Can you get stuff for hamsters to do

Hamster need plenty of stimulation ie loads of toys etc
Or it could be his cage isnt big enough as they also need plenty of excersise these small cages are nowhere near adequate.

What ever you do DO NOT get a mrs hamster unless you want 100s more!!

Don't get one of these as it stresses them out as they think that they are trapped...

Ors never got bored as they had a rotastak and when they weren't shagging or chasing the babies around they were having massive arguments and shouting up and down the ladders.

Our single one didn't seem too bored either. I think Rotastax keep them amused, although they do like the wheels as well.

if it is looking a bit sleepy, put some porn on and get the sellotape out. You'll never see it move so fast :D

Getting a cat or dog normally keeps them occupied :wack:

Yeah do what Ken says .. Those clear plastic ball things, they roll around thim for ages, all over the floor, your daughter will love that as well as she can play with Hammy at the same time.

The down side is if you have hard floors the noise will ruin the footy .... and there little hampster sh1ts get out on to the floor.

But endless fun.

Alternatively, get your old lego out and build a few mazes for him to explore.

I thought the bar gnawing was them sharpening their teeth so they can be cute then bite you really hard.

This fcuker sharpens his teeth on my fingers so has no excuse about biting the bars

LOL, see hammy has out-whitted you, he sharpens them on the bars so that he can bite you to the bone.

aww the poor blighter's stressed :(

In that top pic, s/he is trying to get more air (as opposed to pushing the ball forward) and in the bottom is just looking generally paniced.

Whether that is because it is a plastic ball or because it is bright pink is as yet undetermined....

Seriously tho, those balls are stress factories for the poor blighters :( A maze is a good idea, hiding food in different parts of the cage (esp if you have a rotastak) keeps hammy on his/her toes and stops a boring routine developing.

.
Nothing to do with a nutter chasing it around the lounge with a camera with and almighty flash then

i dunno, atleast with the balls they get to roam around a bit, but god knows if they can acctually see far enough to see outta the ball.... once my mates ham was in a ball and it took a trip down the stairs, we couldnt catch it in time, it was fine though, seemed to like it as it always headed that way when upstairs hehe...... i dunno, if it wants excitment let it have a chase with a cat or dog.... DIY bungee jump with big rubber bands?! - jokes man-

Hamsters have poor eye-sight so it doesn't matter about the colour of the ball. and they don't get stressed in them, they enjoy the exercise, that's why they run in those wheels for days at a time.

In a ddition to the maze idea, making a series of tunnels out of toilet roll and kitchen roll tubes gives them a bit of mental stimulation. It'll give your daughter something to do as well, instead of destroying your car.

Nah, going to the vets is like going to a doctor, he will just put Hammy on Anti depressants, and that will just numb him, and he wont be the hamster you know and love.

Better still take him to a hamster psychiatrist who can talk through his problems.

Alternatively, just blow a little spliff smoke though his bars and chill the fecker out. :D

animal stimulation is a huge field. i know that zoos have got their act together (certainly for the higher mamals). food is a good one. don't just put food in the bowel, hide it. then the little bugger has to furrage (which is what they should do) i have seen bears in zoos that get their fish inside a block of ice!

mazes as mentioned are good, but anything to give them a bit of stimulation is a help. our g-pigs have a run that comes out on the living room floor, and i try to think of ever more devious methods of hiding the food, changin the shape of the run, new toys. put them in it, and the squeak with excitement for ages

Hiding food  and also the biggest most entertaining cage you can get.

We have a Hamster Ball and i don't think they are stressful at all - if a hamster was to be stressed in that then locking him up in a cage with metale or plastic bars and a plastic house etc should have killed him/her from stress long before they get to play in their ball.

We do have a hamster lead tho  like an ickle harness and u can take em for walks :wack: :ghey:

You can get a big plastic maze that attaches on to exisiting tubes :Plug: and hide food within that.

I find the cereal sticks that you can hang in their cages keep them entertained. Also wooden chews etc

Cool!!

Got any pic's, sounds funkeh!

My old hampster used to escape from his ball. Used to wedge it against the skirting in the right place and scratch at the hatch.

Both my hamsters and my rats used to love sticks and things arranged at funny angles in the cage for them to climb all over (particularly if you hide some cheese or something in tricky to reach places).. Used to keep em amused for hours and hours.. You need a nice high cage for them (and a load of sawdust at the bottom for them to fall on when accidents happen)..

They chew the bars to wear theyre teeth down, because they never stop growing. If it didnt chew the bars its teeth will eventually curl back and grow into its head.

^^What he said^^
It's the same with guinea pigs, they need to wear down theis teeth, give it one of those stick things that hangs from the cage, it's chew that for hours.
