View Full Version : Are Lexus Soarers better than 200SXs?
Well? Don't know much about the Lexus, but they do look good I think. What motors/power do they have? Are they jammed with gizmos too?

You can get a 2.5l Twin Turbo I believe (Possibly the same engine that went in the MK3 Supra Twin Turbo? )

FFS don't let Iain see this thread. ;)
But that aside I think they are pretty tasty motors. Will kill a std 200, and will kill just about all 200's at top speed.
Kinda similar to Zeds in weight, power and gearing I think.
I thought it had a short stroke Supe MK IV slab?
Not sure about handling though.
Lexus Soarer's use the 1JZ motor as opposed to the Supra's 2JZ-GTE motor. They are fairly similar.
http://web.ukonline.co.uk/soarertt/tuning.htm
A page on 1JZ 2.5 litre tuning.
Nice cars to cruise in for sure, nicely specced as most Lexus' seem to be.
Problem is, you've asked are they 'better' than the 200sx?
Standard either way, they'll be faster, brake better (i would think), not sure about cornering - may have more overall grip but the weight won't make them as quick as a 200 round, say, multiple corners. Would think they would be more expensive to own, maintain etc.
Too late Jezz! (you should really say the Supra is a stroked version of the 2.5, it is lazier as all stroked motors are)
The 'Standard' Soarer TT has only 280hp and is 'throttled' back to achieve that, it is a short stroke straight 6 which shares the same 'design parent' as the Skyline motor ( they both started as the TMC 2.5) it is shorter in stroke than the Skyline and will rev to 8K without protest. just taking out the (3) restrictors in the system and upping the boost from 8½lb to 13lb gives 370hp for about £500 all in, you must fit the 4 pot Supra brakes at this point to stay safe!
My car has these mods and performs thus;
0-100kmh 5.0 secs.
quarter time 12.2/12.3
top speed 173mph, timed, 2 way average.
Nice for an Auto'box
I don't have to turn up the stereo 'til 120+
No Supra under 450hp will touch her on the road.
No Subaru will get near and even the Local Evo-stiks won't play anymore, having blown all into the weeds!
Have driven lots of modded 200SX's none have been close....sorry.
(if you wish to read about my with my encounter with a P reg Bright Yellow Diablo go to the Supra website and find it in spotted/kills, still probably the best kill there) http://www.mkivsupra.net/bbs/

On a related note I read that Lexus can be expensive to service - Lexus are very (obviously) expensive, Toyota wont touch them and independants (who know what they are doing) are hard to find.
One reason I went for a 200 was that the servicing is the same price as a Primera.
If the original question was talking about emptying your wallet then the Soarer is obviously much better ! ;)
You're right, not cheap but still a bucket full of cash cheaper than any of the real competition, my car is as fast as an XKR, Vantage, 3200GT, Cerbera etc. but at a fraction of the purchase price and cheaper to maintain and much more reliable!
We now have a fair number of fettlers and I have no problem with my local Lexus/Toyota dealer and the Manager has actually driven my car and just loves it! He is also asking 'HO' if he can get a set of manuals so as to offer servicing in the area!
My car costs £750 on servicing a year (15000mls) and £300 on tyres!
(As the susp. is electronically adjusted 'on the fly', multiple corners are not a worry the susp stiffens in less than .1sec to oppose weight transfer, the car is actually more agile than its size would suggest)
My mates dad owns a Lexus Soarer, not the TT though. Its a huge motor and well spacey inside.
There a TV mounted in the centre console, so when your not watching TV, you can use it as a touch screen for the air con, radio etc.
It comes with traction control, the suspension is also electronic, so at the push of a buttom you can add / drop a couple of inches.
Apparently JCT600 are very reasonably priced when it comes to servicing
Ive also read on a Soarer web-site some of these cars have been known to clock up over 500,000 miles!
I've just been on the autotrader site, and there are a couple for £4-6k. If they really do 173mph with some mods, then they sound feckin' ace...

I said Mk3 Twin Turbo and DP Motorsport state that it uses JZA70 1JZ-GTE
They are very expensive to insure, about the same as a 355!?!
370hp is £500
Supra brakes £650
450hp another £1500 on all the above
520hp another £1500 on all the above
370hp =173mph
450hp =184mph
520hp =192mph
There are quite a few in Japan, if you get a chance look in the Hyper Rev No.34 tuning book, those speed figures are common-place for these cars, though with 500+hp you should spend another £500 on the Golden Coil springs to drop it and keep it under control.

Nice cars, but well into S14 pipe and slipper territory!!
That 'image' is fine by me!
Thankfully the filf are also stupid enough to believe it and I go my merry way without interuption, where as the 'ooooooh look at me, look at me, I got a loud exhaust/big wing/bodykit/furrydice/maxpower sticker (delete where appropriate) pleeeease Mr Policeman use my driving licence as toilet paper' is pulled all the time!

You didn't sound too happy about having to buy two (2) replacement turbo's though! ;)
What's the fuel economy like? I bet it's not much worse than my 300 miles for £40 :(
I do quite like the Soarer, but it's a bit big for my needs, and the front looks like bit like a Honda CRX - on steroids! Maybe if I had kids I'd consider it :)
Im completely up my own @rse, couldnt be more up there if i tried.

Post more Toyota Soarers are one of my all time favourite cars, ever! From the MZ21 to the JZZ30, im a big fan!
Im into the Soarer mark for various reasons, one being the superb top speed on offer from them, like you said Iain. Its the superb Aero shape and 1JZGTE... So much torque and power! Have you got an exhaust on your Soarer? I cant get enough of the way the Motor sounds, in Soarer's, MarkII's, Chasers etc.
Another reason being the drop dead looks :)
Im also very interested in them, when it comes to using them for drift cars... It intrigues me to watch such a big car drift (nearly 5 meters long, right?) and they look awesome when doing it, plus the superb kits available for them in Japan...
When i can actually afford to insure one (at 20, ive got no hope) i think i would take one over a JZA80 Supra.. Possibly. :)
Tell me more about your car!
Paz
why isn't your soarer got 520bhp if it can be done so cheap? They are good engines though.
Whats the jun 200sx got? 750bhp @ the wheels? 1/4 in under 9sec on street legal tyres? haven't seen a soarer do that yet?
why don't soarer get done up as much as say skylines, supra's? The biggest power one i've seen had about 800bhp. how come they don't race them in the japanese GT? or do they?
I have all the 'gear' for 520hp sitting in my garage including the Golden Coil springs. It will be done.
Pazza, I must not 'try' peoples patience too far, but if you go to the Soarer website (LSOC, in any search engine) you can join and you and I won't upset too many of these good people.
I must admit that my eyes glaze over slightly with all these big numbers, I drive on ordinary UK roads and about 500hp seems to be about as much as is really sane for daily/regular use, even that seems excessive to me, hence the lack of 'eagerness' to go further up from the 370hp I have at present.
The Skyline was a leap forward in 4WD and that is what fired the 'imagination', the Supra had its 'brutish' looks, it looks like an 'Eastend Bruiser' and it therefore was latched upon as a good 'image' for modifiers, the 200 was a cheap, powerful RWD car when for the money FWD was all there was.
do you have 370 @ the wheels or engine power? because they only come with 280 (from the engine). I guess they are about 1500kg which gives you about 246bhp per ton. and you get a 12.2 1/4 very impressed. i've only got about 209bhp per ton, and i can only get a 14.1 just think when you get it to 520 you should be beating motor bike with easy. I may have to get a one.

Nah;) . Probably beat my bike but not a modern big bike.
Is the Soarer the same as an Aristo? They've got one next door to me in Exoticar (Jap Import cars), which looked pretty smart till they smashed up the front end.

12.2 seconds with basically a small boost upgrade is very impressive :)
Seems you have to do a hell of a lot more to get that extra second though.
http://www.amkread.co.jp/Pages/Event01/AllJapan/Photo/39.jpg
This one above has amongst other things, a Trust T88-34D turbo, and apparently, has been converted to 3000cc. It attained a time of 11.368 seconds (11.241 in preliminary rounds).
See it Here (http://www.amkread.co.jp/Pages/Event01/AllJapan/AllJapan_Photo_2WD_B.htm)
i remember this. the mongoose warcry innit.

Paz Do we have to be subjected to all the s**t from these people which is not 200 related or more to the point posted by 200 owners. Do they not have BB's for these cars or is it they just wanna be 200 dreamer owners ???. May I add its amazing what kids can find out about Grand Turismo featured cars on the NET these days. I think an age verification system may be required on the board or even a 200 owner verification system to save good bandwidth
I think that's why it's in the 'non 200sx related chat' section :)
Pazza will get what he needs from the LSOC and not trouble your equanimity further 'J595' or is that 'HAS'?
Yep, 12/12½secs seems to be 'relatively' easy, after that you need to do serious things and spend serious money and that stops it being a 'Lexus' which is defeating the reason for buying it!
There is more to performance than just BHP, RPM/C and BMEP (actual) count for more than half!
This is where I stop posting on this.
Be cool.
Yeah - stay cool! Surely we're all into fast, cool (cheap!) cars. I was just curious about the Lexus and how it compared to my 200SX, since I'd seen a couple of Soarers for super-cheap money.
Like on the telly, if you don't like a programme (or a thread), don't watch/read it.

You spelled Gran Turismo wrong. Also, did you wonder why this section of the Forum is called "NON 200SX related chat"? Im sorry, but what you wrote above is a totally un-provoked attack and there was no need for it.
Basically, this is a perfect case point as to why i dont come on here very often anymore. I wont be coming on here often when i get my RS13 either.

Y'know, I have to agree.
I don't like Iain. I make no bones about that. However this *is* the Non-200SX section, and as I've said many times I will *not* moderate or act upon any thread in this section unless I get overwhelming requests to do so. Talk about whatever you like - as long as it's not actively rude, I don't care.
In this thread Iain has been well-mannered and polite, which is all I ask from him. This is no olive branch - I still feel what he did to the Supra board was unacceptable, but as long as he conducts himself in a reasonable manner on this board I will not hold a grudge against him.
Pazza, I hope you will continue to contribute to the board, and good luck on your search for a 200.

Eheheh.. Andy, ease back on the Vodka! The Hill Climber 86 went back to Ireland, hence me not having it and anyway ive 100% decided on an RS13. After yesterdays "track" day (I wont call it a drift day, cus everyone seems to get all irate about it, but needless to say, i had a great time), im convinced they are a better car. Not understeery at all :) In fact, quite the opposite!
Matt_J, im so sure you'll miss me. I'll miss you too, my friend!
Thank you Keith_C and Dave Refault, much appreciated, but i dont think i'll be staying (or posting at least).
