View Full Version : Bye bye MR2
Well it's been fun, and I loved it, but something nasty happened :(
Thick white smoke coming from my exhaust was a hint something could be wrong :) .... Number 4 cylinder with half my coolant in was another. Headgasket has gone, and I have been getting quotes of about £400 to get it fixed, £400 I do not have to repair it :(
The MR2 was getting a bit impractical anyway, I need something that will fit my guitar and stuff in, so was looking for something fairly sleeper like, so far an XR4x4 is looking the most promising.

:( gutted for you mate
good luck on the hunt for your next motor
Sorry to hear that mate - £400 is about right for the head gasket to be done I'm afraid. Any idea what caused it?
It's done 140k on that engine so it might be old age, but I rekon it's been thacked by the previous owners, had no way of knowing that when I got it though :(
Such a shame considering the bodywork is mint pretty much, but I can't afford to have no car :(
What are you going to do with it then?
I've got someone who might be interested in buying it, as the bodywork is quite good and everything else is fine, just the brakes are a bit bad (new cylinder for about £60) and the engine.
of course, if anyone else wants to help me out here and has a mad interest in it, they are more than welcome to PM me :).

just do the head gasket urself or with a mate. It ain't that hard ,gasket will cost ya about 30 quid and the are know other special tools apart from a torque wrench to sort it out.

IIRC the head gasket set costs around £110. At least it did about 4 years ago.
Plus I have been informed by other MR2 owners that it's really a job that is best done by a proper garage because the head may need skimming etc...
also it sounds like an engine out job, something I have NO intention of doing :(

not when i did it 3 times in the last year ;) (3 different engines).
Full headset 51 +VAT.
Let me know if you do attempt it mate and i help you as much as i can.
Usually it is caused by a ruptured coolant pipe somewhere else in the car causing the thing to overheat and when this happens usually the head warps, gasket goes and head therefore needs skimming. I would hazard a guess that the pipes running radiator at the front of the car have possibly split, especially if the Toyota recommended coolant hasn't been used. It's not an engine out job though. But still expensive nonetheless.
Edited - if you can round up a few more people like AE86 it's worth doing yourself though.
The AW11 engine isn't in the AE86 though, is it?
Cheers guys.... but still fairly certain this is a no goer :(
The AE86 shares the same engine as the AW11, just the AW11 has it in the wrong/right place :)

Well good luck whatever you do.

oh mate, I know how that feels  Gutted for you
Get a Starion now, quite fannying around with inferior cars.
;)
Mine went as well and it was one of the reasons i got rid of mine. Its really upsetting as i enjoyed the car alot. I hope you get yourself sorted though.

It's sad to see another AW11 going down. I wish I could have kept mine to go alongside the S13, but it wasn't to be...
Go somewhere cheaper for it to be done! My old AX's head gasket went a couple of times and it never cost more than £200 IIRC.
I can recommend a cheap place not a million miles from Chesterfield (is taht where you are, or am I thikning of someone else) - about 10 miles from Bakewell :)

To be honest, I doubt anyone will be cheaper, it's a bugger to do it on an AW11 due to a lot of reasons apparently.
I'm based in Norwich :)
I have been reliably informed that it's likely it's a new engine needed, it had done 140k+ so I can't really grumble, a new engine with about 20k on it costs £390 or so, need to get quotes on how much an engine fit is, but my job makes it hard to get the time :(
Right, just bought a new engine for £100.... it's got a full toyota service history, and for £100 who cares :)
so that will be fitted, and much happiness to be had ... for the moment :p
