View Full Version : Letter from Inland Revenue...
...saying that I haven't done my self assessment tax returns for the last 3 years and I owe them more than £1400 & they're going to send the baliffs round
I didn't even know I had to do the self assessment thing
Gave 'em a ring & the man in the office was very helpful & is going to send out the last 3 years forms so I can fill them in, & hopefully my tax records will all be kosher and I won't have to pay the fine....keep your fingers crossed for me please! :(
dont need to worry about it, its just a stad letter they send out when they find a taxpayers records are not up to srtach. If you are an employee and receive little or no benefits, chances are that you will owe them nothing at all
On the other hand, if you are self employed, then you need to get cracking with your accounts for the last three years or so. If they show profits, not only will you have to pay over the taxes, but sadly there will be penalties & interest as well
good luck

Thanks mate  Might take you up on your offer if it starts looking like it's gonna come to that. Will give it a few days to get things sorted....and will make sure in the meantime that I don't let any strangers over the threshold !!
Helps to hear it's a form letter (thanks CA18DAT) - I was in a bit of a panic when I opened it because generally I'm a law-abiding little thing and also, needless to say, I don't have that sort of money lying around :(
(Shame you can't choose what the baliffs take away! Could have saved me a trip to the tip :wack: )

Higher rate tax payers, and people with complicated tax affairs, if I understand correctly. From their website:
Self Assessment applies to:
self employed people including business partners
company directors
other people with more complicated tax affairs including people who pay
higher rate tax
pensioners with more complex tax affairs
people who received rent or other income from land and property in the UK
trustees and personal representatives
trustees of approved self-administered pension schemes
non-resident company landlords

Dont suppose I'll need to then, I dont earn enough :indiff: I'll check out the website anyway. Thanx

Me too :( I always assumed it was dealt with by... er... my employers, who pay me.
That's what I'd always assumed as well. Apparently, the self-assessment is to catch up with all the thousands of pounds of undeclared income you get from renting your flat in Belgravia, your million-pound savings account etc
They assess the tax you've paid on your savings lol - guess I must owe them at least £3.22 from that :D
They SAY they sent me the forms..I never received them :( Prolly best to check, if you have any doubts.
Hi ...
LOL Hello Barry  :D
Didn't realise it was you....suffolk's just pointed out to me that you had a name change :) Nice to hear from you, and glad you can help :D
Is it Barry or Mrs C that's a baliff? :)
If I were a baliff, I'd give my wife's phone no out as well ;)
I'm guessing that Barry is the b :censored: ff, but could be wrong :)

Hi Tac
You are indeed wrong its MRS C who is the Bailiff
Barry
I had to do Self Assessment for last year... I had ben paying loads of tax the last few years - Company feck up made it so that I owed them for a company car which Id already had two years. So this year I did the self assessment after the various changes in my tax code (I even had a MINUS Tax Code at one point - meaning I OWED them money even BEFORE Id earnt a penny!!!)
I had hope that Id get a nice rebate. But, as always, I was wrong. I owe them another £230 odd :(
Basts....... :(
I got a letter mid-February saying I owed £421.50 in back tax and interest would accrue if I didn't pay it by Jan 31st!
I rang up and queried the fact that I had only just got it and was told that was irrelevant.
I wouldn't mind so much but the previous year I rang the Tax Office up out of the blue and told them EVERYTHING (company car stuff etc.) because I would rather pay tax than get stiffed for a lump sum out of the blue - and STILL I got boned for extra.
My accountant does mine :) So much for SELF assesment :)
The witchcraft and trickery he performs is worth it ;)
