View Full Version : If you had £17,000 to burn?
As per my last post - I'm about to go and throw £17K of my not very hard earned cash on a brand new Skoda Octavia vRS.
This prompted a bit of debate, and I've re-read that post and decided on the onset of age and maturity is taking its toll - I mean I'll be buying 'Caravan Monthly' next.
Anyroad, I'm curious now, if you were in my position what would you plump for?

Supra TT with plenty of bits to go with it - and about 2 grand on insurance at my age :( But it would either be that or an Evo VI for sure. hmmmmmmmmm, if only I had that sort of money. Maybe one day. :(
Although, I have to say I do like the new Skodas and the RS is quite fast as well isnt it? Should give a standard SX a bit of a problem I'd imagine.
But I still think u ought to cancel the Skoda and get a supra. :) (then give the supra to me)

Tune the 200, live life to the full with it and then wonder where it's all gone.

Lotus esprit for me, Would you believe its cheaper to insure than the 200! £420 f/c compared to £381 for the lotus ( 2.2 turbo).

Either R33 and tune it, or an R34 and start saving to tune it.

8 Starion And a partridge in a pair tree..
I voted for the even hairier RWD monster option :) I'll go for the more sensible Skyline when I have a family :D :D :D

Got to be a Skyline...........I mean has anything else got a 'G' meter in???:) :)
I voted for a Hairy RWD monster (not the sort of vehicle seen in dumb and dumber though ;) )
Is there anything else you can have as much fun in??? I think the 4x4 jobbies do too much for the driver, especially the new Skylines, which, for me, take the fun away a little.
A friend has an Impreza STi, sure It'll kick my arse down the lanes, but it doesnt demand much from the driver to drive it fast - just the confidence to push the car.
RWD is MUCH more fun, and challenging to drive :D :D
......thats my 2p's worth anyhows
...why not have a go in the Civic Type R?
Nik
For £17k you cauld get the most mintest (is that a real word  ) RS500 Cosworth - an oldie, but a total Classic :)
Only thing is, if you got one would you drive it, or lock it away in a garage and trailer it to shows :(
The latter would be a damn shame, but I think this happens to a fiar few of them already :(
Type R civic, one word
Scrabble :D :D
The Skoda is a Scrabble wagon as well, is it not?
Nik
id have to say tuning the 200, its a great car, and i want good potential for it, no point in me buying a supra or skyline cos for the money they are, i would barely have enough change to afford the insurance...then cost of tyres and insurance etc.....fact....i wont be able to leave cars like that standard....so i may as wlel finish the 200 and make it a job well done:)

Not really, no.
Not as much as that bloody type R anyway. Tiny amounts of torque so it feels as muscular as a newborn.
I agree that the CTR does have rather strange power delivery. This does mean that it is not to everyone's taste, it's one of those things you have to try and decide for yourself really. You'll either love it or hate it. Personally I love it! Used to run a 'Teg which was great and I am just in the process of getting the CTR for my missus.

Those Type R's are quick though, well quick to 125 anyway :)
i'd toon the 2***** defo, and also sort the suspension on my Volvo estate.
I 'spose it also depends on what you use the car for, how long you spend in it etc etc. If it's a second car and you have pots of cash to run it, then a Cerby is the answer.
Personally I would not buy a new motor off the forecourt cos of depreciation. The only reason the missus is getting a CTR is cos it's a company car. If you are willing to own an older car there are some real bargins out there, the 200 being a perfect example.
Because of my situation (ilive 5 miles from work and have access to another car) I would buy the fastest, stupidest, most impractical car I could get my grubby hands on:D And have done so in the past!

RWD hairy monster for me.
As already somebody already mentioned - probably a TVR, either Griffith or even better a 450 SEAC (shoet wheel base, kevlar body, fooking huge engine, and apparently the loadest exhaist known to man)

M8 of mine has a Cerbera, and we run a book on whether it ever starts first time.
His words and I quote.... "Most unreliable piece of fecking Brit Cr@p that I have ever had the misfortune to own. But it's so much fun on the odd occasion that it decides to work."
I reckon that if you sort a 2***** properly, it will be just as much fun. And if done properly, more reliable.

Um I'm sure the figure £17000 was quoted... so what sort of state must the R34 be in to cost that??? And as for a TVR Cerbera at £17k... expect about the same in bills once you've bought it within the first year if you find one going for that price!!!
I'd save another 2 grand and by an BMW M Roaster :)

I've seen a few around that price.
I think the R33 would be the better option though, at least you could get a few small mods done.
Pah .... spend 7K on a bike .... it will scare the living sh1te out of you way more than anything else mentioned so far.
the other 10k on modding the 200sx so it doesnt feel so dull, since you bought the bike.

maybe true but would you touch them? I still see most R34s at about £25k+ (mind you I'm only talking about the GTR models...)
And you're right about the R33... they seem to be averaging at about £15k.
I'm starting to sound like Quentin Wilson :/

Dax Rush Cosworth Quadra. :)
Or maybe one of their wierd Kamala things.

Dax Kamala? egh!
Shame there isnt' a V8 mid engined open 2 seater that does not cost Ultima money (but the Kamala aint it, and it aint cheap either).
Now kitcars have been mentioned, that brings up some very very nice ones for 17k (Mmmm... bike engined roadsters... Jag D-type replicas... GTM KV6 Libra...M&K Porsche 550 replica... mmmmm) with enough change for an early S13.
17k might even stretch to a (LHD?) Lotus Carlton <dribble>
Cheers, Phil
I'd go for a completely impractical car for the weekend! :D
A GT40 Kit Car with a small block chevy, the Porsche RSK Spyder kit with a Porsche 911 3.0 Turbo engine, Dax Rush Cosworth etc... ;)
Id blow it all on cheap wine, cheap women and K-tel records :D :D
Prolly put some new boots on the old girl as well :)

£17k, hmmmmm
I'd drop a 2.8i ford V6 in my Dutton- £500
I'd buy back my old 205 GTI- £1200
Nice 88/89 Pontiac Firebird(Black with T-Tops)- £4500
Mint condition '67 VW Westfalia camper- £10000
That gives me about £800 to spend on fixing a bloody 200sx for the rest of the year
