I'm talking a proper "romantic" ride away into the sunset, big open roads, vast untamed wilderness adventure.

And I'm considering biking across either Russia or Africa to get it.

has anyone here ever done something like this?

yes...

perhaps I should have said "motor biking" to make it clear. I doubt a motor bike would like the jungle...

There was a site posted a while back about some woman who goes biking through Chernobyl. You could try that :D

because i feel that it has been done. hell, there was even a film about it, if only i could remember the name.......

it isn't the road that i'm interested in per-se. it's the sheer adventure....

Voodoo - yes I would be very very interested to do that.

i've been thinking of doing something like this - something different and truely un-run of the mill. Pretty settled on going sailing on a tall ship (think full on pirate vessle!) for a week or two :) should be pretty cool

the other main contender is dog sledging out to see the northern lights, but the best time to go is late Jan so its a bit of a wait. And it would be realy gutting to go all that way and not see it!

hrm, yer, i guess this post has nothing to do with bikes, but you can sled/sail in to the sunset if you realy wanted :)

You could do the hippy trail to India - there's a book about it that accompanied a BBC series - I'll try to remember what it was called and post back later

Yay for my photographic memory - the book is called "On the Road Again" by Simon Dring. And while you're at it check out "Ghost Rider" by Neil Peart (the drummer in Rush) - it's about a bike trip he took from Canada to Mexico to clear his head after he lost his daughter in a car crash and, shortly afterwards, his wife to cancer. Both books are excellent reads.

If you want more of an 'instant fix' try racing the sun up to Orkney...

I can understand the urge (I've been fighting it for about a year now) but I'm going to settle for some surfing this year.

my mate flew to australia, bought a bike on the south coast (NC30 the silly fool)

rode it the whole length of the east coast, then decided he wanted to bring the bike back, shipped it across the water, and road it overland from australia to uk.

he's only got a few pics - him on himalayas, that sort of thing

he spent couple of months diong it - met a lass in Oz who came with him - she was sensible enough to ride an enduro bike...

I had my adventure by going to Iraq for 3 months over christmas. I think he had the better idea...

...

Jeeesus was he a midget or a sado-masochist?

Across the globe on a VFR400.... madness

Anyway, Stazza, if you want a proper adventure then don't plan anything - just go where you fancy.

Get yourself something big, heavy and bombproof, plenty of dosh and some maps.....

Don't go to Russia or Africa unless you've got a deathwish....

Canada is breathtaking, but has the dullest inhabitants on the planet.
Europe is always a good bet.

Personally I would only go to a country that meets the following criteria

1) Has a British Embassy
2) No Civil Wars in the last 5 years
3) No Revolutions in the last 10 years
4) The 'police' aren't referred to as paramilitary, or ride around in the back of ancient Toyota pick-ups brandishing AK-47s
5) The indeginous female population must NOT have moustaches

1) I am thinking something like an MZ - lets face it, if it can withstand Russian winters it can withstand anything...

2) Russia is the lead favourite right now

3) Damn Aithc - he got there first and has ruined my evening
