View Full Version : Noise feedback on our new S14 twin silencer exhaust
Ive a customer who fitted a twin box today. hes just come back in his car with it fitted. With no cats (s14a) it exhaust is 82db at tickover and 99db at 4k rpm
And thats with a straight through decat and no bung. Stick in a bung and/or a decat silencer the level will drop a whack.
I dont know how accurate our db meter is so need to get levels on other exahsust to comapre as it doesnt sound as loud as our S14 GT Spec and yet that also measured 99db at Castle Combe with the same static test
However the owner says that the system is quieter than one of our old twin box systems and it sounds very reasonable to me. Far far far quieter than our S13. The customers said that the bung was a waste of time for him as he simply wont use it as the exhaust is at a sensble level already.
Basically, RESULT :D

well just went out in mine and was well happy with it. the loudness is perfect. i love it :D
thax bren
Just picked mine up from CityLink, no bung but I am not going to use it anyway if it's as quiet as you say.
Awesome service from APEX Performance as usual - I only ordered this yesterday at 11am and it was (attempted to be) delivered at 11 today !
Nice one Bren (& Emma & Ann)
I will report back on comparisons to the old single box tomorrow.
Daniel.
EDIT - forgot to say... it is FAPPING GORGEOUS !!!!

not too loud on tick over but lets rip when u....well....let rip, which is what i was wanting.
also love the blips when you lift off!! :D
fitting tomorrow (provided i get the missing gasket in the post...) and kinda can't wait - me back box hasn't been part of my exhuast system since it seperated on xmas day - and at the same time feel like the task of fitting my zorst is beyond my capabilities :(
sure looks sexy just on the floor of my room to be honest :)
Cant wait for monday! Looking forward to spending monday evening under the car, and monday night driving around aimlessly just coz i like the sound :D

i got a garage to fit mine, took him 10mins to fit. Bolted on to the dano decats perfectly. The only problem was that the tailpipe was touching the bumper. The mechanic bent the hanger slightly to give it more leeway.
Noise levels; coming from a standard exhaust and never owned a loud car, this system to me is loudish :ghey: . But having driving it for most of the day im getting use it and beginning to love it :D
Best experience must have been the indoor carpark  very deep note.
on WOT it loud and i do feel the vibration, my gf said it was like a massaging seat.
tomorrow i'll clean my car and take some pics and mpeg so you can hear the noise levels too.
Anyway, i am VERY happy with the system, TOP QUALITY, TOP LOOKS, and TOP VALUE.
P.S Bren, when you get the bungs in, i wouldnt mind having one  in case i have to take my mum somewhere :)
Chris
Getting more tempted by one of these each time I read more about them...
Am very interested in seeing (hearing, actually) the mpegs, can you take some from inside the car starting it up, normal town driving, and at around 70mph on the motorway (cruising and then flooring it).
Fussy aren't I? :wack:

All vids are from inside the cabin.

nice vids chris
doest sound loud at all my metro was 10 times worse, it used to set off car alarms in multistorey car parks
Cheers for those!
Does sound a lot lounder than a Mongoose ...
EDIT: Bren, any idea how what the noise difference would be with one of your sports cats in place? I'm far more likely to get a sports cat when I buy a zorst than I am a decat pipe.

haha...wait till u hear it for real :D it is louder :)
my gf is covering her head when i give it some :wack:
Bear in mind that we do a decat silencer which will reduce the volume and also include a bung with the system which again will reduce the voilume by a significant amount :)
I am actually suprised at how loud this is with the bung in :o
I have no doubt its quiet for a jap stylee, but its so much louder than the standard exaust - and the pops and bangs and flames dont help either!
:D
It rocks!
I will take some photos an some video on the weekend bren for you to use to show your customers (by the time i get home form work its dark, plus i wanna washt he car first!) :D

haha me too.. was expecting something like HKS silent hi power, but im getting use to it.
just spent 2 hrs on the M1. if u maintain certain speed then its not loud, but once u press the gas, its loud. Since i dont do much motorway journeys, its bearable.
hopefully the bung makes a difference on the motorways.
You havent got the bung in at the mo? I put the bung in it when i fitted it :ghey:
Im gonna take the bung off this weekend and see what she really sounds like :D
I do some dual carrigeway driving on the way to and from work, and when your just crusing at 70 its not really noisy, just gotta turn the stereo up. However when you plant the throttle to scare the hell out of the BMW 528 thats tailgaiting you, it goes all raucus and "IM GONNA KILL YOOOOOOO MAAHHAHAHH"
:)

Well, i just took the bung out to see what it sounds like - and apart from sounding considerably louder, it sounds much lower and meaner - the bung seems to give it a kinda drain pipe on a nova type sound, wheras without its more of a god farting sound, which i like!
If only it kept the deep tone, and was a bit quieter, i guess im gonna have to get a decat silencer at some stage, pity as i already have a 3" decat.
Mind you even with the bung out, it doesnt set of car alarms, drove round past a load of parked cars and in streets and not so much as a wee waaaaaaa. So i cant be that loud. Its just loud for me ;) :ghey:

Bren, here are some sound files of the car with no bung. Unfortunatly i think i had the record gain up a bit too much, some of it gets a bit distorty. My bad, you can get a good idea tho.

i took some recordings outside the car. its not loud at all on idle only when accelerating.
Video1 (http://217.206.186.140/sxoc/200sx-apex-twinbox-accel-outside.wmv)
Video2 (http://217.206.186.140/sxoc/200sx-apex-twinbox-accel-outside2.wmv)
make sure you have decent speakers to appreciate the lovely noise :)
I am the customer from the original post taken me this long to post due to computer problems. I am completley happy with the new system pretty quiet at idle a nice burble when cruising and a lovely sweet growl when on full chat sounds so much different to the old twin box much more aggresive loads of pops and bangs when my bov is set loose and a few flames aswell, overall i am very pleased. The fit was superb less than 30 min including jacking car up and tailpipe looks spot on a big  to bren and apex. This is without the bung which i dont feel is neccessary its quiet enough if you drive sensibley and i have no cats in place.

me too, after having it for about 2 weeks, i dont think its too loud at all, just right.
i like the low burble so i dont think i' be using the bung, but will try it for motorways.
Apaprently its loud. well my mum and g/f seem to say - personally i think it sounds sweet as a nut mate :D spot on!
Big thumbs up

I'm more than happy with the sound, and looks and fitment..
100% positive feedback!
I've fitted the bung at the moment due to moaning from the girlfriend, but i prefer it without.
Butus you have PM regarding your sound clips :)

Hey bren, was that with a bung in?
its quiet tbh :)
s14a with the twin cats doesnt sound that loud at all and it wont set off car alarms :(

do any of the cars in the clips have silencers or cats in? I'm seriously tempted by one of these
chrischeung
24-02-2005, 17:16
mine has no cats, just the small centre silencer and the backbox that comes with the exhaust.
bren are the heatshields off the old exhaust meant to go back on?
the ones behind the cat
We have never refitted any heat sheilds
The GT Spec was 99 without bung I believe.
right i shall take recordings with the twin cats in an s14a - its quiet but sounds nice and sporty. I shall try it with the normal down pipe with cat and sports cat  next then with only the sports cat.

bren,
can you get larger centre silencer?
the motorway journeys are a bit loud....
im going to have a metallic cat put in soon, do you know if that would lower the noise?

Yeah, I've yet to hear a car louder than my metro. Annoying on long journeys but fun for the short ones :-)
I want a quieter exhaust for the 200, so this one sounds ideal (excuse the pun).
Bren was the meter measuring in dB, or dB(A)? there is a difference. To do with "percention" of loudness by the human ear.

We can do a decat silencer but thats no use if youre going to replace it wityh a high flow cat. If youve a straight decat now then the high flow cat will quieten the exhaust to a degree
Goddard,
I dont know if its measured in db or db(A).

Goddard,
I dont know if its measured in db or db(A).
dB(A) is corrected. So that if something is really say 50dB at 2kHz, the ear is more sensitive here so an extra 30dB is added on. I can't remember the exact values, it changes across the frequency range.
The meter should be able to flick though a few different settings. If you get the chance, try to get both done in dB(A) as that is best
What exactly does your bung look like? I was thinking of getting one for my current car for long journeys. But I doubt yours will fit into my 2.5-3" tailpipe (can't remember which). Putting my cat back on makes it alot calmer, but looses performance and I'm killing it with the overrun fuel
