View Full Version : Where are all these massive files?
Playing on my laptop earlier, I found I had only 1.5GB free on a 40GB HD, but couldn't find what was clogging the space up.
I had tried copying a few DVDs last week so thought it may be temp files for that, but couldn't find anything on Nero.
I did a disk cleanup and system restore, which freed up 5 GB, then another restore from a couple of weeks ago and now I have 9.
How do I go about finding and removing the rest?
Cheers for any help.
Easiest way to find out, if you don't have any disk mapping software is to run a search and choose files larger than 10MB for instance, then have a scroll through and see whats there :)

Cheers Dave, I'll give it a go

Get Treesize (http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml) and do a full search on C:, it'll show each folder and content by size.
Very good free app
It'll be your temporary internet files, this place EATS disc space!!!!

It certainly does
Treesize link won't initiate the download for some reason. The readme text works, but that's it. Any ideas?

Picked up all sorts of viruses on my desktop today, top computer day for me
Tried Stinger but it didn't get rid, and now mine goes to some porn site whenever I open Internet Explorer. (And I don't even use the net for porn anymore!!)
Try Spybot search & destroy and Ad-ware
have you checked what programs are installed?
go to settings folder, and add/remove prgrams.
then scroll through and see the size of each prog.
UT2004 on my system is just over 5.5gb in size!!
then i have all the other software etc
ive used up about 40gb of space just with the programs i use.

while your at it install SpywareBlaster and stop the spyware installing in the first place!
Block active x exploits etc
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Will do that too!!
Cheers.
Now that is sorted, while I'm on the net, every few pages I get the "this page cannot be displayed" page up. It is really annoying because if I'm on a forum page and just typed a load, it dumps it and I can't get it back. I have started copying and pasting in case it drops out when I've submitted a message, but it's not a solution. It also disconnects and reconnects MSN all the time.
If I disconnect and reconnect to the net, it works again for a while. I'm on Pipex, BTW but have had no problems with it before.
Also (I'm nearly done!), my computer is running really slowly. I've ditched all my temp files, but am not sure what else I can do to speed it up. I had a message about virtual memory, but can't remember what it was:D
Any help would be appreciated
