View Full Version : How Much Does Drifting Cost!?
Hi Guys,
Well... As it says above really! :) I am considering getting in on the scene at the start of next season (March?).
This will be on a laughably small budget but figure that I just HAVE to do it even if it kills me!
Have my eyes on £500 worth of drift machine and was wondering what other costs I need to bear in mind?
Tyres - Have friend in the trade who will hopefully sort me out!
Entrance Fees - No Probs!
Blown Engine - Would be 'game over' but worth the risk!
Is there anything else I should think of? Or any other advice, everything is useful at this stage! :)
Cheers In Advance

Budget for more than you think.:D
You'll always spend more than you think you will because you'll start off with a cheapy car. And you'll be happy and have a nice bank balance.
Then you'll decide you want to keep drifting and get better. Then things like wheels, tyres, suspension, seats, brakes, power, clutches, gearboxes, turbos, engines:eek: get a bit more important and necessary and make you very poor.:D
You'll probably need a helmet for most venues and if you want to drive at Silverstone you'll need a fireproof suit.
As above what Steve said.... And then there is always damage.... I hit a drain cover in the grass at Heyford a couple of weeks back. The damage (none to bodywork) has cost me over £300 (turbo, gaskets, front pipe) and thats with Steve fitting it all for me cos I bought him dinner a few times :wack:
Yep, it makes you skinter than a small child who's had his pocket money stopped :(
But it's fantastic fun, even if you're crap :D
You say entrance fees are no probs, but factor in fuel and food (and if someone is selling something shiney while you're there:)), and it soon adds up
Yeh it definatly all adds up. As Mitch said for a drift day you have to factor in all the other costs, you are probably looking at around £100, maybe more for a drift day all in. All i know is its made me very poor, think i'll need a second job over the winter to save some for next year. :(
Cheers for the feedback lads!
Crash helmet shouldn't be a problem, but fireproof suit!? Don't need it in a hurry but where would I get one?
Also can people share cars? Would the car be the entrant or would it be the driver? If it goes well then I would be hoping to share the car (and expenses! ;) ) with a mate. Is that possible?
Also if it's £100 a pop then I would be happier than Michael Jackson when he thought Boys 2 Men was a delivery service!! :D :D
and thats with Steve fitting it all for me cos I bought him dinner a few times :wack:
Yeah, its a shame it didnt work out for you two :ghey: ;)
my car breaks its self as soon as i mention taking it drifting!
Yeah, its a shame it didnt work out for you two :ghey: ;)
:snigger:
So... can I enter the car twice for 2 drivers?
So... can I enter the car twice for 2 drivers? :confused:If you mean enter at Silverstone, I believe you can but you have to pay seperately for each driver. Sharing a car will cut the number of practice runs you get in half.
Wouldn't mind paying twice as it's only fair if there are 2 drivers...
But only if each driver got equal time!?! for example my mate and I should each get the same amount of time as you would!
But only if each driver got equal time!?! :confused:Well you'd get equal time compared to each other, but half the time of everyone else unless you start cutting in the queue.
£10 named driver (on ATrull's car)
£100 set of spare 'drift bitch' wheels
£ 30 getting tyres swapped on rims, balanced etc etc
blowing clutch after about 10 mins of fun on your first drift day?
well £135 for a clutch and £43 for the AA lift home... plus the envy *cough* and respect *cough* of all your fellow board members? priceless ;)
Ahh I think I get it! Do you do the corners, park at the other side and then wait for everyone to finish and then turn round (in turn) and do it the other way around?
Hence the car gets the turns and not the drivers?
P.S. Stidi: :notworthy :notworthy
just another excuse to uprate ;)
anything you break on a drift day (with the exception of stacking it somewhere) probably would have happened eventually during hard driving, but it's safer to test everything on a track, where there's loads of runoff, that's the way I see it anyway :D
clutch stinks something rotten...
edit - oooh nearly 400 posts :D
Ahh I think I get it! Do you do the corners, park at the other side and then wait for everyone to finish and then turn round (in turn) and do it the other way around? The circuit is basically one big circle which everyone takes turns going around. So the the car queues and not the drivers. On practice days extra drivers a like £20/£30 quid. I'd suspect at D1 you'd have to pay 2x £75 for both drivers to enter the competition.

If I was you I would spend some time downloading videos, reading posts etc on here and www.driftworks.co.uk.
the cheap approach is tesco carpark late in the wet.
until you get spotted by mr plod.
then it gets very expensive.
see note from chairman at top of drift section
at the other end of the scale is silverstone, full comp where for £100 on the day, you get three or four practice runs, and if you are crap one competition run.
but you keep your licence.
silverstone car park would be good, if only the insurance could be sorted.
and don't forget the cost of the little stickers, to show if your in nighspirits gang, driftworks gang, D:mon gang etc.... ;)
the cheap approach is tesco carpark late in the wet.I serisouly dont recommend this. Isn't there someone on the driftworks forum who got bannded for a year and a £2000 fine for just doing a handbrake turn in a carpark?

I agree. Also drifting should be done at approved venues and not on public roads otherwise all our attempts to raise the profile of the sport will go to waste.
Also where are people getting their decals made? I need some nice largish ones made up for D1 next year...

which is why i said about mr plod, and mentioned the chairmans comment
which is why i said about mr plod, and mentioned the chairmans commentYeah, just thought I'd back up what you said. I was under the impression you'd get a warning or something if caught in a carpark not a years ban
depends what you are doing and in which car park.
in a car park near hwh lots of things worse than dunkin donuts take place, so i have been reliably informed by a number of members
the police just video it, for their christmas party.
but silliness on any piece of tarmac the public have access tois very very naughty.

Going to take your advice, Cheers
Although I have missed out on the drift bitch I was after, I have definitely caught the bug and definitely wasnt to get started ASAP!
Thanks again for the advice, and I will keep you posted how the hunt is going! :wack:

I like this guy! gives me hope...!
Had a thought what Ive spent on the car through "incidents"...
First time out the clutch died.
Then a month or so later the gearbox seals went (top boot and rear seal)
Then I hit a tyre wall (no damage, cos I had zip tied the bumper on already and it just fell off rather than mash the car up - but thought Id say so)
Then last month at Heyford I hit a 3" high drain hidden in the grass...
Total (including labour where I had to pay it) is about £700 :(.
