Bacteria on a pin. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of bacteria (orange) on the tip of a pin. Although considered sharp and smooth on a human scale, it can be seen that the surface of the pin is rough and the tip is blunt on the scale of a bacterium. Magnification: x1600 when printed 10cm high. In terms of microns (thousandths of a millimetre), the tip of the pin is some 30 microns across, and the bacteria are about 5 microns long.

Cheese mite. Cheese mites are usually found in cheese, but can also live in corn and flour. For many cheeses the presence of mites is undesirable, but in some cheeses they are used to produce a required flavour. These cheeses are considered ripe when covered in a grey powder of living and dead mites and mite skin and faeces. Cheese mites reproduce rapidly, with a life cycle of only 18 days. They can cause dermatitis (skin inflammation) in cheese workers. Mites are usually less than 0.5 millimetres long.

Tongue bacteria. bacteria on the surface of a human tongue. Large numbers of bacteria can form a visible layer on the surface of the tongue. The mouth contains a large number of bacteria, most of which are harmless or even beneficial. However, some bacteria can cause throat infections or cause the formation of plaque deposits on the teeth, which may lead to decay. Magnification: x10,000 at 10cm wide.
