BMW question

As I cant find a BMW forum I thought I'd post this here and be prepared for a slagging.
Last night I had a look under the back of my 528. The exhaust looks a bit odd, there appears to be two silencers sitting side by side. One with a tail pipe and one with a sealed end. Whats this all about?
