Well, the engine looks like a goner, it's very likely it's warped and it's about £300 for a new engine with about 20k on it. And I would like to keep the MR2 because the bodywork is so good, therefor, it's coming back to life.
GarySCA has been a good lad and offered to do it, however I am wondering how hard it is to fit an engine?.... just that I would like to try, but is it something that you really don't want to do unless you are an ace of cars?
(also seem to be looking at a set of webers) :)

Depends how much mechanical experience you have really. If, for example, changing a starter motor would be something you'd leave to a garage, I suggest you let Gary do it :D

Get it out is easy, but getting it back in can be a different story :( should be to hard with an engine crane as it a straight swap long as you can remember where everything goes ( or you have a good manual) and i sure soem of the lads on here would help/gice advice if you got yourself in a mess
Well my mechanical experience has been so far
fitting an alternator
retiming the engine
oil change (not such an easy task on mine)
fitting a starter on my old 86
I usually try and do most things myself, and the car isn't essential really as I have a white van supplied by work :) so I can leave it on my Dad's driveway and do it, plus I have some very knowledgeable mates who can help.
It would be a straight swap no messing with superchargers for the moment :(

I dont know about an MR2 but on most cars an engine swap isn't actually that dificlult. Also most bits hang off the engine and when it goes in its pretty obvious what goes where:)
It will probably not start first time as there's bound to be bits you forget, but you jusat fins them and connect :)
The main thing making it difficult on an MR2 is the location of the engine and the tight confines of space - there isn't a large engine bay into which you can just "drop" an engine into with the option of removing the bonnet for a bit of extra room for manoeuvre. :(
But with a bit of care and attention... :thumbs:

I did the engine and gearbox swap on my old 7 series myself... and apart from the fact that the thing was ENORMOUS!!! (3.5l straight 6!!) it was surprisingly simple.... 3 people with almost 0 mechanical knowlege... as martin said, most things have a fairly logical position, and in my case the 600000000 connectors for the loom were all colour coordinated, or attatched to bits of wire that were the correct length to just fit...
problem for you - on an MR2 doesnt the engine come out the bottom???
give it a go, and if you do spoon it up... then take some cakes round to Garys, and leave him the mess to clear up!!! :D:D

Ideally I would like Gary to fit it, I know he'd do a spankingly good job of it, but the more money I save, the more money I have to spend on carbs, exhaust and of course, brakes :).
By looking at it, the engine doesn't look any more crampt than most engine bays. You do have to drop it out of the bottom and lower the car onto the new engine, but there seems to be a lot of information on telling you how to do it properly. The car isn't essential to me, as I have a white van to bean about in, so might try it :).

is it the same for the Mk2 Mr2??? ( engine out the bottom that is)
