Diesel turbos are very small and have low boost, and if thats what your looking for then go for it.
My BX 1.7 turbo diesel ran 13-14psi as standard, but that was only required to rev to 4500 though it was still pulling hard when the rev limiter cut in.
It was a KKK K-14 by the way but they also had Garrett T-2's fitted.
If you don't want to rev over 4.5K then a diesel turbo is an option.
On the plus side, you'll have boost from 2K. :)
it`s going on an 8v golf gti lump reving to about 6500rpm too much boost will blow the thing up coz it will still have standard compression ratio:D :D
More modern turbo's from TD's probably wouldn't be suitable as they run a few tricks you can't use on a petrol engine to help keep lag down. I forget these tricks. I can probably find them somewhere. I'll go look now.
At the end of the day a turbo is a turbo, the only tricky bits are inthe actuators and the waste gates.
You tend to find that most diesel turbos have no waste gates as they don't rev very high, hence displacement is low.
We run huge great holset turbos with no waste gate, hence no actuator, but as the engines govern the fuel in such a way that the engines only rev to 2500rpm the over boost is not a problem.
Car diesels do tend to run fairly small turbos, but they spool up very quickly and give nice boost for the bottom end of the rev range, good for quick getaways, and good for diesels as they don't rev high anyway.
Don;t know if this was useful, but I'm pissed and it does make some kind of sense, I think.
Looks like i`m going to be using a Saab 900 turbo(if it`s still at my local breakers!):)
