Did anybody watch Driven on C4?

Not laughed so much for a long time...

They gave two teams 2big ones to buy and build a motor. The teams were from Lax Bowels and Lotus. Lax power won!!!! Could not believe it.

The Sierra was CLEARLY the better car.

Was in stitches when the Lotus boys had finished, fired it up, and so forth, and the Max lads were busy fitting their induction kit.

The Cavalier looked crap too, the Sierra in LMS decals was BY FAR the more desirable.

Did you see how pissed off the Lotus boys looked when they said sorry you're the losers!!! LOL!

For 2 grand you could have annihilated all three with an S13 and still had enough left to get seriously wasted afterwards!

I didn't see this - anyone got any piccies, I fancy a laugh!

What exactly was the challenge? To race a 2 grand car? Where was the MkIII Supe? :D

Given two grand, get a car from an auction + spend the rest making it quicker. Benchmark car was a new Civic Type R, Max power got a Cav SRI, Lotus got a Sierra XR4x4.

Max power fitted a high lift cam (and found a broken engine mount), a dodgy looking spoiler and some uprated suspension bits. Some alloy wheels + tyres too. They stripped it down a bit too it seemed. It took them all the time they had (2 days) to get it up and running as it wouldn't start for a while.

Lotus left the engine alone, and stripped like 50% of the car. Looks like they knocked 200 kg off the weight, although that was indicated and wasn't measured I don't think. They also fitted a spoiler and some rather grippy looking tyres, and alloy wheels. Induction kit and an exhaust system went on to help it breathe better.

First test: Desirability
2 to 1 in favour of the Vauxhall.. No idea why, it was white and ick, the Sierra was black and half decent looking.

Second test: quarter mile
Both cars lost to the Civic Type R - woman driver (who was she, was she a professional driver??) missed a gear (!) so the sierra almost beat it - great start from the sierra by the way :) Civic Type R 1st, Sierra 2nd, Cav 3rd. No times given.

Third test: Race
Civic was a 'benchmark' car - in other words the woman stayed well behind the other two. Cavalier eventually won, but not before the sierra rammed it a bit and knocked it's bumper off. Max power were happy with themselves and got to keep the car. Lotus seemed to wonder why they bothered appearing on the program.

-----
Other stuff:
The lambourghini got driven by someone, forget who, for a bit. They said it was heavy and understeered going into a corner under power but it was a lambo and stuff so it would 'appeal to lambo lovers'.

tHat's about it.

Lax got a lucky start from the line, just cutting in from of the Sierra. If they had been in opposite positions, Lotus would have won.

And wasn't the woman Penny Mallory?

They should have gone for something with a tubby - Like an R5GT and a bleed valve!

I don't understand why either of them chose such heavy heavy cars!!! For the amount they paid they could have got something a lot lighter and as stated above, probably something Turboable!

The race was pretty unfair too, wasn't the Cavalier being driven by BTCC champion Jason Plato?!

The other motor was driven by Kelvin Burt (also a touring car driver). piccys:

Mr Plato - wasn't he the one kicked of VX's team after he won the champoinship for them?

Cavalier 8v SRi heavy??????

Do me a favour!!!

Mrs. Dunk has one (a saloon) and if I had 2k to spend then I'd have made the same decision - although probably for different reasons for the lax mower boys:

The 8v SRi came with a factory close ratio box
The 8v engine weighs about the same as a fag packet
They weigh about 1100kgs standard - lax bowels probably got theirs down to about 950kgs
With a reasonable suspension kit they almost handle OK
Very cheap to tune.

Personally, I'd have spent £400 on the motor, then spent another £750 on a supercharger to get it up to the 190bhp mark!!!!

Did anyone see that new Bentley Turbo being driven at speed around large objects placed in the road? Feck me a mistake would have been expensive!!!! He (Jason Plato) also appeared to be drifting in it at one point!

His voice went somewhat higher than a church choir through that man-made chicane bit :)

I think he was expecting it to grip a little better ;)

Are you serious? A supercharger for £750? Is that fitted? I could go for that... :D

The Kerb weight of a Mk3 Cav SRi is 1260Kg, according to my sources :p That is nearly 100Kg more than an SX, before anyone gets in it.

I've got one for the other halfs car (Cavalier 8v SRi) - just got to get the pulleys made up and find a suitable bracket. Got it from Racecarparts.com secondhand for 700. Weeny little Rootes blower

Plumbing will probably come courtesy of a Cavalier Turbo, as will the injectors and FPR.

Without intercooling (superchargers don't generate anywhere near the heat of a turbo) 7psi will shove it from 130ish standard to 180bhp odd.

It'll probably blow up two weeks later.

Thats a point - the hatchback Max Prats used is heavier than the Saloon, which is what I was thinkin.

Well I've got an 8v SRi too. I'd be tempted to do something like that... Could you keep me posted as to how it's going please?

Sure - Just need to convince her that she really does need forced induction on her motor!

http://www.abautos.com.au/specs/s13.html

I have seen a few others as well, all of which put the SX at between 1160kg and 1230kg dependant on refinement levels, hicas etc. The basic CA18DET S13 with no aircon or leather etc is 1160kg.

of course, just cos it's written doesn't make it gospel!

It won't be a problem.

Last car I bought her was a Carlton GSi3000

Her comment after a week of driving was this:

"Well it goes ok - I got 130 out of it on the bypass this morning. Not as easy to slide as the Nissan though is it? Oh, and have you tried parking the bloody thing in Waitrose car park - it was like trying to dock the Ark Royal."

!!! Women eh?

Wow, bet that was a bit thirsty!? I'd like a supercharger that you could switch on when you wanted to give it some, but I don't know if that would be possible / cost effective? I like the idea of driving normally, and then when someone thinks they're going to blow away an old Cavalier, I flick the switch and in kicks the supercharger and away we go. :D :D :D :D

Spooky

Maybe, but because a supercharger is belt driven, then maybe it would afford you the ability to turn it off? I honestly don't know! It'd be cool though if you could, because you could have the 'charger off and get your usual fuel consumption / not stress the engine too much, and then turn it on and give it some.

Most modern blowers use a clutch mechanism. Be it viscous or electrical.

The one I've got has an electrical clutch (only the smaller blowers have this I think)

Auto switching using gearbox sensors from a Calibra Turbo to disengage the blower in reverse and first.
