What is London like to work in?

Bearing in mind I am from the Highlands.:)

Busy, smelly and full of muggers, rapists, terrorists etc. etc. :D :D ;)

That nice huh?:D

I was thinking along the lines of cost/people/accommodation/ etc in South London, may have the opportunity of a job there, but I am not really sold on the idea of living in London.

The cost of living is very high, and don't expect people to be friendly either.

We dont even need to lock our doors here and everyone knows your name;)

A bit like New York then!

Lived there for 4 years in the mid-late eighties. The air stinks, and the water has an almost thick quality. Better be a good job.

Job should be ok, just trying to convince myself to go to London.

I've worked in London for short spells whenever I had run out of excuses. Lets see.

Expensive to rent
Horrible air quality
Expensive to eat
Overcrowded
Expensive to drive
Congested roads
Generally unfriendly people (compared to northeners)
Sh1te public transport
Expensive public transport
this list could go on.....

Unless I have missed something I can not see what would possess anyone to move to London unless you become the P.M.

If you ever want to buy a house, forget it unless you plan on being a stock broker.

Funny you should mention that, currently studying CIP exams for that purpose, still prefer the idea of the US and Canada for my current occupation.

Canda!!! I loved it there. The people are really nice, lots of land, plenty of snowboarding and hiking if you are into that kind of thing :)

Strict speed limits tho...

You ought to go to London for a day...

Enjoy the sights...

Travel on the tube...

Then go home and blow your nose, and see the black filth that you've been breathing all day come pouring out. It's probably like smoking 20 a day... but without wanting to!

My boyfriend lives in London - Camden to be exact and it's not a place that you want to be walking late at night on your own. The first time I ever went down there, I walked out of the station to be confronted by a seething mass of tattoo'd, pierced, mohican'd humanity. Not that that's a bad thing, just that they look scary! :D Until you get to know them. Fortunately, boyfriend was also there waiting for me. :)

Camden itself is a fascinating place to visit. Camden market is interesting and if you know where to go you can avoid the tourist traps. However, it is jolly expensive to live in London. Clym's flat costs £1450 a month for a 2 bedroomed affair. Parking is a nightmare - I could park outside his flat if I wanted to pay £6 for an hour and move it every hour on the hour...which I don't. :D

And there's rubbish EVERYWHERE. London is dirty.

How about this... rent some nice spacious accommodation for a month in south london, then every day make your way to the centre of town at about 8.30am then at about 5.30pm make your way back home. If you don't mind the money you've paid for that month's rent and enjoy the commute then accept the job! ;)

If you don't mind the money you've paid for that month's rent and enjoy the commute through traffic where the drivers have 2 speeds - 100mph and stop. You're either in the way or driving too slowly. You need 14 pairs of eyes to avoid the taxi drivers that change lanes inconsiderately, the van drivers who really do own the road, no honestly, the mopeds that appear from nowhere right next to you, the couriers who truly believe that some deity is on their side and the lost who really don't know what they are doing on the roads in the first place, then accept the job! ;) and look forward to spending 75% of the rest of your life stuck in a traffic jam doing a massive 4 feet an hour.

ahem. massively out of context! you'll be hearing from my solicitor ;)

the commute i was refering to was via the pubic transport service (yes I purposely missed an "l" off). Times however are similar to the ones in bold!
