Hi Jez, going to Stage 3 as soon as I've fitted the injectors and I just wanted to ask a few questions.

I'm running an Apexi AVC-R with a T28 hybrid that runs at 14/15psi base, a K&N air filter (soon to be replaced with an Apexi one), a Pace FMIC and a Walbro pump.

What I would like to know is:

1) What is the lowest and highest boost level that the Stage 3 chip can cope with? I want to set an everyday level and a track-1/4 mile increased level.

2) I got a Blitz exhaust with a custom 3" downpipe, the exhaust people who fitted it suggested that removing the CAT might cause a problem with the ECU and welded a restrictor in, have you ever heard of this problem and does your chip cope with it? Is there any advantage to leaving the restrictor in or is it better to remove it and have a 3” system all though?

3) What should the base timing be? I was running a Norris Designs chip before and the timing was changed to 13°, is this too retarded?

4) I run on normal unleaded for everyday use, is this ok or do I need to change to super?

Thanks in advance
Seth

Hi Seth

Heres some answers:
1) There is no lowest boost really - you can run whatever you like. The max boost pressure I could run was about 1.1-1.2 bar. All depends on your specific engine though

2) Go for the 3" straight through exhaust - the less restrictive the better

3) You will need to get the timing set up so your car doesn't det. It could be anywhere between 13-17 deg.

4) Always use Optimax/SUL

Hope that helps
Cheers :)

and what if you dont use optimax?

If you don't use Optimax the engine is much more likely to detonate at high boost. If the engine is left to detonate for long periods of time things will begin to melt - spark plugs, valves, pistons etc.

hmmmm can you run normal unleaded though but say at 15 psi?

No. If you increase the boost above standard, run SUL or Optimax.

Doesn't the chip adjust the timing? Does this need to be done on a RR?

The ignition timing changes depending on engine load and rpm according to the maps in the chip (standard or otherwise). You just need to set ignition timing with the engine idling.

You don't have to do it on a rolling road, I do mine on the public road.

In most circumstances, if you have the same mods and boost as is listed for the chip and use Optimax fuel, the ignition timing will be fine at 14-15 deg BTDC.

Hi Jez, thanks for the answers. :notworthy

What would be the next step? (Stage 4?)

If you want more that ~320bhp you'll need to start uprating the engine internals. You'll need to run a lower compression ratio, better exhaust manifold, bigger turbo etc. Because there are so many different options theres not an off the shelf chip available.

I can do custom maps though - any injector size up to around 950cc, Z32 AFM etc etc. My car is still on the standard ECU and it's running around 450bhp.
