Evening boys and girls....

I got a problem, i just posted a message in the tech forum (copy at the bottom of here), i dont suppose any u fellow welsh dudes fancy earning some extra Xmas pressies...
I need to find a mechanic or someone who can change over a turbo gasket or a manifold ??? I dont know what to do to be honest, and i've already been quoted nearly £300 to change the turbo gasket and £500 to do the manifold....
I dont have that kind of money, so need to try and buy the parts maybe and pray about the rest ?
Cheers in advance :notworthy

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

3 days ago, my car started making rasberrry style blowing noise coming from the engine when hitting 2000rpm, well, as of today, the rasberry noise is quite loud'ish when driving between 2k rpm and just under 3k rpm (not going over 3k at the mo..)

Went to 2 garages in Cardiff, first chap said the problem is 'Its a cracked manifold', said where the turbo is, gets so hot and cracks the manifold....

2nd place was a independant Nissan specialist, without even looking and listening to what noise i said it makes, he said 'its the turbo gaskets' and then said £££ which made me

To be totally honest, i don't understand what either of those mean (or do, or where they are !), and i dont know how to go about finding out how to get it fixed without being ripped off....

I am gonna post this on the Wales board aswell (hopefully thats allowed !), and i hope someone from Cardiff knows where i can get this problem fixed, this is my only car, my normal everyday car, and me is lost without it !, need to get it fixed a.s.a.p, not even had it 8 months yet :(

If i have to buy either of those things, can any recommend where i get them from ? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.

Chris or Buffy will be able to diagnose the cause of the fault for you mate

I would have thought that it was the tubby gasket though  cracked manifold's are not as common as you would think

Chris might even be able to do it for you !!

Hi dudes
Just found out its the Turbo gasket and elbow? gasket that needs replacing, and some bolts or studs ?

Defo gonna give Chris a call to see what he can do, etc etc
At least its not the manifold i guess...
Anyone else ever had to change the Tubby gaskets ? :smash:

gaskets & banjo washers will cost you around £50. job is less than a day. consider braided oil & water feeds while the turbo will be off if you can afford it. MANY sx owners have done gaskets

lol couldent resist sorry dave

Gasket's are a bugger to change but everyone has to do them at some point.

Might be an idea to do what stoofer has mentioned though as you are in the mood lol

my nissan did the same i just replaced the manifold gasket .then i just cleaned the turbocastings for tight fit and used stainless steele allen bolts , I got tired of replacing the crappy copper gaskets they dont last due to heat.
one bolt shead off in head too.had to spot weld to grip remains [last resort]
just look in some night when car is hot . its nearly molten

I'm waiting to get my turbo to manifold gasket done, luckily a freind is sorting it out for me this weekend other wise I'd be ****ed. It cost me £70 in parts from my local Nissan place if thats any help to you.
Also is this a common fault with the 200? because it seems alot of people on here have had to do the gasket change at least once

Yeah, notorious problem for the 200. Engine Movement,Manifold Design and Cyclic Heating are major detrimental causes for the gasket failure. As soon as one portion of the gasket fails, heat build up just munches through it. When the locking tabs fail, and the nuts move a little, the heat will loosen up these nuts very quickly and its not easy to spot especially on the inside 2 nuts.
Solutions:
-Use OEM Nissan Parts, not rubbish.will last longer
-Invert your Exhaust Manifold so turbo becomes top mounted (don't know the in's and out's, just know its possible) so you can access these gaskets a lot easier.
-Concentrate on Reducing heat soak by heat wrapping manifold and turbine housing, and perhaps downpipe.
-Gentle warmup of this region (especially on these cold days)

It's probably a good idea if you have a day or 2 spare, to get hold of the workshop manual, all the bits, and learn to do this job yourself, as these gaskets will probably go at least twice in the period you own the car. You'll save yourself a lot of money. Its all pretty much bolt off/bolt on, but fairly fiddly and very time consuiming as there are lots of dismantling to do.
To do this job properly, it's essential the manifold is removed from engine.
If you're on the original turbo aswell,, it means you can have the turbo inspected once its off to see how much life is left in it, you can save it if you notice oil seals are on their way out etc... examine shaft play.. and rub it against your cheek.. whatever.

Found its beneficial to change the Exhaust Manifold to Head Gasket, and perhaps if you want to be careful, the Turbo to Elbow Pipe?
The multi layer metal S15 Headgasket is an improvement over the OEM.
Sometimes you can use a little copper spray on the gaskets to give better sealing and better heat absorbtion, its a very sticky copper residue, mostly used with headgaskets.
Oh yeah, care must be used on the manifold studs/bolts as they are easy to shear and will just mess your whole week up, like serious doo-doo.
Definately worth learning how to do it yourself.
Laters Chaps, good luck.

PINBALLERS... HOOOO!
