View Full Version : April's Max Power
Just been to Tescos and couldnt find any decent mags so I bought a copy of MaxShower to read during my lunch break. Simon Norris' Evo is in there doing 188mph through a tunnel on the A1!!! nice :)
Sorry if this has already been said.
Dave
Max Power has gone really downhill in the last few years hasn't it ? It's just full of adverts and cars from abroad. THe only cars from this country seem to have cost a fortune and are not realistic purchases for us. I think the target market also seems to have moved to 13-17 year olds.
They also seem to have become the opposite of what they stood for. They started out reporting on cruises and giving independent advice on products. Now they just a seem like a big company who push their own products. They even sell there own wheels and alarms etc.
Its time for a new lagazine I think. WHat do you think ?
WHat do you all read ? (Car magazine wise).
evo - best motoring mag available.
auto express - weekly dose.
japanese performance - jap-ness.
banzai - " "
:)

The only decent car mags (imho) are Banzai and EVO. I totally agree about Max power and the like...there just full of adverts and seem more of an excuse to show ass and tits (nothing wrong with that-in a mens mag) in order to be able to sell to '13-17' year olds.....as for the cars! Now theres another story:rolleyes:
As for Norris's evo article......Dull Dull Dull. 188mph on the A1?? Surely he wouldn't have been stupid enough to attempt this on the road? After all there are no photos in Max crap to prove it (not that i saw anyway) and why would he risk forty grands worth of motor to prove it!!!!

Very little worth Reading in my view.
Keep an eye on Banzai/JP
but for a real Read - Intersection. Produced by Dazed and Confused.
Chuffin marvellous stuff.
I remember Max Power when it was launched.
A few memorable cars:
Dave Peace's (I know him) Calibra Turbo engine Manta Coupe
A very very Lairy Rover SD1
Cosworths of varying degrees of lunacy
It was a proper mag with good articles about actually MODIFYING cars, not just fittin wheels, 'slammin' it, and all the other sh1te parlance they've coined.
It steadily went downhill and is now just soft porn for school kids and muppets who think that fitting a K&N 57i kit to a Saxo really does liberate another 15bhp.
I remember one 'readers cars' featured 1.6 Saxo which had the aforementioned kit, plus an S/S exhaust, splitfires, and Magnecor Leads. He reckoned he had 187bhp!!!!!!!!!! I though to myself, Honda's type-R dept need to be giving him a call, cos they only managed that out of a VTEC 1.8
If I want to look at birds with no clothes on, I'll go down the local meat market night club and pick one up. Obviously the target audience are either too young, too spotty, or too sad to do this, hence Max Power sells so well.
Its an insult to people's intelligence that its call a car mag - it should be a porn mag, with a couple of motors and a Free-Ads stapled to the back.
Rant Finished.
*Steps off Soap box*
[old git mode] I remember when Fast Car used to be an informative mag that actually had decent techy articles. They even built a Thundersaloon racer at one point. Now I think that they are just trying to catch up with lax bowel's circulation figures.[/old git mode]

What we *really* need is a Street Machine for the Jap car market. SM always seems to have loads of interesting articles, details on how to do things yourself, and quality cars.
I totally agree. I used to read Maxy P all the time but then it just got full of women (no prob there, but I bought a CAR mag). I read EVO / Banzai / Import Tuner (www.importuner.com) (American mag (with birds but at least tunes cars rather than just slams them)). Im fed up of having women naked on every page which makes reading in front of the missus interesting

I usually buy Fast car and occasionally Redline. Fast Car is an Ok mag and they do some qute funny videos once in a while :), and Redline is quite a good read now, as they're starting to concentrate on the cars instead of half the pages being porn! Redlines stand at Donny 2002 was good too: Cossie powered BMW, EG Civic with flippy paint and big bodykit, Tarted up R5 with nice ICE install, Supra with Castrol Stickers all over it (looked like somthing out of Gran Turismo, but in a good way) and a New Civic saloon with racing Decals, all of which were staff cars!!

Nobody reads CCC? (Cars and Car Conversions)
Although that's been going downhill lately.
Used to buy quite a few car mags, but now subscribe to far too many online forums and mailing lists to bother now.
And since I have bought a Palm PDA and found I can donload mails to that, so can read meesages away from the PC, I really am a sad git...
Cheers, Phil

The problem is the diversity I think.... Very difficult to cover doing everything to every model... Not to say impossible though...
PLus LAx has driven the market down coz everyone is chasing the high circ figures
