When the three-lane, 411-metre tunnel opened in 1988, it had a 50mph speed limit. This was later lowered to 40mph amid fears of the consequences of a head-on collision.
During the recent 18-month £8.2 million refurbishment project, the speed limit was lowered again to 30mph, and this was made permanent on June 26 this year.

Despite having installed the new cameras and looking to bring them into full-time use, the Highways Agency maintains it is reluctant to incur the wrath of motorists by recommending speed cameras at a spot where there has never been a major accident.
