was difficlt to say as it was realy wet in the morning when I was just betting my self up to speed and spins! :wack:
Then it dried out a bit and ther was a dry line but if you put the back ot front end on to the web part its suddenly slid far more... it was interestng.
They do reduce the rear traction though. It currently dead easy to spin up the rear wheels when accelerating in 2nd at about 4k revs. Make over taking slow cars interesting :wack: I must remember to put them on to the normal setting.
Well I guess the other way off getting rid of it is not to use full lock.
Less of this when on full opposite lock and rubbing badly. You can see how far the wheel in tucked upnder!

Makes no difference with 195.... My one makes that noise with 195/60 or 205/55.....
Also, what's a pineapple replace?

Bumm I must have been using more speed and less lock before :indiff:
The pineapples, or rather sub frame locking kit sit above or bellow the rear subframe bushes and tilt the diff depending on the setup you use. This is theory helps to incress or reduce rear grip as well as stop the subframe moving around as much.

mine did this, especially when I added tein tie rods into the mix....
the seam on the chassis rail is beyone clean now, its completely bent out the way. I dont get rubbing now :wack:
