very well done to Steve for the Clubman Class win, and Julian for the Proffesional class win, some very nice driving out there today .. I span out again :wack:
Was really good, still some way to go to be on par with the japs but maybe soon you guys can give em a bloody good challenge.
Where was mr. nomura though thought he was making an appearance?
Well done to all competitors and congratulations to the winners. :notworthy Great day out :D
Once again a wicked day!
Congrats to all the had a go :D
Nice meeting more people during the day and at the pub again  Glad you got your car sorted Phil :)
twas an awsome day, big respect to those guys who can do that. i wanna have a go :)
that chap in the scoob was rather amusing. what was he doingto spin on every single corner?
i think this is a vid of mr carter's winning run. tbh i'm not sure as its rather small and hard to see.....
crap...my computer is taking ages to upload it and i'm off out now so i'll try again later if no one puts one up.
congratulations
it was a fantastic day, first time ive managed to get along to see people in action and man was it worth the aggro :D some very talented guys out there, im thinking i might not wait til january to buy a 200 now....
Hey base-1,
Saw your car and kates etc, said hello breifly but had to buy and sell some stuff :D
hi matey, thought it was about time i posted on here, registered bloody ages ago lol
was i there when you said hi? if so i didnt realise, bloody knackered today, although i think i saw your car, i might have to get you to gimme a hand if i can afford one soon ;)
great day - but, Option, if you want to present a 'professional' image you cant just let a car through to the next round on a whim. if 6 cars could get through, it has to be on merit, its what we paid to enter isnt it? </rant off>
:D
I think you turned up just after I said hi to the others, trying to introduce yourself to a group of strangers is weird haha.
My car was in the SXOC car park :D
What you looking for s13 or 14?

OPT doesnt judge the competition we hire professional judges to do that and what they say goes. Not down to us.
Anyway, well done to you all and I thought the turn out and standard of the show cars was brilliant! Big well done to Steve- very impressive!

drift bitch...bless you, you came out of i think either the blue or green s14a of one of the option lads car with a huge grin on your face...id have been terrified!lolol
did think it was a bit gay letting the lotus through just cos of the type of car but hey thats life.
steve carter you are a god, next pub meet or something that we cross paths again ill have to buy you a pint.
Phil you car looks even better in the flesh, shame about you spinning as you were aesome in practice!!
wot ever happend to the nsx rides?

This was let through because it entertained the crowd by being shit and spinning a lot, I'm supprised the scooby that span twice at every corner wasn't allowed through as well

17-07-2004, 23:17
TBH...scooby was funnier...u knew he was going to spin before he even started!!
it was the person that took out the polystyrene sighn that was highlight of the day...cant remember but wasnt it an s14 that did the damage to that??
Twas this one.. It was quality destruction 2 bollards, along the grass and into the polystyrene sign all in one run :notworthy

will have to check the undercarrage of every s14 at billing for polystyrene!!
that was funny...propally propallt anhilated all of the scenery in sight...whoever it was you are a god.
feel sorry for that poor daihatso thingy that broke at end of its run!!
Even I scored more points than the Lotus:wack:

oh damm...didnt realise you were competing matty!
why did option get moody with burnouts/doughnuts etc? guessing due to health n safety etc!
thought all the 200s put on a good display...was especially impressed with steve and black s13 with kouki lights and apex zaust!...oh and the regulars such as phill and others.

What a top day!!! :smash:
I lost my Silverstone Cherry, and was delighted to make the top 5 of the clubman comp (who said midships can't be drifted??)
I really need to get an LSD!!!
Nice one Steve and Julian! Top stiff
Unlucky Astonman, thought that the final 3 were very closely matched!
IMHO something does need to be done about the judging though. That sort of inconsistency isn't good for a sport that want's to portray a professional image.
Non and the Lotus shouldn't have been put through. Though I guess it was more entertainment for the crowds.
The reason burnouts etc were frowned upon was down to the fact that the grandstand belongs to the old boys of Silverstone, and is lent to Option for the day. Option don't want them to get the wrong idea about drifting.
If anyone filmed me out on track I'd really like a copy! :Plug:
right, i think this has done it...
let us know if it doesn't work as i haven't tested it :wack: because my computer is slow and sucks bottom.
edit - it didn't work

thats fair enough i suppose although they seemed bit harsh on the guys that did it, especially guy that did the doughnut!
ermm...am i write in saying that kiki did a dougnut there at round 2 or am i wrong(wasnt there just thought i saw a pic)
TBH...thought you done well in the mr2 mate, know there very hard to drift, dont know about point about the elise as i thought he did ok...bear in mind there not meant to drift at all!

AS for Kiki at the last round, I've no idea, I wasn't there. I was a Silverstone virgin until today

18-07-2004, 00:20
Im probally completly wrong bout kiki...just remember c-ing pic of kiki doughnutting in the nsx...cant remember if its near the paddok or elsewhere!!
think elise did deserve to go through, unfortunatly non had a bad day..prob didnt deserve to go through!
did non mess up all the drift displays that option put on during the break??
sidewaysrob
18-07-2004, 00:27
No, Non and Brett were spot on in the displays. It was one of the dark blue S14's that kept spinning, not sure which though.
Both Non and Brett understeered into Priory (the first bend), they drifted everything else all linked but lost out on too many points to go through. However, Non got through because Phil Bennett thought that he was "unlucky" (I know this cos I was standing 2 feet from him when he said it!). FFS, this kind of judging MUST stop if Option wants a professional image. It confuses the spectators, and leave question marks in the drivers minds.
I believe that the R32 Skyline spun in the clubman round when it was down to the 5 of us, however he went through to the final 3 and me and that other BMW didn't. This is the sort of thing that shouldn't happen. Don't get me wrong, I'm delighted I got as far as I did, and my second run was no where near as good as my first. But the judging had no consistency, it's like watching a football referee!
sammysideways
18-07-2004, 00:34
aghh thats right it was the green s14a i think that kept spinning!
agree with the judging...should be a set of rules that should be stuck to, skyline definatly did spin yet still got more points than some of the runs where oversteer was achieved but didnt spin.
understand must be hard but should stay consistant.
But this shouldnt take away what an awesome day it was, the competitors amazing skill(minus the subaru driver, sorry!) and steves amazing victory.

18-07-2004, 00:40
Yeah right, like I said, I don't want it to seem like I had a shit day. I still have a stupidly huge grin on my face that's starting to hurt. I'm over the moon about getting into the final 5, and I accept the judges decision. From the final 3 that ran I saw how good the R32 was around the corners, faster than I was & with bigger angles, so I guess he scored better on the corners where he didn't spin!
Steve did a fantastic job and did deserve to win the clubman, though the R32 and Astonman were also very good!
The scooby had me running to the toilets to avoid a nasty accident. Talk about un-coordinated!! I've seldom seen someone do everything so wrong so well!
sammysideways
18-07-2004, 00:45
poor scooby...got about 3 meters before apex then hit handbreak and was spinning well before bend let alone apex, near end he was actually getting better...still spun though!!
got give him ten for effort...think id have gone home after first 2 practice drifts though if i was him.
seemed like to me judges were looking more for plumes of smoke rather than technique as such.
upset me that the black skyline span in the clubman but was still awarded high points, whilst in final of the advanced the s13 span and was penalised for it!!
i know there 2 different classes but surely judging should be consistant for both??

The practices were good to watch, but that was nothing compared to the excitement and reaction of the croud when the competition started in the afternoon. :D
I admire all the people who took part as they made the day and it must take guts to do somthing like that for the 1st time in front of a stadium of people.

had a wicked day and managed to keep clean until steve asked me to change his wheels for him as he's done about 20 wheel changes already and was stressing about it :D
was a bit confused at the scoring again - dunno how a car that goes through the gravel can get more points than a car that understeers a bit on the first corner, but luckily it didn't effect the end result.
Glad there was some different drivers at the top of the tree this time round, was well pleased for Julian, but gutted for Will as he'd done so well all day long.
still think you get honorary points for having an option sticker on your car though cos Bretts 86 point run was shit and phils 77 point run was much better, Brett was slapping about all over the place and phill was well smooth even though he straightened out a bit on the last bend
yup,i was confused by some of the judging,so were most of the people i was stood with
it was an awesome day though, nice 1 steve
ive convinced myself ive gotta have a go now, will hopefully be at the sept practice :-)

Poor Mr Scooby, he needs some lessons, 24mph into the first corner!!!!! your havin a laugh, ok we did..... but if he's enthusiastic enough to have a go he'll be back after some practice.
I could'nt get my tryes sorted & I was getting cronic roll oversteer which is not not what you want. Anyway I thoroughly enjoyes the day & can't wait till the next one.
OPT doesnt judge the competition we hire professional judges to do that and what they say goes. Not down to us.
The judges should be applying a scoring and elimination system as laid down before the competition starts. 'professional judges' should be professional and not shove through a car that got 6 points just because they feel like it - completely unprofessional.
also the extra points for entering the 1st corner fastest is a silly idea if the run up to the 1st corner is to stay so short, it's not a drag race :wack: I couldnt get my car up there any faster even if I wanted to
can you ask 'that' judge if I pedal a go-cart round wearing a clown outfit with a squeezy-horn next competition if that will be funny enough to get me to the next round?

18-07-2004, 14:43
Don't forget the speed element was just for fun & add a bit interest for the crowds. We could'nt use it for judging as not every car was clockable at the same point. Especially those pesky black 200sx's with no number plates ;) It was quite fun seeing the differences, but in reality the corner speeds were all fairly similar once drifting.
That lotus got through simply for some entertainment, he was so bad it had to worth seeing again, the crowd loved it & so did everyone else I think, it was fairly obvious to everyone it was just a fun entry on request of Phill Bennet who was judging, he certainly did'nt get through on merit!.
I do think though that a spin should never score higher than a non spin.
when did they say that speed into the first corner wasnt going to get extra points? they said it would in the briefing and I never heard any different. (tho there is zero PA in the pit lane so drivers rarely know whats going on) ;)

well, it was exactly this sort of 'judging' that wrecked the autocar sideways challenge last year, too. If you were 'mr famous driver' you got more points or wildcard entries into the next round despite being hopeless. it's just silly, it confuses the crowd and the drivers.

Not really stoof I was in the crowd and they boo'd him lol.
The judges only intention was to let him be a loon and spin and entertain the crowd. They just don't understand that we want the doghnuts in front of the grandstand and not some upside down boat lookin pants :D

True, he wasn't shit, but, it seems strange that his highest scoring run, was also his worst. He shouldn't have been in the final, but, then again, he has got Option all over his car.....

Just in case anyone else is confused about this, it wasn't me that was given a let into the second round. I just missed the first cut by a place or two, and didn't run in the second - completely fair judging for my run.
The car that was sent into the second round on a whim was the bizzare Lotus Elite shelled thing with the roof cut off. About the only thing it had in common with Lotus anyway was the remains of the body. The chassis was custom scratch-built, and the engine was a 6 litre vee lump. To be fair, the driver had never drifted before and had only made it to one practice run in the morning.

cmu...u did really well mate, got a few really good drifts off throughout the day!!
was guna be cheeky and mob you for a passenger ride!!lol
As for the day itself, what a laugh! Top marks to the winners, but my two drivers of the day have to be Rob in his MR2 (amazing first competitive run in a very difficult car), and Ben (AstonMan) in his BMW 525. How you can drift that well with the suspension doing its level best to throw the car upside down, I don't know.
My own run went as well as I could have hoped for. Struggled through Luffield with too little power, and couldn't drift far enough to make any kind of transition between the three corners.
If anyone has video of the event that they can't host, PM me and I'll see what I can do. I have a fair bit of space on my quick host. I can also capture VHS to computer formats if anyone needs that.
If anyone has video of any of my runs, I'd especially like to see them :)

Thanks for that comment, I was over the moon as i've said before.
I nearly got Brooklands and Luffield linked, just need to carry more speed into Brooklands. As for Priory into Brooklands, I never got Priory down well enough to even consider it.
As for your offer of VHS to pc formats, I have around 3 hours of video from the last year that I would love on cd or something. But that might be taking the mike a bit.
I filmed about 70% of the practice and 95% of the comp runs from the pit lane wall on a tripod, so if any drivers wants anything, let me know I'll see what I can do.
It was a top day, I really enjoyed myself and am now itching to try it out myself :D
Kudos to all the drivers, especially the mentalist in the Toyota Starlet Turbo (who blew his engine), the S14 who took out every sign going, the mid engined and 4wd-ers, and the Gumball Lotus driver... I know he was pretty crap, but to be fair, he'd been up until 3am getting the car ready, had never drifted before, had one practice lap and spent most of the day with the car in the wrong gear (so he said!) :wack:
Also, he told me he'd only just finished setting the car up for more rear grip!! Fair play to him for having a crack.
Oh, and the Option NSX by the entrance was absolutely gorgeous. And I've been inspired to do the roof black on my S13 now

highlights so far. James' competition run, with the 3 360 spins. the sierra going a donut near a crashed car, and then getting chased by the marshall. the toyota thing exploding. the pile of pieces the marshall collected from the track from said toyota. the 14a taking out the polystyrene hoarding, coutless gravel excursions, phil drifting the escape road  the lotus carlton smokin, our chairman :notworthy the bloke from norway with the 11,000 rev limit, the scooby :wack: and every one else actually.
i am planning on doing a vid for each car (so if you were there, you should get coverage) then there will be the compilations.

CMU, everytime you came round after the practice drifts, the whole crowd were respecting what you were doing with that car - incredible
The Lotus that got a wild card should have been the Carlton and not that upside down boat - fooking amazing that was
But at the end of the day, the three best drifts got into final 3 with the possible exception of phils first run, and for sheer crowd entertainment, the R34 had to win. Anyone found out what he was running??

The only time I managed to take Priory properly and you got it on film
Legend.
I had a real nightmare on saturday. Bad tyre choices saw me spending the whole pratice session franticly swapping tyres round and adjusting pressures. Once it was sorted I only managed to do one practice run before the elimination rounds.
As you can probably guess that is not the way to prepare for the competition, so I didnt even make the final 5 this time, as I have done at all previous rounds. But my drifting wernt good enough so I can live with it.
On the upside I managed to pull off the first handbrake initiated drift i have ever done (Into the s-curve to the left of the BRDC stand) and managed to do my first ever burnout in front of the crowd. They loved it :D:D:D
August cant come soon enough for me! I need to get into the final 5 again!
astraboy.
Oh, and this made me laugh:
Docwra: So Steve, all the food we are having for Billing, where are we going to keep it??
Steve Carter: Well, weve got a fridge, but the only problem with that is .........
BTCC driver on PA: And the winner ......... Steve Carter!
Steve Carter: Ooooh bollocks thats me! :wack:
Also tickled me that my car got judged for best engineered, and the overjoyed reaction of Richie, the eventual winner :wack:
Grim, you got PM
the R34 had to win. Anyone found out what he was running??
Julian's R34 is pretty much stock. :)
Cheers for the compliments everybody, I'm really pleased to have done so well.
I think the person I have to give kudos the most is Rob in his MR2, he came not expecting a lot, having fixed the car the day before, and goes away having got top 5 with a 165hp MR2....a car not known for it's handling predictability... :wack:

I was hoping youd say that :D
Me and Danny were arguing all day about what sort of 5 you had - he reckoned it was a 520, I thought at least a 535. Mate, someone should put you in a 300hp 200 and see what you can do - the way you were coming round the first corner was absolutely incredible and had me giggling like a girl :)
Car looks like a drifty battleship lol
:D Jesus christ, my head won't fit in the car for next round.
525i anyway, 150hp, 159lbs/ft if it were perfect, but I doubt I'm getting all the ponies any more anyway. :(
I think if I was able to see myself from the outside I'd probably not take the first corner so aggressively, I mean the front suspension & steering was juddering and complaining as it got dragged about and the front inside wheel lifted off the ground... lol :wack:
It looked like the front outside wheel was going to burst through the top of the wing :wack:
Was funny, yet cool :D
Ben, you could see the front inside wheel wobbling out of brooklands mate:eek:
A true Hero...:notworthy:
I has an agenda for Saturday
1) Dont put it int he dirt
2) Dont come last
3) Pull off at least ONE half decent drift.....
I pulled off two of em (I think you can guess which one I didnt)
In all honesty, NW is a totally different ballgame to D1. Its slower and a lot more technical. I found the best bend for me was coming out of Woodcote which we werent supposed to drift and I got bollocked for it :wack: :D
I just didnt have the balls to go in at the break neck speeds the circuit demands and I did start to push a bit harder b4 lunch in the last practice laps, but just as my balls were starting to grow they called lunch and then they shrivelled up again :D
Rob did really really well.
But, AS they say practice makes perfect and I intend to be there next time with a few additions to the car in an attempt to take some of the sloppiness out of the equation. Im all up for it making it easier to predict. It seemed that as I tried to shift weight (as is the case out on the circuit) the suspension was absorbing all the transfer :wack:
Again, full credit to Graham (Midgers). I really dodnt know how he gets those angles on stock suspension.....
LOL Well when I was getting it REALLY sideways and pretty much on the lockstops all I could hear was "BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR" from the outside wheel scraping into the wing, some of the laquer has been "vibrated" off on the wing from it being shook about.
It is one way to roll your arches.....smash the wheel into them....

Shit yeah - I forgot Midgers :notworthy
You could have at least spun it for the crowd matt :wack:

I haven't time to read the whole thread yet but just a quick not to say Hello to everyone new i met on Saturday  and the usual suspects too :D
Ben - Awesome skills mate :notworthy
Rob - I didn't know tll afterwards that yours is the non turbo MR2 - open diff and all :notworthy
Congratulations to Mr Carter on winning the Clubman comp
It was good to see a different Pro top 3 too... I can't believe how many people are getting REALLY good now
on a different note - was everyone struggling to drift more than last time? I know I found it really hard work for some reason and no matter how much I kicked the arse off my car it wouldn't go all the way round luffield like it normally does. I also had a couple of complete Brain farts at certain points in the practice runs - I even tried to pull on the handbrake at max revs in 3rd at one point :wack: :annoyed:
I managed to get it together - a little bit for the comp but everyone else was really really good. Respect to everyone :notworthy :D

Thanks for all the compliments :) I'm going to have the same problem as Astonman and not be able to get in my car soon.
What a top day!!!
Respect to all though, it takes guts to go into priory fast enough to drift the whole thing, I know I didn't get it right, but just about everyone else did :notworthy
Can't wait for the next one.
Can't say I had understeer at all. No problems making it slide. I did have major problems keeping it sliding. I had an absurd level of grip, and the car just kept wanting to straighten up all the time. I struggled to do anything more than a series of short slides around Luffield, rather than managing one large graceful slide.
Around Copse in the practice runs, I managed to hit the suspension bump stops. I've never managed that in my car before - it's quite stiff and doesn't ride particularly low so has plenty of travel. Must have been a rediculous level of grip to do that around there.

On my 4th practice run I came down the straight to where the marshall was and he was already waving me through. I nailed my foot to the floor, reaching 4th before the bend. Looked down and had 110 on the clock. Then I turned into Copse. I drifted all the way round it. It was amazing, but the only person that saw it was the marshall up near maggotts, though he did give me a thumbs up.
Seems like everyone had a good time, wished I could have made it!
anyone got some good pictures of the red S15??
