Having recently replaced the tools i had stolen from my last garage I need some ideas on how to secure my garage properly.

http://www.bradfordplumbing.co.uk/housefront.jpg
and no... the fence is not still there :p

I've already got 3 security lights pointing at the driveway and the neighbour has a security camera facing it (pointed at his driveway but it's covers mine too). Is there some sort of locking device thing i could get/make for it. At the moment the car just gets parked so close that the door can't be opened but it's a pain in the ar5e cuz i have to reverse the car everytime i want in.

Any ideas?

A super cheap locking device that I was told to do .... and have done, is on the inside of the garrage, with the door shut drill, 4 holes though the lip of the garrage door and in to the concrete floor, Next slot 4 bolts into the holes.

If the intruder blows the lock off, the door still wont open :), unless you get in the garrage and remove the bolts the door wont budge, its not 100% secure but it will stop a hell of a lot, they will make ALOT of noise getting in through the main door !

my sister has a bollard that drops into the ground and can be locked into the up position...she uses it to hold protect her Astra Coupe (don't know why she bothers...)...you could put one of these in front of the door to stop it opening.

You can get hasp and staples for garage doors. Add a high security padlock and it'll be a tough nut to crack

get into herpetology, heat the thing up a bit, put a pond in one corner and buy a couple of crocs?

We are doing the same with our garage at the moment:

Bollard that drops on drive as mentioned above
Security Lighting with motion sensor
CCTV - installed monitoring drive - signs can also be placed up
Gravel Drive - Helps you hear movement
Alarm - just for the garage - again motion detectors - door etc
Security Lock
Fencing and extra gates

and the best secuirty - our dog - alerts you to any movement outside.

This is the best way to secure an up-and-over type door. If you need to open the door from outside there are locks you can buy that will do the same thing. The only downside with this is that is will be visable from outside.

My other method of security is to fill the garage with so much sh!t that any intruder will probably break both legs before getting to my tools!!!

The locks on a standard up'n'over door are built to a (low) price.

Can't find any useful links quickly, but the standard bars/bolts are likely replaceable with something strong and home made.
The weakest point is the handle and the lock cylinder.

I'll have a word with our friendly locksmith and see what he advises.
