View Full Version : Bloody speed camera (your thoughts)

I'm a bit worried/angry here. I was in a hire car (brand new Vectra) in Portsmouth and I noticed the speed limit go to 40mph, so I accelerated up to about 42 (well the speedo said that), lifted off and set the cruise control to hold it (was 40mph for a fair stretch and I knew there was cameras on the road).
To my horror the a camera immediately flashed me (I was still decelerating from 42). Maybe it picked up the bump of the cruise-control?

It was one of the new radar-ones 'Truvelo's? (three close stripes on the road).

Am I in trouble? I thought they were set at 46mph and I was nowhere near that :( .

Thing is, I'd made an effort to stick to speed limits for the entire duration of my work trip :( - I'd heard there were more camera's down South, and that seemed to be proven by the M25 alone (one on every bloody bridge - hope they give more than a 2mph tolerance  )

John,

No point worrying until you get a NIP mate. If you do give me a shout and we can come to some sort of agreement over legal aid vs turbo gasket fitting ;)

If a NIP is on it's way, then it'll take an age as it's got to go via the hire-car firm first. Do you think they'll send one, or can they flash as a warning sometimes?

If you're at the Barbecue tomorrow we can chat about the gaskets :) .

There is no specified threshold, it varies from area to area, although limit +10% + 2mph is the common one.

So much for standard UK Laws huh?

If the hire firm get a NIP they will nominate the driver at the time, they will then get a NIP etc.

If you get one DO NOTHING until you speak to me ;)

See you tomorrow :)

I'll hex the speed camera for you John, I'll send it bad vibes and hopefully it should magically blow up and no letter will ever arrive at your door :D

If it has got you, cover it in chocolate spread. I'll eat it for you. Weight Watchers is killing me.

Even if it did - if what you've told us is true they can't do you surely?

Surely the speedo in the car won't be 100% accurate? Mine is around 7% high which means I'd be doing 39 when it indicates 42, a 4% error would be 40 spot on.

even if flashed by a Gatso (you wouldn't see a Truvelo flash) you have a 9out of10 chance of getting away with it, even if you were speeding because most boxes have a flash but no camera (except Northampton area).

Apparently you can see Truvelos flash red (not seen one myself). Are they digital or film?

I believe they're digital, and if you can see the flash, it will be red because they flash in infra red light (into your face). You'd need to be a vampire though.

Have you ever seen John's reflection? :wack:

Have you ever seen John's reflection? :wack:

:D :p

It definitely had a bright white flash and it was not a GATSO (almost 100% sure it was a Truvelo). It had 3 parallel lines on the road (about 5cm apart) where it flashed and there were 2 circular lenses on it. It was dark blue with an orange face.

Just what you need, a bright flash 10 metres from your face when driving on a dark road  .

Someone that looked like Mr Bennett was outside in daylight at Billing AND Apex2.

certainly sounds like a truvelo box. Flash should not happen though

Truvelo's are usually blue and as said get you face on so it should be easy to tell if it is one. Sounds like it to me

As for the flash, well right again you don't (or should not) get any noticable flash from them.

Sounds like a good one to use the PACE arguement, I'd like to see someone from Portsmouth come and read you your rights prior to signing a confession (oops sorry I meant NIP honest  ).

Surely they must flash to get a picture of the car registration in the dark?

Infra red

Oh yeah, forgot that lets cameras work in the dark.

I'm 100% sure it let out a bright white flash in my face though  .

Interestingly I got flashed twice in Portsmouth. The other time I did a U-turn in front of a bus-stop of teenage girls. As I was concentrating on the road I didn't see quite what they revealed, but they were pulling their underwear back up when I looked in the rear-view mirror :D :D :D
